  • Patent number: 6053968
Abstract: A portable room air filter includes a rigid housing having an essentially-hollow reflective interior chamber. The interior chamber is bounded at one end by an air exhaust port, and by a removable HEPA filter element in fluid communication with an air intake port at an opposite, second end. The air purifier includes a germicidal ultraviolet light source mounted within the interior chamber, and a fan assembly draws air through the purifier. Baffling constructions prevent escape of ambient ultraviolet light, while ensuring free airflow through the purifier. Separate power switches control the fan assembly and ultraviolet light source. The purifier includes an interlock switch that disables the fan and ultraviolet light source when the purifier is opened. A status indicator provides visual feedback regarding the state of the ultraviolet light source. The purifier is lightweight and includes a grasping handle to facilitate movement of the purifier as needed.

  • Patent number: 5997619
Abstract: A self contained air purification system includes an upright enclosed housing defining a germicidal chamber. A primary filter having a normally upstanding longitudinal axis has outer and inner peripheral surfaces, an interior plenum, and is supported on a base member. The housing has air inlets proximate the filter and air exhaust louvers in an upper member. Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation lamps are disposed in the germicidal chamber, and a resiliently mounted fan overlies the primary filter for drawing unclean air from the environment into and through the air inlets, through the primary filter, through the plenum and then into the germicidal chamber in a vortex-shaped whirling mass air stream flowing in a protracted course around and past the irradiation lamps for maximized exposure to the lamps, a purified air stream being discharged, after a final filtration, through the air exhaust louvers, then is returned to the environment.

  • Patent number: 5938823
Abstract: Air cleansing apparatus includes an electrostatic precipitator in which the collector plates are made of, for instance, reticulated chemical vapor deposited silicon carbide, or reticulated silicon carbide ceramic coated with titanium nitride, zirconium diboride, or chemical vapor deposited silicon carbide. Microorganisms entrained on the collector plates are thermally degraded or vaporized by microwave radiation directed against the plates during a sterilization period which follows a collection period.

  • Patent number: 5935525
Abstract: An air abatement system that includes a pre-treatment system and an air treatment system for abatement of contaminated air that includes pollutants such as V.O.C.s, NOx, and/or CO. The air stream is treated using activated air, activated water, and ultraviolet light under conditions that produce hyroxyls, peroxides, and other oxidants without the formation of ozone. These oxidants are also utilized in the activated air, with the activated water being formed as an aqueous solution of the activated air. The pre-treatment system includes a quenching zone where activated water is misted into the air stream, followed by alternating reaction zones and depletion zones where activated air is added and then turbulently mixed with the air stream. The air treatment system includes a primary treatment tunnel, carbon bed system, activated air generator, and a sparger tank farm. Activated air produced by the generator as added into water while being exposed to ultraviolet light in the sparger tank farm.

  • Patent number: 5919422
Abstract: A photo-catalyzer for deodorizing, cleaning, sterilizing, and water purifying operations includes a substrate, a titanium dioxide film disposed on the substrate and functioning as a photo-catalyst, and a light-emitting diode disposed adjacent to the titanium dioxide film and producing ultraviolet light having a wavelength from 360 to 400 nm onto the titanium dioxide film. The photo-catalyzer can be used in places where there is no sunlight because it is optionally provided with a light-emitting diode. The light-emitting diode does not require a large installation space because it is an extremely small light-emitting device. Hence, the photo-catalyzer has a compact structure and can be used easily anywhere, including small places. The substrate can be fabricated into a variety of useful appliances to take advantage of the strong oxidizing properties of the photo-catalyzer.

  • Patent number: 5908494
Abstract: A liquid spray air purification apparatus utilizing at least two liquid migration eliminator members for providing effective containment of substantially all of the spray liquid employed in the system to within a segregated spray liquid loop so as to prevent spray liquid from interfering with the operation of electrical and other auxiliary components within the apparatus and to minimize spray liquid loss from the recirculation cycle. The segregated spray liquid loop is formed by a liquid spray chamber, a spray liquid sump and recirculation means interconnecting the sump and the liquid spray chamber. Auxiliary components include a particulate filter, fan means, germicidal ultraviolet light means, dehumidification means, heating means and a compressor. The apparatus is designed for use in efficiently improving interior environmental air quality within homes, offices, hospitals and the like, and is adaptable for use in motorized vehicles.

  • Patent number: 5891399
Abstract: A device used in an air purifying system. The device includes an ultraviolet radiation source, a pre-filter, and a post-filter. The pre-filter is arranged adjacent to the ultraviolet light source such that the pre-filter is irradiated by the ultraviolet light source to destroy bacteria, virus, or other organisms on the pre-filter. The device also includes a cover that is movable between an open and closed position. In the closed position, the device operates in a passive mode to irradiate air within the device and to filter air through filters in the device. In the open position, the device operates in an active mode to irradiate an area external of the device and to simultaneously filter air through a filter in the device.

  • Patent number: 5837040
Abstract: Room air is pulled from an inlet into a pre-filter duct and moved therethrough and through a main filter duct to an outlet in the room or some other location. The flow path is through a pre-filter unit, blower, germicidal light unit, and HEPA or ULPA filter unit to the outlet. Each of the units is readily replaceable and is furnished with a bio bag. The ducts have access openings in the duct wall at the unit locations. The access openings have flanged collars, with removable covers thereon. For installation of a unit, the bio bag is opened and secured to the flange, followed by removal of the flange cover. Then the unit is installed in the duct, the cover re-installed on the flange, and the bag rolled up in place, still attached to the flange, and remains so during operation of the apparatus and during removal of the unit at the end of its useful life, and then is used to encapsulate the used unit for disposal of the unit, to protect the service personnel from exposure to contaminants.
