Abstract: The invention provides a data storage system and a method of cooling storage media within a data storage system. The data storage system comprises an enclosure; plural drawer structures each containing plural storage media such as disk drives, wherein the storage media are arranged such that air can pass vertically within the system through and between at least 2 of the plural drawers thereby to cool the disk drives in the system by a vertical flow of air within the system; and air flow generating means to generate a vertical flow of air through the drawers.

Abstract: A magnetic head according to one embodiment includes outer modules each having a tape bearing surface and an array of transducers selected from a group consisting of readers and writers; and an inner module positioned between the outer modules, the inner module having a tape bearing surface and an array of transducers selected from a group consisting of readers and writers, wherein portions of edges of the tape bearing surface of the inner module are non-skiving in regions not aligned with the array of transducers in a direction of media travel thereacross, wherein an outer edge of the tape bearing surface of each of the outer modules are adapted for skiving air from the magnetic medium when the magnetic medium travels in a direction from the respective outer module towards the inner module.

Abstract: A hard disk drive includes a base provided with a plurality of interior component parts related to reading and writing information; a cover placed on a top surface of the base with the interior component parts therebetween and assembled to the base by a plurality of screws; a gasket interposed between the cover and the base to provide a seal between the cover and the base; and a reinforcing coupling part provided in the cover and the base to reinforce pressurization of the cover to the gasket when the cover is assembled to the base.
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention improve the safety against a fall of a disk drive device. In one embodiment, when an HDD has recognized detection result data of a fall sensor to indicate a fall, the HDD unloads a head slider from above a disk to a stand-by position. The HDD checks whether or not the detection result data of the fall sensor indicates a fall on the occasion of a seek start. If the data indicates a fall, the controller unloads an actuator. The HDD issues a seek fake error on the occasion of a seek completion. On the occasion of a re-seek start in the error recovery process, the HDD conducts a fall check referring to the detection result data.
Abstract: A magnetic disk apparatus has a heater for heating a head incorporated in the magnetic disk apparatus, an atmospheric pressure detector for detecting a change in atmospheric pressure in the magnetic disk apparatus, and an adjuster for adjusting a thermal dose supplied to the head by the heater according to the change in atmospheric pressure detected by the atmospheric pressure detector.
