  • Patent number: 4577634
Abstract: An improved dual chamber cardiac pacing apparatus detects retrograde P-waves conduction by either determining polarity of the P-wave at a location in the right atrium adjacent the A-V node; or the sequence of signals which appear at this predetermined location and at a second predetermined location in the atrium in proximity to the sinus node. The pacing apparatus will ignore retrograde P-waves when initiating sequential pacing in the ventricle. In addition, the pacing apparatus will provide a burst of high rate atrial pacing pulses upon detection of the simultaneous occurrence of retrograde P-wave conduction, high rate heart beat and narrow QRS complexes.

  • Patent number: 4573300
Abstract: There is provided an extruded, modular panel unit for the construction of wall-surface portions, especially of light-transmitting wall-surface portions. The panel comprises two sheet-like major surfaces interconnected and spaced apart by a plurality of web-like ribs dividing the space delimited by the major surfaces into a plurality of subspaces, and at least one joining flange extending in the direction of extrusion and projecting at an angle from an edge of the panel unit. In cross section, the sheet-like major surfaces and the ribs form a truss-like structure of which the major surfaces constitute the chords and the ribs constitute the webs.

  • Patent number: 4560118
Abstract: A drive mechanism for fishing reels is disclosed which includes a spool supported on bearings and a shaft, carried in spaced side plates of a reel frame. The reel includes a cam operated brake mechanism which includes a plurality of stops, with an axially slidable spool shaft. One of the bearings carries a shaft supporting a bearing and drive mechanism which includes a handle, positioning pin and gears slidably mounted on shafts, which upon selective manipulation will engage one of two sets of gears, thereby determining the drive ratio available to the handle for varying the speed of spool rotation as desired. The gear ratios are selected to provide that upon backward or counterclockwise handle rotation against the stops, the teeth of the gears of the lower ratio will always be angularly aligned with the internal teeth of the ring gear to provide for gear shifting.

  • Patent number: 4541200
Abstract: In a swing-tilt fitting for mounting the wing of a window or door to its frame, an arresting means is provided which is operatively associated with the locking rod linkage which controls the operational mode of the wing. Since between every two of the three positions (closure, swinging, tilting) of the operating linkage a lost motion is present, the locking rod linkage can be utilized for actuating the arresting means. Said arresting means can be disposed either laterally between the wing and frame of a window or a door or between tilt shears and members disposed in the upper locking rod channel. The tilt position, which can be stepwise or infinitely variable, is secured by actuating the operating grip of the linkage out of the tilt position into one of the two other positions, closure or swinging. The tilt arrest is effected either by engagement of tooth members or by turning a brake member guided in a hollow rod.

  • Patent number: 4540554
Abstract: The invention is a method for removing sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides and particulate from the products of combusted carbonaceous fuels. Sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides and particulate are currently discharged to the atmosphere as flue gas in quantities highly detrimental to the environment. Potassium compounds, as are found in agricultural grade potash, are dispersed throughout the combustion products at the exit of the combustion zone of boilers. The potassium compounds decompose as a result of combustion temperatures in excess of their melting points. The potassium, as an ionic vapor, reacts with the sulfur and nitrogen oxide gases present, to form potassium sulfates, potassium nitrites and potassium nitrates. When the combined products stream, tranversing the boiler equipment train, cool sufficiently, the potassium, present in excess, condenses as potassium oxide on the surfaces of the particles present.

  • Patent number: 4534549
Abstract: Apparatus for automatically stacking battery plates and separators is disclosed. Battery plates and separators elements are alternately and automatically combined on a conveyor belt to form sandwiches wherein a plurality of such sandwiches are later assembled for use in battery cells. Prior to combining the elements, the plates and separators are arranged in respective chutes for access by pivotably mounted vacuum pickup heads, which cycle between the chutes and the conveyor belt. The vacuum pickup heads capture the topmost elements in the chutes irrespective of the height at which the plates and separators may be stacked therein. In order to access the elements within the chutes, a jet sensor is provided with the pickup head that acts as a proximity detector. When vacuum in not being uitlized for pickup purposes, it is uitlized in an environmental mode where it is used to remove lead dust and particles around the stacking area.

  • Patent number: 4524509
Abstract: A dip method of enveloping a battery plate with a microporous battery separator material. The method involves a first removing air bubbles from the plate by dipping the plate in a liquid, then dipping the plate into a polymer-solvent-filler suspension. After removal from the polymer-solvent-filler suspension, the plate is dried by evaporation or contacted with a nonsolvent and then dried. The result is the formation of a microporous separator envelope about the battery plate.

  • Patent number: 4521307
Abstract: A barriered pump/aerator, for continuously moving and aerating mixed liquor having translational-flow momentum within an endless channel of a barrier oxidation ditch, conserves at least a portion of the momentum by enabling induced flow of the mixed liquor past the barrier. In one embodiment, the induced flow passes through a discharge slot which contains a plurality of jet aerators. In another embodiment, the induced flow passes through a trough formed in the bottom of the endless channel past an inclined baffle. In a third embodiment, the induced flow passes through a tubular passage having a plurality of jet aerators disposed therein.

  • Patent number: 4517262
Abstract: A vent cap for enclosing filler openings of a storage battery comprises a base terminating at a rim including a generally U-shaped channel and a cover, the periphery of which engages the channel of the base. The periphery of the cover is provided with an essentially planar face having a chamfered termination and a plurality of circumferentially spaced, secant-shaped portions formed therein. The inner and outer faces of the cover are provided with reliefed portions adjacent to the secant-shaped portions formed in the cover's periphery. The secant-shaped portions formed in the periphery of the cover and the reliefed portions formed in the inner and outer faces of the cover cooperate with the U-shaped channel to develop a series of apertures between the base and cover.

  • Patent number: 4512895
Abstract: An integral clarifier is provided that operates without a pump by deriving the clarifier feed stream and its accompanying pump head from the flow being pumped through the draft tube of a draft tube circulator/aerator assembly in a complete mix system or in a basin oxidation ditch. The clarifier feed stream is delivered to the clarifier with this pump head substantially intact to create a differential hydraulic head between the surface of the clarified liquor within the clarifier and the surface of the mixed liquor within the complete mix tank or within the endless channel of the barrier oxidation ditch. The clarifier may be located in any suitable place but is preferably alongside the complete mix tank or alongside the discharge channel of the barrier oxidation ditch, within the discharge channel so that its upstream side forms the barrier, or surrounded by the endless channel, particularly if the clarifier and the ditch are circular in shape.
