Abstract: A therapeutic lens for the treatment of an epithelial defect comprises a layer of therapeutic material disposed over the stroma and/or Bowman's membrane to inhibit water flow from the tear liquid to the stroma and/or Bowman's membrane, such that corneal deturgescence can be restored to decrease corneal swelling and light scattering. The layer may cover and protect nerve fibers to decrease pain. The layer may comprise an index of refraction to inhibit light scatter from an anterior surface of the stroma and/or Bowman's membrane. The lens may comprise a curved anterior surface that provides functional vision for the patient when the epithelium regenerates. The layer of therapeutic material can be positioned on the eye in many ways, for example with a spray that is cured to adhere the layer to the exposed surface of the stroma and/or Bowman's membrane.

Abstract: An quaternary phosphonium ion-exchanged clay and method of removing organic contaminants from air and/or water, by contacting the contaminants in the air or water with a quaternary phosphonium organo-clay. The clay is prepared by ion-exchange of an ion-exchangeable clay with (a) tetra-short chain alkyl (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4) quaternary phosphonium ion or (b) a di- or tri-short chain alkyl (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4) quaternary phosphonium ion having 1 or 2 mono-substituted or unsubstituted cycloakyl moieties, or one or two alkaryl moieties for removing air-laden and water-laden organic contaminants. The new organo-clays and methods are particularly adapted for removal of aromatic petroleum-based contaminants from water, such as benzene; alkylbenzenes, such as toluene; xylenes (o-, m- and p-isomers); and chlorinated 1 and 2 carbon compounds, such as CCl.sub.4.

Abstract: A molding apparatus is provided which comprises a lower mold portion and an upper mold portion movable into engagement with the lower portion. A movable spray head is disposed on a traversing rack mounted within a retractable coating box. The coating box upper surface contains a first opening corresponding in size and shape to the outer periphery of the mold cavity of the upper mold and a second opening which corresponds in size and shape to the opening of an overspray recovery transition piece disposed at a position adjacent the fully disengaged upper mold portion. Prior to a molding operation, the coating box engages the upper mold permitting both the transition piece opening and cavity opening in the top surface of the box to align with the transition piece and cavity, respectively.

Abstract: A therapeutic system comprises an ocular insert placed on a region outside an optical zone of an eye. The ocular insert comprises two structures: a first skeletal structure and a second cushioning structure. The first structure functions as a skeletal frame which maintains positioning of the implant along the anterior portion of the eye and provides support to the second, cushioning structure. This first structure maintains the attachment of the therapeutic system to the anterior portion of the eye for at least thirty days. In some embodiments the first structure remains a constant size and shape, e.g. a ring shape, a ring with haptics, or a curvilinear ring that is confined to and restrainingly engages the inferior and superior conjunctival fornices so as to retain the implant within the tear fluid and/or against the tissues of the eye.

Abstract: An illumination panel has four peripheral edges constructed of an upper plate and a lower plate. Each of the plates has aligned peripheral edges and an upper and lower surface. The upper plate is fabricated of an optically reflective material. The lower plate is fabricated of an optically diffusive material. Each of the illumination panels includes a peripheral frame formed of four edge pieces. Each of the edge pieces is in a cross sectional configuration to receive and support the peripheral edges of the plates. A pair of opposed recesses face each other in the edge pieces. A printed circuit board with a plurality of light emitting diodes is supported in the edge pieces by the recesses. An electrical connector is adapted to disperse electrical power to the light emitting diodes.
Abstract: A satellite communications system operative with at least one existing terrestrial communication system for carrying traffic is described. The communication system has a plurality of satellites in earth orbits, each satellite including a battery for sourcing electrical energy. The battery has energy sourcing limits. Gateways, bidirectionally linked to the plurality of satellites are also provided. A computing center, linked to the gateways, has a traffic control means for allocating traffic to the gateways. The traffic control means has three parts a power demand model for computing a first traffic allocation of traffic for each satellite; a satellite battery performance model descriptive of the energy sourcing limits of the on-board batteries; and a control law for applying weights to the first traffic allocation by using the battery performance model to obtain a second traffic allocation for each satellite.

Abstract: A method and system in a wireless communications network are provided for restricting communication transactions based on the geographic location of originators and terminators within the wireless communications network. First, a communications transaction is initiated. In response to an initiation of the communications transaction, a geographic location of an originator of the communications transaction is determined. In response to determining the geographic location of the originator, a geographic location of a terminator of the communications transaction is determined. The geographic location of the originator is thereafter automatically compared to the geographic location of the terminator. The communications transaction is completed based upon a selected proximity of the geographic location of the originator to the geographic location of the terminator.
