  • Patent number: 7699157
Abstract: A safety arrangement for use with a piece of equipment. The safety arrangement includes a signal generating unit for generating an optical signal, an elongate element, and a signal detecting unit. The elongate element is disposed along, about, around or through the piece of equipment and is capable of transmitting an optical signal. The signal detecting unit detects an optical signal. The signal generating unit is connected to the signal detecting unit by the elongate element such that the signal detecting unit is in optical communication with the signal detecting unit. The signal detecting unit is arranged to detect a change in the optical signal transmitted by the elongate element as a consequence of movement of the elongate element and, upon detection of the change in the signal, the detecting unit is configured to effect a change in the operation of the piece of equipment.

  • Patent number: 7660920
Abstract: An industrial controller may communicate with a number of input/output (I/O) modules using an optimized connection packet assembled by a scanner communicating directly with the I/O modules and forwarding the optimized connection packet to the industrial processor. The optimized connection packet is communicated over a connection as part of a connected messaging system used to ensure highly reliable network communication. The need for higher data rates for some I/O modules as part of the optimized connection packet may be accommodated through the opening of a second redundant connection that provides the high-data-rate data in an interleaving fashion with the optimized connection packet, without upsetting the optimized connection packet or changing the use of the data by the industrial control program.

  • Patent number: 7649332
Abstract: A motor control system uses an incremental encoder that provides a signal indicative of motor position. If an illegal state change is detected in the same sampling interval, an error event is recorded and an error counter is incremented. When the number of counts exceeds a pre-determined threshold, the motor is disabled so that appropriate corrective action can be taken.

  • Patent number: 7649912
Abstract: A method and circuit for precisely synchronizing clocks in separate nodes on a communication network is provided by adjusting timestamps and related data in network messages. The circuit will allow a daisy-chain connection of the nodes and will forward time synchronization frames while accounting for delays in a manner that does not use boundary clocks, but does not depart from the IEEE 1588 standard protocol. The delays will be added on the fly to synchronization packets and the IP checksum and frame CRC will be adjusted. Deterministic data delivery and redundant data paths are also provided in a full duplex Ethernet network.

  • Patent number: 7617412
Abstract: A dual-processing unit with single clock source CPUs safety I/O module having a safety timer crosscheck diagnostic to enable each CPU to verify the accuracy of the clock source of the other CPU. The diagnostic works by having the first CPU act as a controlling CPU and the second CPU act as a monitoring CPU. Both CPUs are synchronized to begin one cycle of their respective safety functions at the same time. As part of the diagnostic, the controlling CPU is set to be interrupted after a pre-determined time period while the monitoring CPU is set to be interrupted slightly after that. When the controlling CPU is interrupted after the pre-determined time has passed as determined by that CPU's clock source, it sends a signal to the monitoring CPU which then verifies that the perceived time is within an expected range. To verify that the clock source of the monitoring CPU is accurate, the first CPU swaps roles to become the monitoring CPU while the second CPU becomes the controlling CPU.

  • Patent number: 7596635
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for redundancy in machine or process control systems provide redundant communication adapters located with the groups of I/O modules, so that if the first communication adapter faults or becomes unavailable, a second communication adapter will perform all of the necessary functions of the first adapter. The adapters are connected to a multiplexing module for communicating input data from the I/O modules to the communication adapters, for exchanging initialization data with the first communication adapter and the second communication adapter to initialize the redundant mode of operation and for monitoring communication of the first communication adapter and the second communication adapter on the network to start up the second adapter as the primary adapter for communicating both input data and output data with the I/O modules.

  • Patent number: 7593784
Abstract: A machine condition assessment module may be integrated with standard industrial control and communications networks to receive dynamic operating data from signal processing engines and optionally process data from controlled machinery and to operate on that data according to standard and user customized rule sets to produce an assessment of the presence and severity of specific electrical and/or mechanical faults. The output of the assessment module will be, for each of the one or more machines monitored, and for each of the one or more faults assessed, a single parameter that indicates the presence and severity of the fault. This data, in turn, may be readily communicated to an industrial controller on the network for use in effecting the control process itself.

  • Patent number: 7551050
Abstract: A contactor assembly includes a stationary contact, an arc contact, an arc arrestor, and a magnetic intensifier. The magnetic intensifier is constructed to be secured in generally close proximity to the stationary contact. During communication of power through the contactor assembly, the magnetic intensifier accentuates a magnetic field associated with the stationary contact and increases the magnitude of a magnetic force directed to the arc arrestor. A pair of arc guides extend along the magnetic intensifier and, cooperatively with the magnetic force, ensure efficient, repeatable, and expedient transfer of a circuit termination arc to the arc arrestor. Such a construction increases the operable range and lifecycle of the contactor by reducing the damage associated with propagation of the circuit termination arc.
