  • Patent number: 4704568
Abstract: A transport and stacker system in which the articles being transported are propelled in their path of travel by the moving magnetic field of a linear induction motor. The magnetic field also functions to attract the moving articles toward the linear motor and in order to overcome this attracting force and air bearing is provided. The air pressure acting against the attracting force is just sufficient to move the articles a slight distance away from the linear induction motor so that the articles move in the path of travel while suspended in air out of contact with the physical surface of the motor. When the desired position is reached, the article is dropped on a stack by deenergizing the magnetic field.

  • Patent number: 4703189
Abstract: Apparatus and method for controlling a variable speed wind turbine-generator at improved efficiencies is disclosed. The method and apparatus of the invention control the rotor tip speed below the limiting torque of the wind turbine at a selected constant velocity ratio with respect to wind speed and, above the limiting torque, control the rotor tip speed at speeds greater than those dictated by the constant velocity ratio up to a speed or power limit. This may be accomplished by controlling tip speed above the point where limiting torque is attainable to maintain optimal wind turbine performance along the performance envelope.

  • Patent number: 4703191
Abstract: A reserve power source, switchably connected to a network between a primary power supply and a load, provides an auxiliary power signal to the load when a power failure condition is detected in the signal from the primary power supply. The reserve power source includes a circuit for instantaneously detecting and switching upon the occurrence of a power outage. An overvoltage/noise detector circuit is included to detect when either a sustained overvoltage condition or a high, short duration overvoltage condition occurs. A low voltage detector circuit is included for detecting a low voltage, or brown-out, condition. When an overvoltage or low voltage condition is detected, a preferred embodiment of the invention switches the load to the auxiliary power signal within one-half cycle of, but in zero-crossing synchronization with, the primary power signal.

  • Patent number: 4703190
Abstract: A power supply system for a quadrupole mass spectrometer includes an RF (radio frequency) power source for generating RF voltages and a voltage divider functioning as a DC (direct current) voltage generating circuit. This voltage divider divides the RF voltages and then rectifies them so as to derive DC voltages while maintaining a proportional relationship to the RF voltages. Thereafter, the DC voltages are superimposed on the RF voltages. The resultant voltages are applied to the electrodes of the quadrupole mass spectrometer.

  • Patent number: 4703237
Abstract: A rain sensor for selectively supplying power from a constantly available power source to a wiper means (14) to remove moisture from a vehicle window (12) when moisture has collected. A passive circuit (18) is supported on the window (12) and has an initial self-resonant frequency to sense moisture. A generating means (20,120) creates an electromagnetic field having a range of frequencies wherein the initial self-resonant frequency is within the range of frequencies. An moisture collects about the passive circuit (18), the resonant frequency of the passive circuit (18) shifts away from the initial self-resonant frequency, indicative of less coupling with the generating means (20,20). A detector (28,128) detects the coupling between the passive circuit (18) and the generating means (20,120) to actuate the wiper means (14) by a control means (30,130) when a predetermined decoupling magnitude is exceeded.

  • Patent number: 4703242
Abstract: A magnetic disc head positioning system using a stepper motor eliminates positioning errors due to different approach directions and distances to a target track position through a drive control of temporarily stopping the head at a position immediately preceding or following the target track depending on the approach direction and, thereafter, moving the head from this position to the target track with a constant transient response. The head is brought to the temporary stop position by utilizing the overshooting response of the stepper motor so as to minimize the positioning time.

  • Patent number: 4703244
Abstract: A frequency divided pulse is produced by frequency dividing a clock signal by speed instruction data. When the current position of the pulse motor has not yet reached a set desired position, a frequency divided pulse is outputted as a forward rotation control pulse. When the current position has exceeded said set position, a frequency divided pulse is outputted as a reverse rotation control pulse. If the set desired position is changed while the pulse motor is rotating, this change of setting is detected and the output of the frequency divided pulse is inhibited for a predetermined settling period of time, thereby stopping the pulse motor. After the vibration of the rotor which occurs during the stepping of the pulse motor is settled, the reverse rotation of the pulse motor can be started, thereby preventing the occurrence of the step-out phenomenon of the pulse motor upon reverse rotation.
