Abstract: An apparatus and a method of providing an access control for transmitted stock market data from a central radio station to a plurality of one-way radio receivers. Into each receiver is inputted an access code including a cypher pointer which provides for scrambling of the remainder of the access code which includes the authorized services, the service cutoff date, and the unit serial number which is unique to a particular receiver. The cypher pointer is used to rotate a common map in the receiver used for unscrambling and in the central station used for scrambling. In order to receive service, the permanently stored serial number of the unit must compare with the serial number of the access code, the cutoff date must be greater than the present system date transmitted from the central station, and there must be an authorized service class.
Abstract: A photovoltaic device comprises a p-type amorphous layer, an intrinsic amorphous layer, and an n-type amorphous layer formed on a conductive or insulative substrate. The intrinsic amorphous layer is formed by glow discharge decomposition in the atmosphere of silicon tetrafluoride with discharge source frequency in the range between 10 kHz and 100 kHz.
Abstract: A combinational weighing system with a plurality of article batch handling units is controlled so that a high-speed dual or multiple packaging unit can be coupled and its capability can be utilized advantageously. For each cycle of the system operation, three or more combinations are selected by combinational computations on the weight values of article batches and they are discharged to the packaging unit through two discharge routes or more but fewer than the number of the selected combinations. This has the effect of discharging through each discharging route more than once per cycle.
Abstract: An optical system for selectively enhancing and/or suppressing the spectral intensity of components in an object beam, is disclosed. In one exemplary application, the optical system includes means for performing a forward transform operation on an input beam, a non-linear optical medium such as, for example, Bi.sub.12 SiO.sub.20 or Bi.sub.12 GeO.sub.20 and means for performing an inverse transform operation. In operation, the forward transform is performed on an input beam that contains a complex function characteristic of an object or subject, the resulting transform of the object beam is applied to the non-linear optical medium to form a hologram, then the hologram is read-out and the inverse transform operation is performed to provide an output optical beam that contains, for example, selectively enhanced intensity components and/or selectively suppressed intensity components.

Abstract: There is provided an improved MOS dynamic random access memory (DRAM) device having an array of dynamic RAM cells accessed by word and bit lines. Each memory cell comprises a single field-effect transistor coupled by its source to the gate of an MOS storage capacitor. The word lines are coupled to their respective memory cells at the gate of the field-effect transistor therein, while the bit lines are coupled to their respective memory cells at the drain of the field-effect transistor. The bit lines are organized into pairs of adjacent polysilicon lines that are coupled to all the memory cells on both sides of the bit lines in an alternating configuration. The word lines are coupled to alternating pairs of cells on opposite sides of the word lines.
Abstract: Layered structures (e.g., Al-Si/Ti/Al-Si . . . ) and homogeneous alloys of aluminum and aluminum/1 at. % silicon with titanium and tungsten and other refractory metals have been found to significantly reduce hillock densities in the films when small amounts of titanium or tungsten are homogeneously added. However, the resistivity of the films can become excessive. In addition, a new type of low density hillock can form. Layering of the films eliminates all hillocks and results in films of low resistivity. Such layered and homogeneous films made with Al-Si and Ti were found to be dry etchable. Electrical shorts in test structures with two levels of metal and LPCVD SiO.sub.2 as an interlayer dielectric have been characterized and layered films using Al-Si and Ti gave excellent results.

Abstract: A liquid level indicating device for a fuel tank adaptable for use in any size fuel tank comprising a mounting plate, a support arm depending therefrom, a float arm, a float, a linear wire-wound resistor, a sliding contact member, a device for varying the angle of tilt of the float arm, a device for varying the distance of the arc through which the float sweeps relative to the support arm, and a device for adjusting the effective resistance range of said resistor by controlling the length of travel of the sliding contact member along the linear wire-wound resistor.
Abstract: A portable hoist is provided for lifting, transporting, and depositing loads onto a platform, such as a work bench, or into a vehicle, such as a pick-up truck. The portable hoist comprises a mounting for attachment to the a wall of a vehicle or a work bench, an upright support structure connected to the mounting by a hinge connection which allows for swinging movement of the support structure about its vertical axis, and a boom pivotally secured at one end to the upper end of the support structure such that the free end of the boom can be raised and lowered. A hydraulic operator acting between the support structure and the boom serves to raise and lower the boom. A sheave is carried at the free end of the boom and a hoist line connected to the support structure loops over the sheave and carries a hook assembly for attachment to the load to be lifted.
Abstract: An intrinsically hinged structural member is disclosed which can easily be bent, rolled or folded in one direction while exhibiting high resistance to bending, rolling or folding in the opposite direction. The general form of the structural member comprises a continuous side wall, a plurality of inner walls and a segmented outer wall. The inner walls confining cavities extending through the member. The slits in the segment outer wall define confronting faces which when forced together under stress exhibit a high resistance to any further bending or folding of the segment wall. Preferably, the confronting faces are complementary; the complementary faces which comprise male and female portions may periodically alternate from one side of the slit to the other to provide further resistance to torsional stress.
Abstract: Improved nuclei excitation for NMR applications is provided by employing a sequence of RF pulses for exciting the nuclei. Non-linearities in pulse excitation are compensated by applying at least one additional RF pulse thereby improving slice definition and/or phase characteristics. In one application, one or more initial RF pulses establish an intermediate state for the nuclei from which the nuclei can be tilted to a final desired magnetic moment state by the application of a single RF pulse. The order of applying the magnetic pulses can be reversed when the flip/angle is 180 degrees.

Abstract: A drilling attachment for a utility truck designed for digging pole holes for ordinary utility and telephone poles is disclosed herein. The attachment is intended to replace the auger portion of a conventional auger digger when it is necessary to drill through rock or other hard materials. The excavating method contemplated employs a three step process. First, a deep kerf is cut into the rock by a plurality of drill bits that are independently driven in a rotary/percussive manner while being rotated about the circumference of the kerf. The dust and rock fragments generated by this process are removed from the kerf by an air flushing/vacuum system, that also serves to cool the drill bits. Second, a hydraulic piston is inserted into the kerf and expanded, thereby applying a lateral force to the base of the resultant core causing it to break away from the surrounding rock. Finally an expandable plug is inserted into a pilot hole located at the center of the core.

Abstract: A stereoscopic or three dimensional radiograph or a continuously rotating three dimensional radiograph of a patient is obtained using a high speed CT scanning system in which fan beams of radiation are generated by sweeping an electron beam along a target. Collimated X-rays emitted by the target are received by an array of detectors after passing through a patient area between the target and the array of detectors. Two detector positions, comprising one or more detectors, each can be employed to obtain a pair of two dimensional projection radiographs. The radiographs are alternately viewed by a viewer by selectively opening and closing shutter means associated with the eyes of the viewer as the radiographs are alternately assembled for viewing whereby one eye sees one radiograph and the other eye sees the other radiograph. Alternatively, a plurality of pairs of detector positions can be employed in measuring radiation and obtaining a continuously rotating three dimensional projection radiograph.
