  • Patent number: 7746969
Abstract: A receiver for a multi-channel system such as a HDMI system is presented. In accordance with the present invention, the receiver receives one of the plurality of channels and includes an analog portion, a digital-to-analog converter, and a digital control block that provides digital control signals to the analog portion. Equalization can be accomplished partially or wholly in the analog domain and digitally controlled by a digital control loop. A digital equalizer can also be included. A decision feedback equalizer can be implemented that sums an analog output signal into the analog data stream. Timing recovery can be accomplished by digital control of a phase interpolator or delay locked loop that receives a plurality of phases from a timing circuit coupled to receive a clock signal.

  • Patent number: 7738355
Abstract: In a communication network, a sending node transmits a message with a multisegment preamble and data to a receiving node. The receiving node calculates characteristics of the sending unit, channel, or transmitted signal by processing preamble segments. Once an unknown characteristic is determined, a segment of the preamble can be eliminated or reduced in length for subsequent messages, which increases efficiency of the message transmissions.

  • Patent number: 7724639
Abstract: In an orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) communication system, data bits are assigned to several carriers to create frequency redundancy in the transmitted waveform. Uniformly spaced carriers occupy the frequency band of the OFDM signal. Multipath nulls caused by reflections of the transmitted signal can occur at periodic frequency intervals, for example in a coaxial cable. A non-periodic pattern of bit allocation to carriers creates frequency diversity that is resistant to periodic multipath nulls existing in the communication channel.

  • Patent number: 7714760
Abstract: Methods and apparatuses are provided for performing direct quadrature sampling. One method for sampling quadrature baseband components of a bandpass signal includes receiving a bandpass signal, sampling the bandpass signal using a first sampling clock and a second sampling clock, where the first and the second sampling clocks have the same frequency and are offset by a predetermined phase, and aligning the sampled signals temporally to produce in-phase and quadrature samples corresponding to baseband in-phase and quadrature components. An apparatus for directly sampling baseband quadrature components of a bandpass signal is also presented, which includes a first analog-to-digital converter (ADC) configured to receive a bandpass signal, a second ADC configured to receive the bandpass signal, where the second ADC has a clock having a phase offset with respect to clock signal of the first ADC, and an interpolator coupled to the first ADC configured provide coincident samples.

  • Patent number: 7694041
Abstract: Method and system for managing a buffers pool. The system may include a first processor coupled to a general memory having allocation ring and de-allocation ring portions; and a second processor to perform internal accounting of pointer(s) buffer(s). The second processor has an internal storage array logically divided into first and second storage spaces. The second processor releases temporarily un-required buffer(s) pointer(s) to the first storage space, or to the second storage space if the first storage space is full. The second processor utilizes allocated buffer(s) pointer(s) accumulated in the first storage space. The second processor is to cause a DMA engine to move a bulk of two or more buffer(s) pointer(s) from the allocation ring to the first storage space, and to move a bulk of two or more buffer(s) pointer(s) from the second storage space to the de-allocation ring.

  • Patent number: 7660588
Abstract: A method and apparatus to utilize a set of measurements (either partial or compete) to improve the accuracy of an initial position estimate for a wireless terminal. The initial position estimate for the terminal is first obtained (e.g., based on a cell-ID or an enhanced cell-ID solution). Measurements are obtained for the terminal. The initial position estimate is then updated with the measurements to obtain a revised position estimate for the terminal. The updating may be performed by (1) deriving a measurement vector based on the initial position estimate and the measurements, (2) forming an observation matrix for the measurements, (3) determining a matrix of weights, (4) deriving a correction vector based on the measurement vector, the observation matrix, and the weight matrix, and (5) updating the initial position estimate with the correction vector.

  • Patent number: 7647055
Abstract: A wireless communication device, known as a mobile station (MS), contains a conventional wireless communication system and further comprises a wireless computer network communication subsystem and may also include GPS capability. The operator of the MS may utilize any or all of these subsystems to determine the current position of the MS. Based on the current position of the MS, location-based services are provided to the MS as sales information, schedules, prices, maps, and the like. In a typical implementation a plurality of computer network access points, or beacons, are distributed throughout a geographic region and used to determine the position of the MS with a reasonably high degree of accuracy. Based on the current position of the MS, the beacons can provide location-based services.

  • Patent number: 7580672
Abstract: A communication repeater for use in conjunction with a base transceiver subsystem (BTS) of a wireless communication system. The repeater expands the coverage area of the BTS and allows receivers to identify whether the source of a communication signal was directly from a BTS or was broadcast by a repeater. Identification of the signal source facilitates position determination, particularly in hybrid position determination systems. The repeater implements differential delay modulation of the transmitted signal. The repeater re-transmits the original BTS signal as well as a time delayed version of the signal. Additionally, the repeater introduces synthetic path diversity in the form of spatial diversity or polarity diversity to de-correlate the re-transmitted original signal from the time delayed signal. The repeater can broadcast the delayed signal with the same power as the re-transmitted original signal or can attenuate the delayed signal relative to the re-transmitted original signal.

  • Patent number: 7421277
Abstract: For a call flow to perform position determination, a network (100) sends to a user equipment (UE) (120) an indication (e.g., a request for permission) to perform a position fix for the UE (120). The UE (120) responds by sending to the network an acknowledgment (e.g., a grant of permission) to perform the position fix. The UE (120) selectively sends a position estimate for itself to the network (100), typically along with the acknowledgment. The network (100) may initiate location processing if (1) a position estimate is not received from the UE (120) or (2) a position estimate is received from the UE (120) but the network (100) decides not to use this position estimate. In this case, the network (100) and the UE (120) perform location processing to obtain a position fix for the UE (120). However, if a position estimate is received from the UE (120) and the network (100) decides to use the position estimate, then the location processing is bypassed or short circuited.

  • Patent number: 7289786
Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing emergency notification by a wireless mobile device in response to triggering a sensor that is remote from the mobile device. A detection system, which may be located within a vehicle, comprises one or more sensors configured to sense an emergency event and transmit a message via a wireless link regarding the emergency event. A wireless mobile device within short range of the transmitter receives the message via a short range receiver located therein and processes the message regarding the triggering of the sensor. For example, the wireless mobile device may be programmed to determine position information about the wireless transmitter and/or mobile device, call a predetermined emergency number such as E911, and transmit data including position and other information from the mobile device to the emergency number in response to the received message.

  • Patent number: 6707422
Abstract: A method and apparatus is disclosed for measurement processing of Satellite Positioning System (SPS) signals. A plurality of SPS signals from a corresponding plurality of SPS satellites are received in an SPS receiver. The signal environment corresponding to the location in which the SPS receiver is located is characterized to produce signal environment data. In one exemplary embodiment, an information source, such as a cellular network based database, is searched to retrieve the signal environment data given an approximate location of the GPS receiver. This approximate location may be specified by a location of a cell site which is in cellular radio communication with a cellular communication device which is co-located with the GPS receiver. One or more parameters related to signal characteristics of the satellite signals are defined. Threshold values for the parameters are determined using the signal environment data.
