  • Patent number: 5057434
Abstract: An accurate monitoring of the conditions of a perishable product is achieved by integrating two indicator types - a primary indicator which develops a color change as a result of cumulative time-temperature exposure and a threshold second indicator - into a single device. The combination of the two indicators in the same indicator device provides a human readible signal that gradually and irreversibly develops color as a function of time and temperature and more closely monitors the actual condition of a deteriorative product than does a single indicator. Important features of this integrated monitoring device are reliability and printability. The primary indicator in the system is assisted in color development by the secondary indictor that is set to trigger at a predetermined temperature. When this temperature is reached or exceeded both indicator mechanisms function in an additive mode to cause a break in the typical Arrhenius curve, which a primary indicator alone produces.

  • Patent number: 5010603
Abstract: An improved swimming pool construction of the kind capable of being erected, at least substantially, above ground on a substantially flat surface is provided. The swimming pool is of a construction whose modular components are prefabricated and delivered to the building site for assembly. A bracing member comprised of four cut pieces of standard construction lumber, and provided in pre-assembled modular form, provides load bearing qualities that afford sufficient strength without the need to supply any additional support means that are anchored in the ground. The swimming pool is fabricated from a plurality of wall panels that are secured end-to-end and form the periphery of the swimming pool and contain integrally formed flanges that retain the brace in position. The prefabricated pool delivered to the building site as a package, employs an arrangement of modular elements to provide a self standing swimming pool that can be assembled, using only hand tools to lock together the respective modular parts.

  • Patent number: 4964358
Abstract: A small boat or dinghy rigging mechanism is provided advantageously designed to permit the expeditious recovery, hoisting and stowing of a small boat or dinghy in an upright position at the stern of a main vessel. The apparatus of the invention is devised to be readily detached from the main vessel and stowed so that any unsightly presence of the equipment when it is not being used is obviated. The rigger equipment may be detachably affixed for use directly on the transom of a vessel or adapted to be detachably secured at the trailing edge of a platform such as swim platform that is behind the transom. Because the mechanism is devised to dip into the water allowing the small boat or dinghy to be floated into position on the arms of the rigging apparatus, it substantially facilitates the recovery of such craft and obviates any heavy lifting or exertion of the kind frequently encountered by a user in operations of this kind.

  • Patent number: 4917503
Abstract: A photoactivated time-temperature indicator is based on a leuco base system. A thermally insensitive, white ("inactive") leuco base (or a mixture of such leuco bases) is mixed, preferably in a polymeric matrix, with a material that generates acid upon exposure to light. Photoexcitation, preferably by UV or near UV light, causes the formation of a thermally sensitive, color-forming ("active") product. Following this activation step, a progressive color development occurs at a rate that increases with temperature. The indicator is useful for monitoring the freshness of perishable products, particularly those stored at subambient temperature.

  • Patent number: 4892677
Abstract: A new process is described which is useful for producing novel articles of manufacture useful for monitoring the time-temperature history of perishable items. The process initially involves forming a solution comprised of a diacetylenic monomer and a solvent. The solution is frozen, and the frozen solution having crystalline diacetylenic monomer therein is irradiated to partially polymerize the diacetylenic monomer. Partial polymerization of the crystalline diacetylenic monomer admixed with frozen solvent results in the production of a novel article of manufacture having color. The novel article of manufacture is comprised of frozen solvent, diacetylenic monomer, and colored polydiacetylene. Due to the intensity of the color of the polydiacetylene, the entire article of manufacture appears to be colored. The colored article of manufacture may be attached to various perishables to monitor the shelf life of the perishables.

  • Patent number: 4873802
Abstract: A system to impart controlled rigidity to the flexure of a molded plastic structural module is provided. In the system a means for effectively bonding two plastic members and which maintains the integrity of the bond under severely ambient conditions resulting from differences in coefficients of expansion, moisture, flexing and the like, is disclosed. Delamination of the bond, particularly under the flexing condition is minimized by an intermittent bonding surface such as by bonding at the peaks or top points solely of a serrated surface. The system is particularly useful in the provision of a rigidizing member for treads of a plastic stair module for swimming pools. In use as a support for prefabricated plastic swimming pool stair modules, the preformed stair module is equipped with a suitable structural shaped metal rigidizing element that has been encapsulated in a plastic composition.
