Patent number: 6525289Abstract: The piston for a magneto-rheological fluid system is manufactured from a piston skirt of a material having a high magnetic permeability and a piston plate which closes one end of the piston skirt having a low magnetic permeability and therefore must be made out of a material such as stainless steel. Patent number: 6279455Abstract: Past pistons have been susceptible to reduced longevity due to increased forces of combustion thereon during operating cycles of an engine. The present two piece unitary piston increases the longevity of pistons used with increased forces of combustion. For example, a head member has a bottom surface and a support surface. The bottom head portion also includes corresponding first and second upper extending walls connected to the first and second inner depending walls to form the lower portion of each cooling gallery. The inner depending and upper extending walls are formed so that the ratio of the sum of the transverse thickness of the adjacent walls to the outer diameter of the piston head is approximately from 2% to 8%, and preferably 4% to 6%.Type: GrantFiled: October 2, 1998Date of Patent: August 10, 1999Assignee: Cummins Engine Company, Inc.Inventors: Norbert Abraham, Sr., Carmo Ribeiro

Patent number: 5425306Abstract: An annular composite insert is cast which includes distinct particles such as cast iron dispersed throughout the base metallic alloy. The insert is then placed in a piston mold, and a piston cast such that the insert maintains a radially outer face generally flush with a radially outer surface of a piston head of the piston. The base metal of the poured piston is preferably the same as that of the insert so that the insert bonds to the piston head and shares the same thermal expansion characteristics. The insert is machined to form grooves adapted to receive a piston ring. The particles of the insert are exposed to provide superior wear resistance, support to the piston ring so that microwelding is reduced, and also to act as a dry lubricant in a preferred embodiment.Type: GrantFiled: November 23, 1993Date of Patent: June 20, 1995Assignee: Dana CorporationInventor: John D. Patent number: 4664021Abstract: The detonation-resistant material is applied to a piston to reduce the likelihood of damage to the piston caused by pinking or knocking. The detonation-resistant material, which may be nickel or a nickel based material, is applied to the upper part of the ring band and around an annular portion of the crown adjacent the edge of the crown. The ring band is, before treatment, machined to form a recess extending therearound which is filled with the detonation-resistant material by a plating process. Thus, on the ring band, the detonation-resistant material does not extend radially outwardly of the remainder of the ring band. This reduces the possibility of the detonation-resistant material scraping or scuffing on the associated cylinder or liner during movement of the piston in the associated cylinder or liner and also reduces the likelihood of the detonation-resistant material being scraped off.Type: GrantFiled: August 12, 1985Date of Patent: May 12, 1987Assignee: AE PLCInventor: Brian L.
