  • Patent number: 5519266
Abstract: A linear motor has coil assemblies driven by multiple phases mounted side by side on a base plate such that they do not overlap. The coil assemblies include conductors wound upon teeth such that voids in the coil assemblies are minimized along with path lengths and thermal resistances between windings and the base plate, thus maximizing heat dissipation and the power capacity of the motor. The linear motor may have coil assemblies with teeth composed of a first material having desirable magnetic properties and a base plate composed of an inexpensive second material minimizing costs of materials. The teeth may be of varying lengths in or to further minimize voids. The coil assemblies are compactly mounted with a longitudinal axis normal to an axis of movement. Permanent magnets are mounted upon a back iron plate with axis of symmetry normal to the axis of movement.

  • Patent number: 5509748
Abstract: A ball joint compensates for manufacturing tolerances of the components and functions smoothly under large compressive loads. A rigid and resilient bearing seat has an elastic restoring force that compensates for component tolerances under varying load conditions. A ball joint housing and fitted bearing seat permit incremental increases in the load bearing area within the ball joint as an operating load increases. The increase in load bearing area permits the ball joint to withstand larger loads than in conventional ball joints without permanent deformation of the bearing seat. The ball joint is more durable and operates more smoothly over a wider range of loads than conventional ball joints.

  • Patent number: 5508703
Abstract: A membrane switch having a rotary motion detection function comprises a flexible sheet, in which movable electrodes are formed that correspond to multiple keys, and a printed wiring board, in which fixed electrodes are formed that correspond to the movable electrodes. The flexible sheet and printed wiring board are arranged in layers so that the movable and fixed electrodes face each other with a prescribed spacing between them. When any key on the membrane switch is pressed and thus turned on, that key's signal is detected. When multiple keys are turned on in succession within a prescribed time interval, codes are sent that correspond to the direction and speed of movement of the sequence of turned-on keys. The rotary motion keys are arranged in a circle. The codes that correspond to the direction and speed of shift of the turned-on keys are preset in a microprocessor. The rotary motion keys can be arranged on the same board with other general keys to make up a remote control device.

  • Patent number: 5503686
Abstract: A magnetic recording head that includes a combined IN element and an MR element is heat treated under two types of magnetic fields. A rotating magnetic field, having a first magnetic field intensity, is applied for a time while the magnetic recording head is at an elevated temperature. Then, part-way during cooling of the magnetic head, the rotating magnetic field is replaced by a direct (non-rotating) magnetic field having a second magnetic field intensity. The second magnetic field intensity is lower than the first magnetic field intensity, whereby the properties of both the IN element and the MR element are maintained at high values.

  • Patent number: 5495880
Abstract: Multiple tires are mounted adjacently parallel to each other on a single wheel. Respective inner spaces of the multiple tires communicate with each other by way of an airflow pipe for the transfer of air. The airflow pipe includes a pneumatic pressure control valve that opens or closes in response to air leaking from one or more of the multiple tires. When one of the multiple tires leaks air rapidly, the pneumatic pressure of the other normal tire decreases, thereby forcing the driver to notice the puncture. If one tire leaks air slowly, its air is replenished from another tire. Thus the respective pneumatic pressures of the individual tires become equal, whereby the driver can continue to drive for a time without risking the serious accident that could occur if he were unaware of the leak.

  • Patent number: 5473397
Abstract: A camera with a data imprinting device has a plurality of in-line LEDs producing light focused by an optical system upon a photographic film at a first and a second position, corresponding to a full size format and a panorama size format, respectively. The focused light imprints data images upon the film at the first position are larger than data images imprinted at the second position. The optical system has first and second prisms, with integrated lenses, for reflecting and focusing the light upon the film at the first and second positions, respectively. A shutter plate is selectively positioned over apertures through which the light is focused, thus blocking the light and allowing only a selected imprint to be made upon the film. A vertical pattern of the data image is created by a controller selectively illuminating the in-line LEDs while a horizontal pattern is produced by the controller illuminating the LEDs in coordination with the movement of the film past the apertures.

  • Patent number: 5453941
Abstract: A data input resistance pad for measuring coordinates and pressure of a stylus pressed on the pad has X and Y-coordinate resistance boards. The X and Y-coordinate resistance boards are connectable by respective switches to high and low voltage sources at opposite ends of each board. By measuring the voltage at either side of a contact resistance with a high impedance voltage measuring device, a voltage drop across the contact resistance is calculated. This voltage drop represents the contact resistance and therefore the pressure of the stylus. The X position is calculated by measuring the voltage drop from an end of the X-coordinate resistance board to the point of contact. The Y position is calculated by measuring the voltage drop from an end of the Y-coordinate resistance board to the point of contact.
