Abstract: In one embodiment, a perpendicular magnetic recording head includes a main magnetic pole; a leading shield below a leading side of the main magnetic pole; a leading gap between the leading shield and the main magnetic pole; a trailing shield above a trailing side of the main magnetic pole; a trailing gap between the trailing shield and the main magnetic pole; and a nonmagnetic leading bump between the main magnetic pole and the leading shield. Additional embodiments are also disclosed.
Abstract: A magnetic write head having a shield structure that provides both a leading shield and side shielding function. The magnetic shield is separated from the sides and leading edge of the write pole by a non-magnetic gap layer that has a non-uniform thickness. The non-magnetic gap layer is thicker near the leading edge and thinner at the trailing edge. This allows for increased side field gradient near the trailing edge of the write pole and decreased write field loss at the leading edge of the write pole.

Abstract: A magnetic recording device includes a write head, a perpendicular magnetic recording medium, a recording-current generating circuit, and a setting circuit. The perpendicular magnetic recording medium includes a plurality of tracks that includes a recording track. The recording-current generating circuit generates a recording electric current. The write head supplied with the recording current writes a recording data pattern on the recording track. The setting circuit sets a value of the recording electric current such that the value of the recording electric current decreases as a magnitude of side erase effect on at least one track of the tracks adjacent to the recording track increases.
