Abstract: A method of calibrating a servo reader and a read/write head for a data storage tape machine that reads and writes data to a data storage tape. The data storage tape has a servo pattern that is recorded on the tape in a known location. The servo pattern is used to provide precise position information for the data storage tape. According to the method, data is recorded on the data storage tape and the location of the data storage track is read. The location of the data storage tape is compared to the known location of the servo pattern to establish a reader offset value. The data storage tape machine is updated based upon the reader offset value to adjust the position of the read/write head.

Abstract: A locking media pusher is coupled to a servo controlled stage and includes a protruding probe and a locking mechanism. The stage moves forward and backward along a base toward and away from a storage medium. If an eccentricity of a track on the storage medium exceeds a threshold, the storage medium is rotated to an orientation where the greatest eccentricity is directed toward the media pusher. The media pusher is moved toward the storage medium until a probe extending from the media pusher contacts the storage medium. The probe is locked within the media pusher. The stage and attached media pusher are retracted from the storage medium and the storage medium is unlocked. The magnitude of retraction of the stage is recorded. The stage is moved toward the storage medium a distance corresponding to the probe contact position plus the eccentricity magnitude to correct the eccentricity.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method of testing a magnetic recording medium including a magnetically isolated magnetic recording pattern (41a) on a non-magnetic substrate. The method includes: a first signal writing step of writing a first signal (6) with a width less than a track width at a plurality of measurement positions (5) on the magnetic recording pattern (41a) using a writing head; a first signal reading step of reading the first signal (6) using the reading head to obtain a plurality of first read signals corresponding to the measurement positions (5); and an analysis step of analyzing magnetic characteristics of the magnetic recording pattern (41a) using the plurality of first read signals obtained in the first signal reading step. The test method is suitable for testing the magnetic characteristic distribution of a discrete track medium and is capable of testing the magnetic characteristic distribution of a magnetic recording medium with high accuracy.

Abstract: Changes in the thermal boundary condition near a close point of an ABS to a media indicate proximity of the ABS with the media. Before contact, heat conduction from the ABS is primarily through convective and/or ballistic heat transfer to air between the ABS and the media. After contact, heat flux primarily flows from the ABS to the media through solid-solid conductive contact. Further, a light source within a HAMR transducer head may create additional thermal variations within the transducer head. These thermal variations create temperature variations within the transducer head. Two resistance temperature sensors on the transducer head at varying distances from the close point and/or light source measure these temperature variations. A temperature difference between the two resistance temperature sensors indicates proximity of the close point to the media and/or light output.

Abstract: An optical disk reproducing device for controlling false detection of synchronization signals due to intersymbol interference, and stably improving accuracy of frequency acquisition of a phase locked loop (PLL) even when offset and so on occur. A signal width close to an original mark length is obtained to use for frequency acquisition of the PLL by, for example, using two different slice thresholds and taking a width between a rising of a result of slicing at one threshold and a falling of a result of slicing at the other threshold as a synchronization signal width. When asymmetric properties due to offset, asymmetry, etc. occur, an amount of corrections on the slice threshold is calculated, and it is reflected on a threshold previously set to always obtain a correct synchronization signal width.

Abstract: There is disclosed herein a method and apparatus for centring a disk on a spindle, a spinstand and a method of testing with a spinstand. The method of centring includes attaching the disk to the spindle with a stick-slip clamp. A vector is determined by which the centre of the disk is displaced from the spindle axis and the vector is aligned with a movably mounted piezo actuator. A voltage is then applied to the piezo actuator to cause the piezo actuator to apply an impulse to the edge of the disk to cause the disk to slip in the clamp and reduce the displacement of the disk.

Abstract: A method and computer program product for sending a data request from a host bus adapter logic processor to a hard disk drive, setting a standard time out period for receiving a reply from the hard disk drive, sensing vibration in the hard disk drive, sending a vibration alert signal from the hard disk drive to the host bus adapter logic processor in response to the sensed vibration exceeding a predetermined amount of vibration, and, in response to receiving the vibration alert signal from the hard disk drive, the host bus adapter logic processor establishing an extended time out period for receiving the reply. The rotational vibration sensor used by the hard disk drive for repositioning the read/write head may also be used to sense the vibration and form the basis for the vibration alert signal, such as a vibration error code. By extending the time out period during high vibration events, the hard disk drive can ride out the event without being tagged as having failed.

Abstract: Various approaches that reduce the width variability of storage media data tracks are described. First and second data tracks are written so that the second track overlaps the first track. After writing the second track data to the second track, an effective width of the first track is determined. The effective width of the first track is the portion of the first track that is not overlapped by the second track. One or more additional write operations to the recording medium are performed to compensate for the effective width of the first track being less than a threshold. The additional write operations may include one or more of rewriting the first track data to a third track on the storage medium and writing additional redundancy information to supplement the coding of the first track data.
