Abstract: Volatile organic compounds containing carbonyl groups can be released by lithographic printing materials including inks, fountain solutions and printed materials. Volatile organic compounds containing carbonyl groups can also have a serious negative impact on the taste or odor of staple materials such as foodstuffs. The volatile materials can be retained in the lithographic compositions and printed materials can be trapped in the printed materials using an improved reactive technology involving a chemically reactive trap for such volatile carbonyl containing compounds.

  • Publication number: 20140232357
Abstract: Methods and systems for controlling a reactive power contribution to reactive power flowing in an electricity distribution network, so as to optimise this reactive power flow are described. A reactive power characteristic of electrical power flowing in the electricity distribution network is detected at a power device. The reactive power characteristic relates to a reactive power component of electricity flowing in the network. On the basis of the detected reactive power characteristic a reactive power contribution to the electricity distribution network is controlled so as to adjust a value of the detected reactive power characteristic. This enables individual power consumption and/or provision devices to react autonomously to local variations in the electricity distribution network, and to provide a reactive power contribution, to drive the detected reactive power characteristic towards a desired value.

  • Patent number: 8892268
Abstract: Methods and systems for measuring and/or managing power consumption by power units connected to an electricity distribution network are disclosed. Power flow to and/or from a power unit connected to an electricity distribution network is controlled in accordance with a control sequence, such that the consumption and/or provision of power by the power unit results in a power flow having a predefined flow pattern, and having a characteristic, such as an amplitude, which can be remotely measured. This measurement may be performed using a method in which a signal indicative of power flowing at a measurement node is measured and correlated with a predefined pattern, and a characteristic of the correlated signal is measured. Thus, power flow characteristics resulting from a group of one or more power flow devices can be remotely detected and measured.

  • Patent number: 10997674
Abstract: Methods, and apparatus for determining a characteristic of an inertial contribution to an electrical power grid are described. A change in inertia in the electrical power grid based on one or more inertia measurements performed in a first time period is determined. On the basis of the determined change in inertia and data indicative of an inertia contribution characteristic of one or more energy production facilities and/or one or more energy consuming devices in the electric power grid, a characteristic of an inertial contribution to the electrical power grid is determined for a second time period different to the first time period.

  • Patent number: 11216893
Abstract: Methods, computer software and apparatus for use in an electric power grid are described. Measurement data is received intermittently or continuously from a plurality of measurement units, indicating values of at least one measured characteristic at respective measurement locations. The at least one is characteristic is monitored, and it is determined, based on the monitoring, that there has been a change in electric power flow in the electric power grid. Responsive to the determination, component data is accessed relating to characteristics of components of the electric power grid involved in provision and/or consumption of electric power. Based on received measurement data relating to the change and the accessed component data, a power flow characteristic of the grid in a given time period is determined.

  • Patent number: 10193721
Abstract: Methods, apparatus and computer programs for transmitting and/or receiving information are described. Information encoded in a carrier signal comprising a modulation pattern superimposed on a grid frequency at which electricity flows in a synchronous area of an electric power grid, is decoded by measuring, at a receiving device, a characteristic relating to a frequency of electricity flowing in the electric power grid, accessing data indicative of one or more predetermined code patterns and performing a correlation process to determine a correlation between the modulation pattern and one of the one or more predetermined code patterns. The information is decoded on the basis of the determined correlation. This enables information to be easily transmitted within a synchronous area of the electric power grid.

Abstract: Methods, and apparatus for determining inertia within a synchronous area of an electric power grid are described. A frequency characteristic relating to a frequency of electricity flowing in the electric power grid is measured, a magnitude relating to a power flow modulation is determined based on data relating to power characteristics of one or more power units arranged to consume electric power from and/or provide real and/or reactive electric power to the electric power grid, and a frequency response characteristic associated with at least one area of the electric power grid is determined on the basis of the measured frequency characteristic and the determined magnitude characteristic. • Publication number: 20120245752
Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for controlling electrical energy consumption in an electricity distribution network, so as to reduce net energy consumption in a given area during a given time period, are described. In particular, a method of controlling electrical energy consumption within an electricity distribution network is described. The method comprises maintaining a database of information about electric devices, and identifying a time period during which consumption of electrical energy is to be controlled. The method further comprises selecting, based on device profile information stored in the database, groups of electric devices, and associating one or more time intervals with each of the selected groups. Requests are sent to the electric devices of the selected groups to control electrical energy consumption and/or provision by the electric devices. This enables a reduction in net consumption of electrical energy during a respective time interval.

  • Patent number: 11112437
Abstract: Apparatus and methods for determining an inertia characteristic of a synchronous area of an electric power grid are described. First data is determined. The first data represents a signal comprising a first variation in the grid frequency over a period of time, the signal resulting from a second variation, the second variation being a variation in provision of electric power to and/or consumption of electric power from the grid, the signal having been filtered according to a first filter defining a first frequency band to at least attenuate frequencies outside of the first frequency band. Second data is determined. The second data is representative of the second variation on a second frequency band, the second frequency band being substantially the same as the first frequency band. An inertia characteristic of a synchronous area of the electric power grid is determined based on the first data and the second data.
