  • Patent number: 4551976
Abstract: A disposable rupturable shipping and installation strap holding in a retracted position the output member of a linear actuator such as a pre-filled pre-bled hydraulic actuator. The strap has a retaining member fitted over the end of the actuator output member and a pair of symmetrically disposed strips or bands integrally formed with the retaining member and attached at their other end to a portion of the actuator housing. • Patent number: 4534269
Abstract: The apparatus comprise a generally tubular outer element, a generally cylindrical inner element disposed therewithin and sized relative thereto to provide a generally annular operating space therebetween. An intermediate element is disposed in said operating space and is dimensioned relative thereto to create interference fits with said outer and inner elements and prevent relative movement therebetween. Means are provided to introduce pressurized fluid to the respective element interfaces to expand the outer element wherein the elastic limit thereof to an extent sufficient to release the interference fits and enable relative outer-inner element movement. Re-locking of the outer and inner elements occur automatically upon depressurization of the fluid and attendant return of the outer element to its unexpanded configuration. Actuating means to effect relative outer and inner element movement upon apparatus unlocking are also provided, and include means to pressurize the fluid.

  • Patent number: 4503948
Abstract: A disc brake is actuated through a mechanical linkage comprising a power screw (54) which is rotatably mounted within the housing (22) and a piston or power nut (38) which is threadedly engaged with the power screw (54) and which also is engaged with the friction element (32). An annular thrust collar (70) is installed within the housing (22) and defines a thrust receiving surface (73) which faces a surface (62) on the power screw (54). Brake reaction forces are transmitted to the wall of the housing (22) without loading the bolts (86) in tension by way of the surfaces (62, 73) of the thrust collar (70), the surface (108) and the retaining ring (66). A take-up ring (84) made of a deformable material is carried in the groove (82) of the thrust collar (70) so that, when a brake is manufactured, the thrust collar (70) is first installed in the bore and the retaining ring (66) is then installed in the groove (64).

  • Patent number: 4442756
Abstract: A temperature sensitive locking mechanism is provided for a fluid pressure actuator which will hold the shaft of the actuator in a spring compressing position until the occurrence of a pre-selected temperature in the vicinity of the actuator. Locking threads are provided on the exterior of the actuator, and a latching collet, having a plurality of peripherally spaced, internally threaded, latching arms cooperates with such threads and prevent movement of the actuator shaft by abutting a surface of a stop block which is in abutment with the actuator shaft. The radial faces of the threads are sufficiently angled so as to exert an outwardly directed camming force on the collet latching arms to permit the release of the latch under the axial forces produced by the spring bias on the actuator shaft. The collet latching arms are forcably retained in locked position by an encircling spring wire, the ends of which are connected by a fusible link.

  • Patent number: 4392556
Abstract: A fluid pressure actuator which locks in the extended position. The lock is a roller operated, dual segment pawl mechanism that unlocks in response to a pressure difference between extend and retract pressures. The two lock segments, chamfered for engagement with the cylinder end, are in diametrically opposed slots in the actuator piston head. A cylindrical section projects from the segment portion. An end view of the lock is mushroom shaped. Two rollers, held in alignment normal to the actuator centerline by a cage integral with an unlock rod, operate in conjunction with the lock cam surfaces in such a manner as to carry the radial loading imposed when in the lock mode. The rolling action of the rollers, combined with the radial application of locking force provides low friction operation of the lock.

  • Patent number: 4372333
Abstract: A fluid pressure actuator is moved in one direction by fluid pressure and returned in the other direction by a compressed spring. With the method and apparatus embodied in the disclosure, a plurality of additional energy storage storing devices are compressed by only the initial movement of the actuator in response to the application of fluid pressure thereto. Such energy is applied to the energy storage devices by an annular cam surface provided on the actuator shaft. During the return movement of the actuator, the stored energy is returned in the form of an additional axial force applied to the actuator shaft just prior to its return to its original position. When such actuator is applied to a valve, the additional force imparted to the shaft by the energy storing devices may be designed to cause the severing of a wire line trapped in the opening of the valve at the instant that closing of the valve is required.
