  • Patent number: 4369576
Abstract: A portable hand-held hydraulically-operated cable cutter for severing electric and communication cables has a pair of cutter jaws, one fixed and one movable. The movable jaw is driven positively in both the closing and opening directions by a piston-cylinder assembly under the control of the lineman. The piston is fixed; the cylinder is movable. The movable cutter jaw is connected pivotally to the movable cylinder. The lineman holds the tool in one hand, using a fixed grip handle, and with the other hand controls operation of the movable cutter jaw by rotating a cylindrical control handle in one direction or the other. As a safety lock, the tool has an offset trigger which must be pressed to unlock the control handle before it can be rotated. • Patent number: 4326449
Abstract: A double-acting hydraulic jack has a cylinder, a piston dividing the cylinder into first and second chambers of variable volume on opposite sides of the piston, and a piston rod with first and second passages opening into the first and second chambers respectively. The piston is moved by supply of pressurized fluid to one passage or the other. An end-of-stroke device is provided to relieve the high pressure applied to the first chamber when the piston comes to the end of its stroke under the action of the pressure fluid supplied to that chamber through the first passage. The device comprises a bore in the piston. The axis of the bore is parallel to the piston axis. The bore contains a small moveable rod urged to project from the bore into the second chamber by high fluid pressure taken from the first passage to move a sliding sleeve in the bore. This sleeve movement is transmitted to urge the small rod and also blocks a third passage leading to the bore from the first passage.

  • Patent number: 4272999
Abstract: A piston-and-cylinder type actuator, for use particularly in steplessly-variable-ratio transmission units of the toroidal race rolling friction type. In such units the actuator may serve to thrust the input and output members and their intermediate rollers into engagement, so that drive will be transmitted. According to the invention enhanced thrust is obtained by interposing auxiliary pistons (6, 7) in the space between the main piston (1) and the end (4) of the cylinder (2). One of pistons 6, 7 is linked to the main piston 1 and the other to cylinder 2, and they divide the said space into two pressurized zones (16, 18) with a vented zone between them. Where the actuator has to rotate about the cylinder axis, unwanted centrifugal forces generated within zones 16, 18 may be diminished by forming the vented zone so that a quantity of fluid may accumulate in it.

  • Patent number: 4080870
Abstract: Total apparatus includes extensible and retractable means for moving a load linearly between two or more spaced positions, the load having a fluid pressure operated motor, and means for delivering fluid from a pressure source to the motor at selected stages of extension. A cylinder having a head end and a shaft bearing end houses a piston rod and piston which are reciprocated by fluid pressure through a pair of actuation ports. A passage extends through the length of the piston rod and through the piston to a marginal wall. Fluid pressure power ports extending through the cylinder wall are spaced longitudinally at selected stations and the piston may be moved to any station, where its passage registers with the corresponding power port. Fluid from the pressure source may then be delivered through the piston and rod and by conduit means from the outer end of the rod to the motor on the load. There are no swivel joints or hoses in the fluid path to leak or deteriorate in use.

  • Patent number: 3973468
Abstract: An extendible and contractible shaft comprises a number of shaft members on a common longitudinal axis, each except the outermost member being telescoped within the one next adjacent. Each telescoped member has a piston slidably sealed to the inner wall of the next adjacent outer member to form a series of tandem arranged sealed pistons. Fluid passageways are provided between adjacent shaft members so that fluid supplied under pressure to an inlet port of the device flows through the passageways to all the piston heads, thereby extending the telescoped shaft members and at the same time driving fluid out from under each piston through fluid passageways to an exit port of the device. When the pressurized fluid flow is reversed to send pressurized fluid to the undersides of the pistons, thereby driving fluid above the piston heads out through the first mentioned port, there would normally be incurred substantial shock as each piston head strikes its stop in the retraction operation.

  • Patent number: 3949846
Abstract: There is disclosed a hydraulic pressure system disc brake which comprises a caliper having a groove large enough to pass the circumferential portion of brake disc therethrough, and a hollow cylinder extending in a direction at a right angle to the aforesaid groove. A flanged cylindrical member is disposed within the hollow cylinder. A cup-shaped piston is fitted in an annular space defined by the aforesaid caliper and cylindrical member.
