Patent number: 5997618Abstract: A filter is provided which includes an organic vapor adsorbing layer, a first particulate removal layer, and a second particulate removal layer. The organic vapor adsorbing layer includes porous adsorbent beads which allow air or gas to flow therethrough with little resistance and provide increased surface area by virtue of the pores. The particulate removal layer can be made from an electrostatic and/or polytetraflouroethylene. The filter can have a figure of merit greater than about 10 and a capacity for permanently adsorbing organic vapors, wherein the figure of merit is calculated based upon a fractional efficiency determined for particles having a size of 0.3 .mu.m in an air flow having a velocity of 10.5 ft./min and for Frazier permeability at 0.5 inches H.sub.2 O.Type: GrantFiled: September 25, 1997Date of Patent: December 7, 1999Assignee: Donaldson Company, Inc.Inventors: Kirk A. Patent number: 5914457Abstract: An antidiffusion layer is provided between a first fuel adsorption layer communicated with a fuel tank and a second fuel adsorption layer communicated with air. Since adsorbing ability of the antidiffusion layer is lower than that of the first and second fuel adsorption layers, pore diffusion of the fuel vapor from the first fuel adsorption layer to the second fuel adsorption layer is reduced. Since the antidiffusion layer forms a plurality of nonlinear passages, air diffusion of the fuel vapor is reduced. Therefore, the diffusion of the fuel vapor is suppressed with a thin, small and simple antidiffusion layer, and the canister can be simplified and the reduction of the number of parts and the cost thereof can be realized.Type: GrantFiled: July 8, 1996Date of Patent: June 22, 1999Assignee: Nippondenso Co., Ltd.Inventors: Hideaki Itakura, Naoya Kato, Tohru Yoshinaga, Tokio Kohama, Kazuto Maeda

Patent number: 5914456Abstract: An adsorbent material containing package is provided for use within the sealed canister of a liquid accumulator for an air conditioning system of the kind in which the suction tube within the canister has spaced upwardly extending legs connected by a bottom bite and in which the bleed opening in the bite is formed as a downwardly extending nipple. The adsorbent material package is formed with substantially identical first and second pouches formed of tubular porous polyester felt material with sealed upper and lower ends containing a quantity of adsorbent material. The pouches making up the package are joined to each other at upper flanges with the junction being located along an extension of a median line through the pouches and leaving the ends of the flanges free of attachment. The transverse width of the pouch flanges exceeds the spacing of the suction tube legs so that the flange end portions are splayed to receive one of the legs therebetween thereby locating the package in relation to the suction tube.Type: GrantFiled: October 22, 1997Date of Patent: June 22, 1999Assignee: Stanhope Products CompanyInventors: Douglas E. Patent number: 5912424Abstract: Systems and methods for electrical swing natural gas adsorption are described. An apparatus includes a pressure vessel; an electrically conductive gas adsorptive material located within the pressure vessel; and an electric power supply electrically connected to said adsorptive material. The adsorptive material can be a carbon fiber composite molecular sieve (CFCMS). The systems and methods provide advantages in that both a high energy density and a high ratio of delivered to stored gas are provided.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 1997Date of Patent: June 15, 1999Assignee: Lockheed Martin Energy Research CorporationInventors: Roddie R. Patent number: 5876487Abstract: An adsorbent filter including compression molded particulate adsorbent construction is provided. The compression molded particulate adsorbent construction contains a particulate adsorbent and a sufficient amount of binder to retain the particulate adsorbent in a non-free flowing form. The adsorbent filter preferably includes a compression molded particulate adsorbent construction as described, positioned within an outer, porous cover. Preferably the outer, porous cover includes expanded porous polytetrafluoroethylene. In certain preferred applications, the adsorbent filter is positioned within a housing defining an internal volume and including therein electronic component(s), such that the adsorbent filter protects the internal volume of the housing, and components therein, from damage. The typical application is as a disk drive adsorbent filter. A preferred method for preparing an adsorbent filter according to the present invention is provided.Type: GrantFiled: March 17, 1997Date of Patent: March 2, 1999Assignee: Donaldson Company, Inc.Inventors: Andrew Christian Dahlgren, Robert Murray Rogers

Patent number: 5871569Abstract: An open-pore polyurethane foam support body (20) is impregnated in a single step with a solution of a thermoplastic adhesive dissolved in a solvent that is also a foam expander, or in two sequential steps first with a foam expanding solution and then, after the foam has expanded, with a solution of a thermoplastic adhesive, to form an adhesive layer (40) on the surfaces (25) within the pores (22) and passages (24) of the foam body (20). Sorbent particles (30) of activated carbon are introduced into the expanded pores until the expanded foam is packed to the desired density of carbon particle loading. The impregnated and loaded foam is then air dried at room temperature to evaporate the foam expanding solution until the foam body contracts to substantially its original volume.Type: GrantFiled: October 15, 1996Date of Patent: February 16, 1999Assignee: Carrier CorporationInventors: William F.
