The core is shaped and configured as a structural truss of the apparatus, in which the core includes a plurality of parallel, adjacent rows and the core distributes and dissipates force impacting on the apparatus. The grinding layer is positioned on at least one side of the core facing towards potential threats, in which the grinding layer grinds rounds, projectiles, fragments or other materials impacting the apparatus, helping to dissipate the impacting material and its momentum. For the front window a viewing window of ballistic glass can be installed, the rear or sides could be solid armor. The louvers have overlaps to provide for gap protection. When no threat is present, the louvers are in the full open position. Once a threat is detected, then the louvers are closed. The movement of the louvers can be accomplished by a push/pull cable, hydraulic pressure, air pressure or other means. The system in the fully open position allows for a complete unobstructed viewing area. In the semi-deployed or partial down position, the system provides partial ballistic coverage for the occupant, and still allows for some occupant vision capability. The armor panels are fastened to and extend upwardly from the base at an angle in the range of 10-30° with respect to the vertical to define a protected space behind the panels. Struts are welded to the base plate and extend upwardly toward and through an opening in a middle armor panel and between the edges of the middle armor panel and side armor panels. Welding plates are constructed and arranged for welding to the struts on the rear faces of the armor plates. The welding plates extend over the rear faces of the armor plates at junctions between the armor plates. A weapon platform is disposed on a second portion of at least one of the struts for mounting a weapon in the protected space to fire out past the front face of the armor panels.
