Patent number: 8612564Abstract: A method and apparatus for serving content requests using global and local load balancing techniques is provided. Web site content is cached using two or more point of presences (POPs), wherein each POP has at least one DNS server. Each DNS server is associated with the same anycast IP address. A domain name resolution request is transmitted to the POP in closest network proximity for resolution based on the anycast IP address. Once the domain name resolution request is received at a particular POP, local load balancing techniques are performed to dynamically select the appropriate Web server at the POP for use in resolving the domain name resolution request. Approaches are described for handling bursts of traffic at a particular POP, security, and recovering from the failure of various components of the system.Type: GrantFiled: January 18, 2012Date of Patent: December 17, 2013Assignee: Akamai Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Eric Sven-Johan Swildens, Zaide Liu, Richard David Day

Patent number: 7539757Abstract: A method for a computer network includes a plurality of customer web servers, each of the customer web servers storing a web page, using a POP DNS server to determine a customer web server from the plurality of customer web servers, the customer web server having a traffic load lower than traffic loads of other customer web servers in the plurality of customer web servers, requesting the web page from the customer web server, the web page including static content represented by an embedded URL, resolving the URL to a POP DNS server within a POP server network, using the POP DNS server to determine a web cache from a plurality of web caches to provide static content for the URL.Type: GrantFiled: May 28, 2007Date of Patent: May 26, 2009Assignee: Akamai Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Eric Sven-Johan Swildens, Ajit K. Patent number: 10601768Abstract: Automated steady state traffic management is provided for a distributed platform through immediate or real-time simulation of the capacity and performance impacts associated with shifting different load increments to different Points-of-presence (PoPs) of the distributed platform and by automatic and dynamic traffic management reconfiguration in response to an optimal set of changes identified from the simulation. A system produces data models to track the current distributed platform state and detect deviates from the steady state. Using the data models and scoring functions, the system scores the impact that different shifts of load to different destinations have on the overall distributed platform. The scoring reveals the optimal set of traffic management configuration changes that restore the steady state with the least capacity and performance impact.Type: GrantFiled: April 10, 2017Date of Patent: March 24, 2020Assignee: Verizon Digital Media Services Inc.Inventors: Marcel Eric Schechner Flores, Colin Rasor
