  • Publication number: 20090007775
Abstract: An improved engine for aeronautical applications includes a forged cylinder block having a drive device rotatably mounted therewithin and a motive device for rotating the drive device, the motive device including two cylinder banks in a V-type configuration and a plurality of cylinders mounted within the cylinder banks for producing power and rotating the drive device. The forged cylinder block further includes a plurality of cylinder cavities formed in the cylinder banks and the upper approximately one-third of each of the cylinder cavities is generally surrounded by a generally toroidal cooling chamber, and the lower approximately two-thirds of each of the cylinder cavities is generally free of any surrounding cooling chambers. Finally, a coolant circulation device in fluid transmission connection with each of the cooling chambers is operative to circulate cooling fluid therethrough whereby the upper approximately one-third of each of the cylinder cavities is cooled by the cooling fluid.

  • Patent number: 4112826
Abstract: Variable displacement reciprocating piston engine arrangements are disclosed wherein pistons drive a variable displacement oscillating rocker member connected with an oscillating lever that in turn drives a rotating shaft through a crank mechanism. The rocker member and oscillating lever are engaged at a sliding joint displaced from their spaced axes, forming an angular multiplier drive. The rocker member and its axis are movable to vary the piston stroke by changing the lever arm of the oscillating shaft connection with the rocker member, while at the same time the piston compression ratio is held constant or varied in a predetermined manner through adjustment of the piston positions by the same movement of the rocker member. Various drive and balancing arrangements are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4094227
Abstract: An opposed piston fluid motor having a pair of angularly related cylinders rigidly joined at adjacent ends in a common plane is mounted above a base with the common plane normal to the base and the cylinders inclined downwardly from the common plane toward the base in the manner of an inverted V. A crankshaft is rotatably supported above the base with its axis parallel to the base and lying in the common plane below the cylinders. A piston is reciprocably mounted in each cylinder, and an expansible working chamber is provided within the cylinders between the pistons. Working fluid is supplied to the working chamber through a fluid port located at the apex of the cylinders under the control of a rotary motor control valve driven by the crankshaft. The crankshaft has a pair of cranks which are displaced 180.degree. apart. Each piston is connected to a different one of the cranks by a piston rod and a connecting rod.

  • Patent number: 3932989
Abstract: An illustrative system is disclosed for use as a rotary-drive engine, utilizing combustible fuel and a hydraulic system of energy conversion. An engine block defines a pair of expansion cylinders (combustion chambers) and an associated concentric pair of hydraulic chambers. The chambers matingly receive unitary piston structures for phase-opposed reciprocal movement. The hydraulic working chambers communicate with each other and can exhaust high pressure fluid through a control valve structure for drive power. Exhausted fluid is replaced in volume by low-pressure spent fluid. The body of the fluid contained in the hydraulic working chambers along with the piston means and springs connected to the engine block define an oscillatory system which is resonant at the operating frequency. That consideration, along with the absence of lateral loads on the pistons, results in relatively high efficiency.
