Patent number: 11649053Abstract: Described is an apparatus and method of an aerial vehicle, such as an unmanned aerial vehicle (“UAV”) that can operate in either a vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) orientation or a horizontal flight orientation. The aerial vehicle includes a plurality of propulsion mechanisms that enable the aerial vehicle to move in any of the six degrees of freedom (surge, sway, heave, pitch, yaw, and roll) when in the VTOL orientation. The aerial vehicle also includes a ring wing that surrounds the propulsion mechanisms and provides lift to the aerial vehicle when the aerial vehicle is operating in the horizontal flight orientation.Type: GrantFiled: July 26, 2021Date of Patent: May 16, 2023Assignee: Amazon Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Gur Kimchi, Louis Leroi LeGrand, III, Dominic Timothy Shiosaki, Ricky Dean Welsh

Patent number: 11485489Abstract: A vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft has a first drivable configuration in which the pilot seat is positioned between the wings and facing the direction of forward travel. The VTOL may be driven in the first configuration as a normal automobile. In the first configuration the wings are aligned with the direction of forward travel and their surfaces are vertically oriented. In the first configuration, the VTOL may also attain altitude and be maneuvered using thrust from propulsion sources. In a second configuration, the pilot seat is rotated 90 degrees from the direction of forward travel to a direction of forward flight. Forward flight is achieved using thrust to rotate the wings from the vertical orientation to a lift-providing orientation. In concert with the rotation of the wings, the pi lot seat is counter-rotated to maintain the seat facing the direction of forward flight.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 2020Date of Patent: November 1, 2022Assignee: Alef Aeronautics Inc.Inventors: Konstantin Kisly, Oleg Petrov, Pavel Markin, Yevgeniy Dukhovny

Patent number: 11453491Abstract: One embodiment is a rotor system comprising a duct ring; a hub disposed centrally to the duct ring; first and second stators each connected between the duct ring and the hub; first and second control vanes rotatably connected to the first and second stators, respectively; a structural hoop having a first end connected to the first control vane and a second end connected to the second control vane, the structural hoop for translating rotation of the first control vane about a vane axis to the second control vane; and a mechanism for restricting at least one of forward-aft movement and side-to-side movement of the structural hoop relative to the duct ring.Type: GrantFiled: February 11, 2021Date of Patent: September 27, 2022Assignee: Textron Innovations inc.Inventors: Elizabeth Feeley, Karl H. Schroeder, George Matthew Thompson, Michael Mark Attaway, Joseph Richard Carpenter, Jr.

Patent number: 8382040Abstract: A wing assembly has a wing and one or more no-bias laminar flow oval diskettes that are fixed on a support structure along the C/L (center of lift) of an airfoil, of an aircraft wing. The benefit of an oval diskette with laminar flow is that it has no speed limitations and it allows an aircraft to clime at a speed that matches its Ground Effect Lift speed which is a 25% performance increase and a 40% reduction in vortex drag with a increase stability that eliminates inertia coupling of high-speed airfoils.Type: GrantFiled: February 16, 2011Date of Patent: February 26, 2013Inventor: Terry Wayne Hamilton

Patent number: 5730391Abstract: A body configuration for improving the fluid-dynamic performance efficiency of aircraft and watercraft comprises a generally conical upper segment (54) and a generally conical lower segment (56) that are joined at a common base plane (53), achieved by inverting the conical lower segment (56). The slopes of the conical surfaces are determined by the prescribed planform of the craft or vehicle and by the height of the conical segments wherein the height of the conical upper segment (h.sub.u) is less than and typically two-thirds that of the conical lower segment (h.sub.L). Although not limited to elliptical planforms, a generally circular planform (52) is preferred for a vertical takeoff and landing aircraft operating in the subsonic flight regime and an elliptical planform (68), with a large aspect ratio for takeoff and low-speed flight, then rotating to a low-aspect-ratio orientation for supersonic flight operation, is preferred for supersonic transport and single-stage-to-orbit type aircraft.Type: GrantFiled: June 5, 1995Date of Patent: March 24, 1998Inventors: John A. Miller, Jr., William A. Losey, deceased, by Marion E. Losey, executor

Patent number: 5520565Abstract: A flying toy disc with a pivoted fuselage, the disc flying spinning in flight upon being thrust with a forward spinning motion, the disc having a particular transverse configuration which taken with the pivoted fuselage tends to stabilize the flight of the disc by having air streams co-act upon the lower and upper surface of the disc to stabilize the flight.Type: GrantFiled: March 9, 1995Date of Patent: May 28, 1996Inventor: Clark Ulysse

Patent number: 4436264Abstract: A kite or flying device comprising a substantially ring-shaped body member formed of foam plastic, the normally upper surface of said body member being flat, the normally lower surface of said body member being part of the surface of a sphere, the ring-shaped body member being bounded by a radially outer circumference and by a radially inner circumference, diametrically opposite portions of said outer circumference respectively defining the leading edge and the trailing edge of the kite body, an open area bounded by and lying radially inwardly of said radially inner circumference, a bar-like member carried by the kite body and lying on a diameter of said kite body, said diameter extending from the leading edge to the trailing edge, the bar-like member being in bridging relation to the open area, the bar-like member being provided with apertures permitting attachment of a kite string or towline to the bar-like member, and rudders carried by the kite body contiguous the trailing edge of the kite body.Type: GrantFiled: August 9, 1982Date of Patent: March 13, 1984Inventor: Elmer B.
