Abstract: An aircraft propulsion system with a drag reduction portion adapted to reduce skin friction on at least a portion of the external surface of an aircraft. The drag reduction portion may include an inlet to ingest airflow. The aircraft may also have an internally cooled electric motor adapted for use in an aerial vehicle. The motor may have its stator towards the center and have an external rotor. The rotor structure may be air cooled and may be a complex structure with an internal lattice adapted for airflow. The stator structure may be liquid cooled and may be a complex structure with an internal lattice adapted for liquid to flow through. A fluid pump may pump a liquid coolant through non-rotating portions of the motor stator and then through heat exchangers cooled in part by air which has flowed through the rotating portions of the motor rotor. The drag reduction portion and the cooled electric motor portion may share the same inlet.

  • Publication number: 20060194180
Abstract: A mechanical interface for providing high bandwidth and low noise mechanical input and output for computer systems. A gimbal mechanism includes multiple members that are pivotably coupled to each other to provide two revolute degrees of freedom to a user manipulatable about a pivot point located remotely from the members at about an intersection of the axes of rotation of the members. A linear axis member, coupled to the user object, is coupled to at least one of the members, extends through the remote pivot point and is movable in the two rotary degrees of freedom and a third linear degree of freedom. Transducers associated with the provided degrees of freedom include sensors and actuators and provide an electromechanical interface between the object and a computer. Capstan band drive mechanisms transmit forces between the transducers and the object and include a capstan and flat bands, where the flat bands transmit motion and force between the capstan and interface members.

  • Publication number: 20110127775
Abstract: A tethered airborne electrical power generation system which may utilize a strutted frame structure with airfoils built into the frame to keep wind turbine driven generators which are within the structure airborne. The primary rotors utilize the prevailing wind to generate rotational velocity. Electrical power generated is returned to ground using a tether that is also adapted to fasten the flying system to the ground. The flying system is adapted to be able to use electrical energy to provide power to the primary turbines which are used as motors to raise the system from the ground, or mounting support, into the air. The system may then be raised into a prevailing wind and use airfoils in the system to provide lift while the system is tethered to the ground. The motors may then resume operation as turbines for electrical power generation. The system may be somewhat planar in that many turbines may have their rotors substantially in one or more planes or planar regions.

  • Publication number: 20100230546
Abstract: A control system and method for control of a cyclical flying system which uses lift segments, which may be airfoils, which rotate around a central hub, similar to the mechanics of an autogyro. The airfoils may achieve speeds significantly above the wind speed feeding the system. The airfoils may be linked to the central hub by flexible radial tethers which stiffen considerably as the speed of the airfoil increases. The central hub may be linked to the ground with an extendible main tether. Power generation turbines may reside on the airfoils and utilize the high apparent wind speed for power generation. The generated power may travel down the radial tethers and across a rotating power conduit to the main tether and to the ground. The airborne assembly may have the rotational speed of the airfoils, its altitude, and its attitude controlled by using control surfaces linked to the airfoils, or by control of the angle of attack of the airfoils relative to a central hub, or relative to each other.

  • Publication number: 20040072225
Abstract: The present invention provides a retrieval unit for a microarray processing device to transport a workpiece such as a microscope slide before or after processing operations by the microarray processing device. The retrieval unit may include a storage unit and a lifter unit. The storage unit has a storage frame, a storage rack and a first motor. The storage rack is adapted to store microscope slides. The storage rack is mounted to the storage frame and capable of sliding in a first plane by the first motor. The lifter unit has a loader frame, a loader arm and a second motor. The loader arm is mounted to the loader frame and capable of sliding in a second plane by the second motor. The loader arm is capable of accessing a selected microscope slide from the storage rack. The loader arm uses a vacuum chuck to retain the microscope slide on the loader arm. The loader arm may also have a motor to enable it to extend the vacuum chuck below the bottom surface of a microscope slide.
