  • Patent number: 6484497
Abstract: A neutral brake system for use in a hydrostatic transmission to automatically apply a brake when the hydrostatic transmission is shifted to neutral. The neutral brake system includes a hydraulically-released, spring-activated brake mechanism in direct fluid communication with the main hydraulic passages which form a hydraulic circuit between the pump and the motor. When the hydrostatic transmission is shifted to neutral, a brake spring biases a brake lever into contact with a pair of friction pads to engage a brake disk splined to the output shaft of the motor to stop the vehicle. When the hydrostatic transmission is shifted out of neutral, a charge of hydraulic pressure within the hydraulic circuit causes a piston within a brake release chamber to override the biasing force of the brake spring, and to urge the brake lever out of contact with the friction pads such that the friction pads are disengaged from the brake disk, and the output shaft of the output shaft of the motor may freely rotate.

  • Patent number: 5467685
Abstract: A linear actuator, adapted especially for picking up and transporting workpieces, comprises a pneumatic, rodless cylinder having a pair of driven elements mounted on opposite sides of its body. The first driven element is directly connected to the piston of the cylinder via a sealed, longitudinal slot formed in the cylinder body and the second driven element is drivably connected to the piston or first driven element by a flexible drive band that passes around rollers mounted at opposite ends of the cylinder body. The driven elements therefore move linearly in opposite directions to one other upon actuation of the rodless cylinder. The second driven element may be fixedly secured to a stationary structure so that, upon actuation of the cylinder, the cylinder body itself and the first element will simultaneously execute linear motion in the same direction whereby the first element, which may have a work piece--gripping device mounted on it, will in effect execute double its normal stroke length.

A nut is provided in an end wall of the cylinder and the piston rod of the piston passes through the nut. The initial portion of the forward stroke of the piston is accomplished by the introduction of fluid pressure into the cylinder and, as the piston approaches the final portion of its stroke, the threaded portion of the piston rod engages the nut whereupon the nut is rotated to threadably advance the piston through the final portion of its stroke. The rotation of the nut is accomplished by pressurized fluid acting against a piston rack which rotates a gear which in turn rotates the nut. The center line of the piston rod is offset from the center line of the piston to preclude rotation of the piston and of the piston rod.

Abstract: An air brake includes a service brake chamber which actuates a push rod. A collet brake chamber is partially defined by a collet brake diaphragm. A locking collet is mounted to the collet brake diaphragm and includes a bore through which the push rod passes. A collet brake spring biasas the collet into a tapered collet hole to clamp the collet onto the push rod to prevent the movement of the push rod toward the brake off position. Application of pressure to the collet brake chamber overcomes the force of the collet brake spring and moves the collet away from the tapered collet hole to allow the push rod to move freely. The collet can be moved towards and locked against the collet brake spring to prevent the collet from engaging the push rod.
