  • Patent number: 5410688
Abstract: An object based data processing system comprising a plurality of storage domains arranged so that a semantic object in a second storage domain can be accessed by the user of a first storage domain by the creation of a new presentation object in the first storage domain which is linked via a transient communication link to the semantic object in the second storage domain. Each storage domain includes a global object into which the user of the storage domain can place objects to be made accessible to other storage domains and a distributed object containing the global objects of all other storage domains. By opening a distributed object in any storage domain, the user is given access to the global objects of other storage domains, including those of other users.

  • Patent number: 5410692
Abstract: A data processing system has access to a memory storing a data or other information base. The data processing system evaluates objects from the data base against search criteria generated from parameters entered into the data processing system by a user. As objects are located by execution of a search program meeting the search criteria, those objects are identified to the user while the search continues. The user can access the object for substantive evaluation for conformance to the desired target data. The user may enter modified parameters based upon his evaluation of such results as obtained. The data processing system then continues the search over each part of the database as the user designates.

  • Patent number: 5408976
Abstract: An apparatus and method for use in diagnosing an evaporative emission canister collection and purge system. An EVAP system of a vehicle can be diagnosed through the use of a swellable adsorbent disposed in the system's canister. The swellable adsorbent is expandable upon adsorption of fuel vapors and contractible upon desorption. By sensing the expansion and contraction response, a diagnostic mechanism can determine whether the vapor collection and purge functions are operating properly.

  • Patent number: 5407792
Abstract: The present invention relates to photosensitive silver halide recording material with reduced pressure sensitivity. The occurrence of pressure marks can be minimized by protective layers with suitable additives. Other properties of the recording material, such as sensitivity, contrast, and clarity, are not affected adversely. Recording materials with protective layers containing polyolefin oxidates are largely insensitive to pressure marks and have low haze, high sensitivity, and high contrast. The invention's recording materials can be used in all fields of photographic and radiographic image production, especially in reproducing color images in steps preliminary to printing and in recording x-ray images for medical diagnostics.

  • Patent number: 5408656
Abstract: A method and system for efficiently accessing desired datasets among multiple datasets which are stored at specific data addresses within multiple storage subsystems which are coupled to a host system via a storage subsystem controller and a data channel. A data request is transmitted from the host system to the storage subsystems via the data channel. The data request specifies non-address attributes for desired datasets, such as boundary addresses for large data extents including many datasets or a request for all datasets modified since the occurrence of a specified event. The data request is then processed at the storage subsystem controller to determine a data address for each dataset within the storage subsystem which possess the desired attributes. Thereafter, the desired datasets are transmitted via the data channel to the host system in association with a specific address for each dataset.

  • Patent number: 5407281
Abstract: A self-replenishing hydrodynamic bearing unit comprises a shaft and housing defining an opening for receiving the shaft for relative unidirectional rotation. A plurality of reservoirs contain a lubricating fluid. A hydrodynamic bearing region lies between the plurality of reservoirs for providing a rotational journal for relative rotation between the shaft and the housing. At least one of the shaft and the housing defines a continuous pattern of herringbone or Vee-shaped pumping grooves or passages which communicate between the plurality of reservoirs for pumping the lubricating fluid during relative rotation. The groove pumping creates a pressurized hydrodynamic bearing lubricant film at the bearing region with each groove generating localized unidirectional directional flow of lubricating liquid between the reservoirs along a predetermined axial direction of rotation, wherein some passages create axial flow in a forward direction and the others create axial flow in a reverse direction.

  • Patent number: 5406477
Abstract: A computer-based method and apparatus for enterprise analysis, with which a user can generate value projections by applying, in parallel, multiple reasoning methods. The invention presents a method and apparatus for creating a complex, networked model of an enterprise, or system and its environment, that is structured from categorized objects and relationships. Using the model, the present invention is self sufficient in determining which areas of the multiple reasoning methods to appy to the variable projection problem. Applying reasoning methods to a single projection problem generates a set of conflicting intermediate hypotheses that the present invention can resolve to form a single final hypothesis through a reconciliation process that evaluates quality factors associated with the intermediate hypotheses. A problem solution tree tracks the solution process to provide to the user a full explanation of the methods chosen or discarded and data relied upon or disregarded.

  • Patent number: 5404515
Abstract: A communications control system in a multi-processor system includes a connection distribution data structure, including, for each central processing unit, a connection count means for storing a number representing the number of communication connections currently being executed by the corresponding central processing unit, and a gate driver interface service module. The gate driver interface service module is a single task resident in the computer system memory with an active invocation in a single central processing unit of the processing system. The gate driver interface service module responds to each request by selecting the central processing unit presently executing the least number of communication connections, and assigning the communication connection to the central processing unit for execution by constructing a corresponding control block containing the identification of the central processing unit assigned to execute the communication operation.

  • Patent number: 5404510
Abstract: Design of indexes in a relational database management system is based on a workload analysis of all requests in a system. Each request is assigned a value of importance, and requests are broken into expressions, contexts and columns to facilitate identification of candidate indexes. Candidate indexes are compared to existing indexes to determine whether the existing indexes can be reused or modified. Candidate indexes are classified as hashed or sorted. Based on the index design, record placement is selected to be hashed, sorted or by default. Related indexes and tables are clustered and the clusters are sized to fit file areas. Cache buffers are also defined.

  • Patent number: 5404509
Abstract: A computer-based method and apparatus for auditing electronic information, most often a database. A database auditor of the present invention conducts an audit as specified by a user-defined project. The project indicates focus groups, filters, skews and whether to count blank entries. The database auditor selects a sample representative of the view of the database described by the project. It presents the sample to the user in a standardized set of reports or on-line forms. The user then determines the number errors contained in the sample and communicates these data to the database auditor. The database auditor uses the error data to calculate the accuracy of the database, as well as the accuracies of the individual fields and focus groups, and to presents these accuracies to the user. Finally, the database auditor charts areas of accuracy and inaccuracy by field and focus group and indicates which inaccuracies are due to process errors and which are due to user errors.

An annular sealing plate 3 is secured to the sleeve 2 and interegagging with the shaft 1 external to the bearing and the circumferential groove 1a. A labyrinth is formed between the inner-diametric domain of the sealing plate 3. An annular recessed domain 2c is defined by internal circumferential surface of the sleeve 2 and the sealing plate 3 at a position substantially opposite the circumferential groove 1a. An oil-pooling space 4 thereby formed by the shaft 1, the circumferential groove 1a, the sleeve 2, the sealing plate 3, and the annular recessed domain 2c.
