  • Patent number: 7085859
Abstract: A method, apparatus and program storage device for automatically presenting status from a host bus adapter until an error is detected is provided. Data is transmitted between the host bus adapter and a host. The host performs data transmission validation and determines whether data transmission was successful. The host bus adapter automatically sends status information when data transmission was successful, else the host bus adapter waits for status type identification from the host for transmission of data.

  • Patent number: 7057864
Abstract: A method for making a tunnel valve head with a flux guide, a tunnel valve sensor having an isolated flux guide, and a magnetic storage system using a tunnel valve sensor having an isolated flux guide is disclosed. The tunnel valve sensors is created by forming a tunnel valve at a first shield layer, the tunnel valve comprising a free layer distal to the first shield layer, depositing a first insulation layer over the first shield layer and around the tunnel valve, depositing a flux guide over the first insulation layer and coupling to the tunnel valve at the free layer, covering the flux guide with a second insulation layer and forming a second shield layer over the second insulation, wherein the flux guide and the free layer are physically isolated by the first and second insulation layers to prevent current shunts therefrom. The structure achieves physical connection between the flux guide and the free layer and insulates the flux guide from the shields.

  • Patent number: 7038889
Abstract: A dual spin valve giant magnetoresistance (GMR) sensor having two spin valves with the second spin valve being self-biased is disclosed herein. According to the present invention a dual spin valve system is disclosed wherein the first of the two spin valves in the dual spin valve element is pinned through exchange coupling, i.e., a first anti-ferromagnetic pinning layer and a first ferromagnetic pinned layer structure are exchange coupled for pinning the first magnetic moment of the first ferromagnetic pinned layer structure in a first direction. The second of the two spin valves in the dual spin valve system is self-pinned. The self-pinned spin valve does not use any anti-ferromagnetic layers to pin the magnetization of the pinned layers.

  • Patent number: 7038891
Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing precise control of magnetic coupling field in NiMn top spin valve heads and amplitude enhancement is disclosed. The magnetic coupling between free and pinned layers in NiMn top spin valve heads is precisely controlled by employing the surface oxidation of Cu seed layer or/and Cu spacer layer that improve both the interfacial quality and the crystalline texture. According to the present invention the magnitude of coupling field can be precisely controlled without affecting resistance, and the amplitude of giant magneto-resistive(GMR) heads is improved by 15% at the same coupling field without affecting asymmetry performance. Thus, the present invention improves not only the interfacial roughness, but also improves the magnetic layer texture. The oxidation of Cu seed layer in the NiMn top spin valve structure provides more robust process with good control in coupling field that affects asymmetry of a GMR head.

  • Patent number: 7035979
Abstract: A method and apparatus for increasing the performance of a computing system and increasing the hit ratio in at least one non-L1 cache. A caching assistant and a processor are embedded in a processing system. The caching assistant analyzes system activity, monitors and coordinates data requests from the processor, processors and other data accessing devices, and monitors and analyzes data accesses throughout the cache hierarchy. The caching assistant is provided with a dedicated cache for storing fetched and prefetched data. The caching assistant improves the performance of the computing system by anticipating which data is likely to be requested for processing next, accessing and storing that data in an appropriate non-L1 cache prior to the data being requested by processors or data accessing devices. A method for increasing the processor performance includes analyzing system activity and optimizing a hit ratio in at least one non-L1 cache.

  • Patent number: 7027243
Abstract: An apparatus for providing head amplitude characterization is disclosed. A DAC is used to apply known signals to a variable gain amplifier in the front end of a read channel. The signal is processed through the read channel and at the output of an ADC, the signal is read and used to determine the input channel amplitude. Knowing the amplitude of the two input signals, the ADC code spread and the two VGA gain codes, an equation is generated for determining the amplitude of a head.

  • Patent number: 7027263
Abstract: A slider having leading and trailing edges is configured to fly on an airbearing above a data storage disk rotating from the leading edge to the trailing edge. Read and write heads are mounted on the slider proximate the trailing edge. An auxiliary thermal sensor is mounted on the slider, but preferably nearer the leading edge. Forward placement of the sensor allows it to sense mechanical defects before they reach the heads, thereby permitting a write inhibit operation, for example. The sensor may also be used to detect airbearing modulation. Appropriate action may be taken when unacceptable airbearing modulation is detected, such as notifying the user and/or scrubbing the slider. The sensor is preferably wider than the heads. This allows, for example, an in-situ glide test to be performed faster using the sensor. An arm electronics module is preferably configured to permit concurrent operation of the sensor and heads.

  • Patent number: 7027245
Abstract: An apparatus for providing head amplitude characterization using gain loops is disclosed. A variable gain amplifier (VGA) receiving input signals and generates a VGA output signal. A digital-to-analog converter (DAC) circuit provides a desired input signal to the VGA and a gain control loop drives the VGA to gain lock the VGA to the provided desired input signal. An analog-to-digital converter (ADC) provides a digital output representing an ADC code spread in response to the VGA output. A controller drives the DAC to provide the desired input signal to the VGA and generates control signals for controlling the ADC, the controller further determines read head channel amplitude based upon the signal provided to the DAC, the ADC code spread received from the ADC and gain code provided by the gain control loops.

  • Patent number: 7022248
Abstract: A method for patterning a self-aligned coil using a damascene process is disclosed. Coil pockets are formed in a first insulation layer disposed over a first pole layer. A barrier/seed layer is deposited along walls of the coil pockets in the insulation layer. Copper is formed in the coil pockets and over the insulation layer. The copper is planarized down to the insulation layer. The self-aligned coil process packs more copper into the same coil pocket and relaxes the coil alignment tolerance. Protrusions are prevented because of the more efficient and uniform spacing of the coil to reduce heat buildup in the head during a write.

  • Patent number: 7007054
Abstract: Faster discrete cosine transforms that use scaled terms are disclosed. Prior to application of a transform, equations are arranged into collections. Each collection is scaled by dividing each of the discrete cosine transform constants in the collection by one of the discrete cosine transform constants from the collection. Each of the scaled discrete cosine transform constants are then represented with approximated sums of powers-of-2. During the execution phase the block of input data is obtained. A series of predetermined sums and shifts is performed on the data. The output results are saved.
