  • Patent number: 6193487
Abstract: A scroll-type vacuum pump wherein an expander and a compressor are arranged in series, in two stages, in the same housing and driven by the same shaft. The first stage is a scroll-type expander. It is in series with a scroll-type compressor, which is the second stage. The volume of the suction pockets of the second stage, the compressor, is not significantly smaller than the volume of the discharge pockets of the first stage device, the expander. Thus, the amount of heat associated with the re-expansion and compression process is reduced. The two stage pump also includes a double shaft seal mechanism which seals off the suction chamber of the expander from both the ambient and the discharge chamber of the expander. The two stage pump of the invention further includes a labyrinth structure at the tip surfaces of the scroll elements to tightly control the axial gap between the tips and bases of the mating scroll elements.

  • Publication number: 20150285204
Abstract: An internal combustion engine includes a ring gear, a speed sensor operatively associated with the ring gear, and a change of mind (COM) starter motor mechanically linked to the internal combustion engine. The COM starter motor includes an armature and a pinion operatively connected to the armature. A solenoid is operatively connected to the COM starter motor. The solenoid selectively moves the pinion into engagement with the ring gear. An electronic control unit (ECU) is operatively connected to the speed sensor and the solenoid. The ECU is configured and disposed to indirectly detect a rotational speed of the pinion and selectively energize the solenoid to axially shift the pinion into engagement with the ring gear when the pinion reaches a particular rotational speed relative to a rotational speed of the ring gear.

Abstract: A robot executes motion by modifying a motion behavior on the basis of a motion direction of a user on board according to a state of mind of the user on board. This produces the motion of the vehicle under conditions that reflect the user's state of mind. The robot preferably includes a direction input portion that receives the motion direction from the user and generates a reference input corresponding to the motion direction, and an inverted control reference input generator that generates a motion reference input that makes the robot execute motion in a behavior different from the motion behavior on the basis of the motion direction, based at least on a reduction coefficient with a value corresponding to the user's state of mind and the reference input generated in the direction input portion. The reduction coefficient is determined by measuring the pulse rate of the user on board.

  • Patent number: 6456892
Abstract: A method and system for providing a user interface for a networked target device within a home audio/visual network. The DDI allows any DDI target to describe its physical appearance including controls and displays, etc., to a DDI controller. The controller can be a remote physical device or can be a software program resident on the same or separate device as the target. The controller interfaces with the target to obtain the DDI data and generates a user interface for the target including: 1) interactive controls; and 2) user display information pertinent to the target. The DDI allows the controller to trigger actions on the target as if a user had physically manipulated the controls of the target. The controller and the target are connected to the same communication network. A particular embodiment operates within the HAVi architecture. The controller communicates with the user by using the input and output devices of (typically) the device upon which the controller is executing.

  • Patent number: 6577939
Abstract: A modular electronic control system for a geared multiple-ratio transmission wherein pressure profiles for each ratio shift actuator are used to provide seamless transitions during both positive and negative engine torque conditions to improve shift feel and responsiveness to ratio change commands. The system provides shift staging for sequenced shifts between ratios as well as for so-called “change-of-mind” shifts in which a sequence shift is interrupted as a new destination gear is introduced. A constant ratio change occurs during sequenced shifts. A change-of-mind shift can be performed directly where the new destination gear is commanded immediately. Independent pressure profiles for each clutch involved in a commanded shift are used to accommodate various types of shifts.

  • Patent number: 6059540
Abstract: A scroll-type fluid displacement apparatus has two interfitting spiral-shaped scroll members which have predetermined geometric configurations. The novel design provides an oil-gas separation and circulation system in which the oil, through a reservoir in the close proximity of the thrust bearing and metering orifices network, is properly and promptly directed to the scroll compression chamber, Oldham ring and bearings to provide lubrication and cooling. This invention also provides a notch mechanism at the tip of the orbiting scroll member during operation to avoid the orbiting scroll wrap from completely blocking the oil injection ports of small size on the fixed scroll base. This invention further relates to a gas intake system which directs gas from the oil-gas separator/sump to close the intake control valve and maintain low power consumption during unload mode.

  • Patent number: 5271627
Abstract: A multidimensional equilateral angular game playing apparatus and method include electronically controlled, life-sized obelisk "opponents" in the vertex of each angle. A sound generator and multiple lighted targets are mounted upon variously angled surfaces of each obelisk so that a target becomes momentarily active when its light is illuminated and a sound generator mounted upon the obelisk holding the target is actuated. The sequence of targets presented to a player and the time duration of each activation may be selected in a random manner by electronic controls. A single player strikes activated targets using thrusting and sweeping motions of a double-sided, padded playing staff. Upon successfully striking a target, the sound generator upon which obelisk the target is mounted emits a tone verifying the success of the strike, a point is added to a total sum of successful strikes, the target is deactivated and the next target is immediately presented to the player.

The video game system may include a biometric controller such as an EEG device or configured to detect a level of attention and a level of relaxation of the player through electrical impulses exhibited by a player's brain and/or pulse oximetry monitoring device. These determined levels of attention and relaxation may be interpreted by the video game system into one or more actions in or changes to a video game environment. Additionally or alternatively, video games may be used to train a player to lower stress and improve concentration or focus. The games may be entertainment based or non-entertainment related (e.g., instructional/exercise focused). Further, combinations of controllers may be used to control various aspects of a video game or training program to exercise both body and mind.
