Patent number: 11248863Abstract: A firearm using blowback action has a barrel which is movably mounted within a shroud which is fixedly mounted on the firearm's frame. A gas space is formed between the barrel and the shroud by a difference between the inner diameter of the shroud and the outer diameter of the barrel. At least one gas port provides fluid communication between the bore of the barrel and the gas space. During firing of a cartridge, pressurized gas in the gas space applies a force to the barrel which moves relatively to the shroud away from the muzzle end of the firearm to engage a slide or bolt, helping to move it out of battery and extract the spent cartridge casing. Gas is vented to the atmosphere through a gas vent defined between the barrel and the shroud in fluid communication with the gas space.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 2021Date of Patent: February 15, 2022Assignee: Smith & Wesson Inc.Inventor: Gary Zukowski

Patent number: 6490959Abstract: In order to provide a gun in which the recoil force attendant with actuation is reduced, a prototype model of a telescoping barrel gun has been designed. In this design, an inner barrel, which contains and directs the projectile, is made to slide forward within an outer barrel when the gun is actuated. The motion of the inner barrel is then stopped while the projectile moves unimpeded. The telescoping barrel design functions together with a design which requires a portion of the cartridge's propellant energy be used to produce a reduction in the force of the gun's recoil when fired. Upon firing, some of the propellant gases are channeled forward in the gun to an air space, which lies between the two concentric barrels. The forward motion of the inner barrel forces the gases in this air space from the gun through small holes located in the distal area of the outer barrel. The discharge of these gases is rearwardly directed in order to counteract the gun's recoil.Type: GrantFiled: September 11, 2001Date of Patent: December 10, 2002Inventor: Walter M Lavin

Patent number: 4028994Abstract: A handgun of the drop barrel type has an over-length firing pin coupled with a "pile-driving" barrel action that permits the firing of rifle load cartridges. A micro-precision timing sequence of the action causes the rearwardly propelled cartridge disposed in the floating drop barrel chamber to strike the fixed firing pin while the barrel is still in its rearwardly moving direction. In the preferred form of the invention a spring driven actuator sleeve surrounding the barrel interiorly of a receiver tube propels the barrel rearwardly such that the cartridge is ignited and the bullet discharges from the barrel prior to the seating of the barrel against a breech plate that is integral with the gun frame. Gases escaping and expanding from the cartridge are captured by the barrel and actuator sleeve and cooperate with the inertia created by the falling barrel to lock and seal the barrel chamber against the breech plate.Type: GrantFiled: October 29, 1975Date of Patent: June 14, 1977Inventor: Benjamin A.
