Abstract: A process and apparatus are described wherein an integrated saw mill includes conveyor means for feeding debarked logs, classifying the logs and storing them according to size, advancing a particular log, scanning and analyzing the log and determining its cut pattern, squaring off the log by chipping heads, collectively cutting the log in line in accordance with the predetermined cut pattern, simultaneously advancing on separate conveyor means each piece of lumber so produced, sorting and storing each piece of lumber in accordance with its size, and further discharging the lumber onto a sticker-stacker for transferring stacks to drying kilns.
Abstract: Apparatus for use with a food slicer comprising a conveyor for location adjacent to the said slicer and adapted to receive slices of food as they are cut by the slicer; a pump for generating hydraulic pressure, a motor driven by said hydraulic pressure; passageways between said pump and said motor; means for drivingly connecting said motor to said conveyor; a flow limiting valve in the passageway between the pump and the motor for limiting the speed at which the said motor drives said conveyor; and means for periodically increasing the fluid flow to the motor temporarily to accelerate said motor.
Abstract: The invention provides an arrangement for detecting faults in wrapped filter rod, for tobacco-smoke filtration, prior to its being cut into lengths, the arrangement comprises a light source and a light-sensitive receiver, for example a photo-transistor, in a housing provided with a rod guide which imposes on the rod a path between and spaced away from the said light source and receiver, a beam of light from the said source being projected through the said path of the rod to the receiver. Advantageously the housing bounds a cavity from which extraneous light is excluded and the light source and receiver are disposed behind respective transparent windows spaced away from the said rod path. The said receiver may be operatively connected to a system by which a faulty rod length detected is caused to be rejected after having been cut off from the rod.

Abstract: Each customer order has the form of an image band segment comprised of one or more image sections bearing respective images. The customer order image band segments together form an elongated image band. The image band is provided with order marks of different types, each image section of one customer order being provided with an order mark of one type, and each image section of the next customer order being provided with an order mark of another type, so that the order mark type changes from one customer order to the next on the image band. The changes of order mark type are detected using a detecting arrangement which is operative for generating control signals in dependence upon such detection. The operation of an order-sorting arrangement is controlled by applying the control signals thereto.

Abstract: A control system is disclosed for a hot forging machine which is supplied with lengths of stock. The system provides automatic rejection of workpieces cut from the rearward end of one length of stock and the forward end of a subsequent length of stock. The system includes a sensor which laterally deflects the rearward end of a length of stock as such rearward end approaches a control point to produce a signal to reset the system. As the forward end of the subsequent length of stock passes the control point, a second signal is generated to actuate the stock movement measuring system. Stock movement is measured by a measuring roller which engages and is turned by the stock as it moves toward the cutter. The rotation of the measuring roller drives a pulse generator which supplies a signal to a counter.

Abstract: A labeling machine, system, and method capable of accommodating offset printed label tapes or other label tapes having discontinuities between the individual labels of a repeat print pattern, with feeding and severing such in controlled fashion utilizing a printed indicia code and a two stage feeding and cutting cycle, while uniquely securing and advancing articles or containers to be labeled with novel equipment, both in a manner to allow extremely accurate and dependable label application and subsequent label verification on the article as well as label position checking, and with discharge means positively governing discharge of the labeled articles according to acceptability or non-acceptability.
