  • Patent number: 4097199
Abstract: A hand-operated hydraulic pump utilized to lift or trim an outboard marine engine. A wobble-action handle connects with a pinion gear which in turn drives a rack on a double-ended piston forming two cylinder chambers on opposite ends thereof. Reciprocal movement of the piston alternately pumps fluid from each cylinder chamber both of which are supplied by a common longitudinal passage in the piston across a pair of check valves located at each end of the piston. The pump housing includes the reservoir, discharge port and needle valve for relieving fluid from the discharge port back to the reservoir.

  • Patent number: 4090589
Abstract: A valve actuator employs a torsion spring type clutch to engage and disengage a drive motor and an output shaft. The torsion spring normally engages and is connected to a gear which may be engaged by a dog to cause disengagement of the clutch. The output shaft carries a pinion which is engaged with a rack carried on a piston which is slidable in a closed fluid containing cylinder. The piston includes an axial passageway with a metering orifice therein which smoothes the operation of the actuator and provides positive stops for the output shaft with a minimization of impact between the piston and the ends of the cylinder.

  • Patent number: 4088063
Abstract: An integral power steering gear with a valve in the piston is provided having a short piston and cylinder to conserve space and weight. The input shaft is mounted on a bearing carried by an inwardly projecting annular portion on the bearing cap. The projecting portion mates with a recess in the end of the piston when the piston is moved to the full extreme in that direction. The valve guide pin has been relocated at the input shaft end of the valve where maximum support of the valve is realized and improved reversibility of the valve under all conditions is gained. In the bearing cap, both a high pressure seal and a low pressure weather seal are provided. An insert ring between the two seals serves as backup to the high pressure seal. In an alternative embodiment, the insert ring may be tapered toward the inside of the gear to allow use of a thin wiper-type seal.

  • Patent number: 4056043
Abstract: A pneumatic actuator includes a cup-shape cylinder body housing a piston and having a generally flat base with a mounting hub projecting outwardly. A piston rod is slidably mounted in the hub and connects to a load such as a damper in an air mixing box. The base is formed with a bearing recess or depression means encircling the hub. An annular swivel ring includes an inner diameter adapted to loosely fit over the hub and includes an outer periphery which is generally spherically shaped and defines a central spherical sector having a maximum planar diameter slightly larger than that of the sector defined by recess. The swivel ring is a two-part member having interconnecting slot and projection elements providing a snap joint connection, with the mounting plate firmly clamped therebetween. The swivel ring with the attachment plate fits over the mounting hub.

  • Patent number: 4046623
Abstract: A suction head or a pick-up roll in a paper machine is mounted on a pivotable lever and is movable therewith between an operative position, an intermediate position at a short distance from the operative position, and a retracted position at a substantial distance from the operative position by two hydraulic cylinder and piston units whose cylinders are articulately connected to the frame and whose piston rods are articulately connected to the lever. The piston rods are rigid with first pistons, and each unit further comprises an annular second piston which surrounds the respective piston rod. Admission of pressurized fluid into a first chamber of each cylinder results in movement of the second pistons from first to second positions to thereby move the lever from operative to intermediate position through the medium of the first pistons and piston rods.

  • Patent number: 4028998
Abstract: A double acting power boost cylinder comprising a movable servo piston for vehicle steering purposes is provided with means comprising a fixed piston protruding into a bore of the servo piston so as to reduce the effective end surface pressure receiving areas of the servo piston. Thus, the total forces acting to drive the servo piston are reduced to avoid overload or damage to a steering mechanism driven by the servo power piston. The invention has its utility in vehicles where a common hydraulic source is used for various purposes such as steering, brakes, vehicle level and the like where pressures required may vary and where the pressure required for steering is not as great as required for other purposes. Usually accumulators are used and the invention is of particular utility since it permits the use of small pumping devices.

  • Patent number: 4023468
Abstract: A pneumatic pump adapted primarily as a left ventricular heart assist device includes a flexible bladder with a rigid housing. A pneumatic driver applies rhythmical pulses between the bladder and the housing to repetitively collapse the bladder and establish a pumping action through the bladder, in conjunction with check valves in the inlet and outlet to the bladder. Between the driver and the pump there is provided a pneumatic pulse limiter which includes a flexible diaphragm isolating the driver from the pump. Pulses from the driver are transmitted to the pump only through the flexible diaphragm and the diaphragm is constrained to move only within established limits. Regardless of the magnitude of the pulse from the driver, the maximum pulse applied to the pump cannot exceed that corresponding to the maximum displacement of the diaphragm.Between successive pulses, the portion of the system between the driver and the flexible diaphragm is depressurized.

The illustrated load comprises hydraulically operated equipment in a hydraulic system powered by a pump driven by the engine. Throttle control mechanism comprises a pair of cylinders supplied from fluid pressure in the hydraulic system. Pistons in the respective cylinders are connected by pivots with a control arm linked to the throttle control. When equipment is hydraulically operated from the hydraulic system, the fluid back pressure against the pump increases, this back pressure being greater the greater the hydraulic load. The increased load on the engine from the pump would slow the engine down if its throttle opening were to remain at its original setting.
