Abstract: A method for calibrating a monochromator to compensate for mechanical imperfections in its diffraction grating and grating drive assembly employs a two stage interactive procedure which permits the use of small (0.2 nm) spectral regions for the identification of emission lines. An iterative, self-consistent, discrete Fourier transform is used for the determination of multiple positioning correction terms. When the Fourier calculations are completed, the results of the calibration procedure are presented by the system to the analyst for acceptance. If accepted, the positioning error of the primary calibration line is measured, stored and used by the system to maintain a zero centered distribution of positioning errors each time the monochromator is reinitialized.
Abstract: A structural interlock (40) for inhibiting relative rotation between mating elements (20, 42) characterized by a plurality of grooves (50) being formed in one of the mating elements, and a mechanism (60) for producing a nominal contact pressure on the contact area (A.sub.1 thru A.sub.8) between the mating element, which contact pressure elastically deforms the other of the mating elements into the grooves (50), and is less than the material yield strength of either of the mating elements. In the preferred embodiment, the grooves (50) are radially oriented and an applied compressive load produces a nominal contact pressure which is about 80% of the material yield strength.

Abstract: A smoking article is provided in which a replaceable tobacco flavor unit containing tobacco flavor material is electrically heated by a set of permanent reusable heaters to evolve flavors or other components in vapor or aerosol form for delivery to a smoker. Each heater heats only a portion of the available tobacco flavor material so that a plurality of individual puffs of tobacco flavor substance can be delivered sequentially to the smoker. The replaceable tobacco flavor unit can also include a filter to reduce the effect of residual aerosol which settles or condenses on the permanent portions of the article and which can result in undesirable flavor generation when reheated. A method and apparatus for manufacturing the replaceable tobacco flavor unit is also provided.

Abstract: An apparatus and method which provides a suitable location for multiple, simultaneous synthesis of compounds. The apparatus consists of: a reservoir block having a plurality of wells; a plurality of reaction tubes, usually gas dispersion tubes, having filters on their lower ends; a holder block, having a plurality of apertures; and a manifold, which may have ports to allow introduction/maintenance of a controlled environment. The manifold top wall has apertures and a detachable plate with identical apertures. The apparatus is constructed from materials which will accommodate heating, cooling, agitation, or corrosive reagents. Gaskets are placed between the components. Rods or clamps are provided for fastening the components together. Apparatus operation involves placing the filters on the lower ends of the reaction tubes in the reservoir block wells, and the upper ends passing through the holder block apertures and into the manifold.

Abstract: A reliable, pulse-flow supplemental oxygen apparatus for alleviating respiratory ailments is provided which yields substantial savings in oxygen while giving the patient the physiological equivalent of a prescribed continuous stream of oxygen. The apparatus preferably includes a demand oxygen valve operated in a pulse mode by means of electronic control circuitry which, through an appropriate sensor, monitors the patient's breathing efforts and gives a variable "custom tailored" pulse volume of oxygen to the patient during the very initial stages of each inspiration. Pulse volume variability is based upon a measured parameter characterizing at least a part of one and preferably a plurality of the patient's preceding breaths; advantageously, the elapsed time interval of the patient's three preceding breath cycles is measured to effectively measure breath rate.
