  • Patent number: 4949975
Abstract: Whitewater board game. A game board has indicated on it successive paths of preparation for, and travel to, one or more rivers, each river having rapids therein, and each rapids having alternative routes therethrough--and some having portages around them. Route cards for the respective rapids indicate outcomes of running the rapids, including possible mishaps, dependent in part upon water level and type of boat and in part upon chance.

  • Patent number: 4931895
Abstract: An adapter to be plugged in between a conventional watt-hour meter and an electrical power use installation socket to protect both the meter and downstream equipment from possible damage by transient surges in electrical potential resulting from lightning or similar disturbance. For the usual meter having a pair of power input terminals and a pair of power output terminals, this adapter has a pair of varistors or similar non-linear resistances connected between the respective input terminals and ground, so as to conduct away such surges. It also preferably has a heat sink connected to the grounded side of the varistors to dissipate the thermal energy resulting from the surge conduction. Additional features include an indicator of operating condition and fuse links to the varistors.

  • Patent number: 4919916
Abstract: Treatment of the abuse of those addictive drugs whose apparent mode of operation includes first an enhancement of neurotransmitter activity and subsequently a reduction in that activity--and in accompanying pleasurable sensations--to such an extent that abusers thereof feel compelled to repeat the experience. Examples of abused drugs for which treatment is suitable are amphetamines, cocaine, meperidine, phencyclidine, and new "designer" drugs. The treatment is by daily dosage of phenelzine or equivalent phenylalkylhydrazine so as to effect a degree of monoamine oxidase inhibition incompatible with the abused drug during the period of treatment and for at least a couple weeks thereafter. Concurrent usage is productive of a broad range of dangerous and frightening reactions, described in graphic detail to all patients undergoing such treatment, and any breach of the prohibition confirms the necessity of remaining free of the abused drug throughout.

  • Patent number: 4915059
Abstract: Fish are cultured in one or more flumelike watercourses or "raceways" bounded by raceway-defining means. The water flow rate is such that the fish swim substantially continuously to maintain position. The fish are configured too closely to assert territorial rights, as they do when held at lower concentration. Water enters via a well enclosure at the upstream end, as by airlift upwelling; flows through the watercourse, sweeping waste materials along; and departs via a weir-like enclosure at the downstream end, where dissolved or undissolved waste is removed. Water is preferably supplied from and returned to a surrounding natural or man-made body of water, which also preferably floats the physical raceway means, facilitating water depth adjustment. Distribution of fish to adjacent raceways without any netting or handling conducive to injury is accomplished via airlift means. Fish so cultured remain healthy and grow rapidly and uniformly.

  • Patent number: 4913432
Abstract: A competitive game toy for one or more players, dependent on personal reaction time and hand-eye coordination. Players manually trigger the driving of movable indicator arms along a path having successive intervals marked with award indicia of any desired game or sport, and also manually halt the indicator therealong. In a variant players manually trigger successive actuation of electrical indicator lights along such a path having intervals lighted thereby in accordance with movement of an electrical contactor therealong. The intervals are marked with award indicia of any desired game or sport, and may be point scores or instructions to add or delete turns or for simulated playing of a game or sport, such as baseball. The players striving to be awarded a high score or good play, try to stop at or light up path intervals bearing favorable indicia.

  • Patent number: 4907119
Abstract: Electrical transient surge protection of electrical equipment downstream from a power source plus safeguarding of apparatus for providing such surge protection against failure at high currents or high temperature. Current-limiting and temperature-limiting fusible devices are used in conjunction with voltage-limiting devices, such as varistors, so as to protect watt-hour meters and downstream loads from electrical surges, and to safeguard such varistors from failure. Such apparatus may be located in such diverse places as a power line weatherhead, a watt-hour meter base, an adapter between a meter base and its normal mounting socket, or a circuit-breaker panel downstream of the meter and upstream of electrical loads metered thereby. The varistors are stacked in parallel circuit assemblies for heavy duty. Visible indicators of failure of the surge-protection are provided.

  • Patent number: 4903364
Abstract: Cleaning underlying surfaces, especially irregular surfaces, such as shake roofs, grooved pavements or ramps, and the like. Mobile apparatus under the guidance of an operator brushes the underlying surface and sprays water or other cleaning liquid onto it in a rotating pattern as the operator traverses the apparatus and, thus, the cleaning locus relative to the supporting surface. A "compass point" wheel arrangement enables the apparatus to be positioned with one wheel off the edge of the supporting surface to clean over the edge while maintaining three-point stability, whereas temporary removal of a wheel enables close approach to clean an intersection of the underlying supporting surface and an adjoining wall or other adjacent upright surface.

  • Patent number: 4849685
Abstract: Measurement of electromagnetic interference (EMI), especially conducted emissions from electrical equipment under test (EUT) to transmission lines powering the EUT; and then limiting such EMI. Differential mode (as distinguished from common mode) EMI conducted emissions are excluded temporarily from measurement by interposing a differential mode rejection network (DMRN) between the EUT and an EMI-sensitive receiver, and such common mode EMI is measured. A filter against such common mode conducted emissions is designed and is interposed between the EUT and the EMI receiver, and such differential mode EMI is then measured--with the DMRN removed. A filter against the differential mode conductive emissions is also designed and interposed between the EUT and the receiver, and the total conducted emissions are rechecked. The respective filters are combined into a composite filter for the EUT to prevent such EMI conductive emissions from entering power transmission lines.

  • Patent number: 4823115
Abstract: Detection of lightning, storms, or the like via detecting means connected between an external antenna and ground, plus alerting means operatively connected to the detection means. An unpowered cascaded emitter-follower arrangement of at least a Darlington pair triggers a powered alerting circuit via an intervening gate opened when a fluctuation in ambient electric field causes the first transistor in such pair to conduct. A meter indicates such conduction even if the alerting means is not switched on, and alerting indicators in the alerting means may be tested in the absence of any detected field fluctuation.

  • Patent number: 4783118
Abstract: Article of children's furniture useful as a rocker in a first orientation and useful as a high-chair or as a desk when inverted. In both such orientations of the article, a child using it has a seat, a back-rest, a foot-rest, and a ledge conveniently located above and ahead of the seat. In the inverted orientation a tray, readily detachable by an adult but not by a child, is attachable above the ledge as a location for food or for toys or for use as a writing surface. Casters, attachable to the article when in the rocker orientation, facilitate movement of the article when in the inverted position--but not by a child seated therein, who is too short to reach the floor--and double as toys in the rocker orientation. This article of furniture is stable in both its rocking and inverted orientations, and supports a child securely.
