A method of discharging a battery for safe disposal includes connecting a first discharge load in parallel to a first cell. A first voltage across the first cell is monitored. A second discharge load is connected in parallel to a second cell. A second voltage is monitored across the second cell. A processor compares the first voltage and the second voltage to a predetermined cell voltage threshold.
