  • Patent number: 11668463
Abstract: A combustor of an aircraft engine comprises a liner defining a primary and a dilution zone having a hot surface exposed to a flow of combustion gases traveling from the primary zone downstream to the dilution zone and a cold surface. Dilution holes extending through the liner from the cold to the hot surface delimit the primary from the dilution zone. Effusion holes extending through the liner from the cold to the hot surface direct cooling air into the dilution zone. Two or more rows of effusion holes positioned within three dilution hole diameters downstream of the dilution holes are oriented relative to the liner to direct the cooling air in a cooling direction that is at least one of normal to the direction of the flow of gases passing adjacent the effusion holes, and against the direction of the flow of gases passing adjacent the effusion holes.

  • Patent number: 8745988
Abstract: A heat shield unit for a gas turbine engine combustor comprises a panel body secured to a combustor liner. A first surface of the body is oriented toward a combustion zone of a combustor. A second surface is oriented toward the liner. The body is separated into upstream and downstream portions. Pin fins project from the second surface of the body. The pin fins are arranged in arrays of at least two different densities of volume of pin fins per unit volume. One density, lower than the second density, is in the upstream portion and another in the downstream portion of the body. Connectors connect the body to the liner with a line between the upstream and downstream portions of the body aligned with fluid-coolant injection apertures in the liner. A gas turbine engine combustor and a method for cooling a heat shield unit in a combustor liner of a gas turbine engine are also provided.

  • Publication number: 20150052901
Abstract: A combustor heat shield assembly comprises a circumferential array of heat shield panels individually mounted to an inner surface of a combustor shell. Each heat shield panel has a sealing rail extending from a back side thereof and a plurality of bolted connections securely holding the heat shield panel on the combustor shell with the sealing rail in sealing contact with the inner surface of the combustor shell. Each pair of adjacent heat shield panels comprises first and second panels having adjoining lateral edges, the first panel having a boltless area on its back side at a location adjacent to its adjoining lateral edge. The second panel has a first one of its bolted connections provided adjacent to its adjoining lateral edge and in facing relationship with the boltless area of the first panel.
