  • Patent number: 4584458
Abstract: A welding wire feeder system for an electric arc welder in which the wire feed motor M is powered from a pulse width modulated power supply comprising a power transistor Q10 controlled by a pulse signal on line 31 from a pulse width modulator comprising an integrated circuit A3. A control voltage proportional to the arc voltage and a feedback voltage indicative of the feed motor speed are generated and applied to respective inputs of a high gain amplifier A4-1 whose output error signal is either high or low dependent upon the relative values of the control and feedback signals. Control is effected in such a manner that an increase in welding arc voltage causes a corresponding increase in the welding wire feed rate, and vice versa.

  • Patent number: 4578801
Abstract: A radiographic apparatus contains at least one source and at least one detector bank mounted on respective concentric annular rings; the patient's body being disposed inside the smaller ring. The rings are rotated in opposite directions and at such respective angular velocities that the effect of a lateral sweep of the detectors and source across the body is achieved with purely rotational movements. Advantageously, one ring carries two sources disposed diametrically opposite one another and the other ring carries three banks of detectors distributed equi-angularly therearound.

  • Patent number: 4576651
Abstract: A process for treating fluoride-contaminated scrap lining material from electrolytic reduction cells comprises mixing the material with 7-30 parts of sulphuric acid and sufficient water to bring liquid content to 60-80 parts per 100 parts of lining material, mixing in sufficient lime to at least neutralize the sulphuric acid and make the slurry slightly alkaline, the slurry then being allowed to set into a solid mass. The slurry should be of a paste-like consistency. The lime may be wholly calcium hydroxide, but a substantial proportion may be in the form of calcium carbonate. The scrap, before or after the above treatment with lime and sulphuric acid, is preferably heated to 150.degree.-500.degree. C. in the presence of water vapor to destroy cyanides.

  • Patent number: 4571258
Abstract: In a process for recovery of aluminium metal from coated light gauge aluminium scrap the scrap fragments are first decoated and then fed substantially continuously onto the surface of a body of molten metal above a channel-type induction heater. The molten metal is stirred to produce strong down flows at the molten metal surface to submerge the decoated scrap particles. The submergence may be effected by a coreless induction heater acting on the body of molten metal or other electromagnetic device such as one or more linear induction motors which are employed to set up a strong axial down flow at the center of the metal surface or to generate a vortex at that location.

  • Patent number: 4568829
Abstract: Disclosed are a method and a system for well logging in which gamma radiation detected in five energy windows is converted into logs of formation thorium, uranium and potassium (Th,U,K), and of borehole barite and potassium chloride (KCl), in a process which makes use of an adaptive filter which accounts for changes in the detected gamma radiation with borehole depth, for the nature of the logging process, and for the composition of the borehole fluid. In a first, simpler embodiment, the filter is based on changes with borehole depth in the total amount of detected gamma radiation in the vicinity of the depth level of interest. In a second, more exacting embodiment, the filter is based on both the vertical variations in the Th,U,K concentrations, and the statistical variations in the measurements. In both embodiments a log of Th,U,K is produced.

  • Patent number: 4568949
Abstract: A thermal transfer printer including a printhead having a plurality of individually energizable thermal elements arranged in a primary scanning direction, wherein a carrier sheet bearing a plurality of different color record-forming materials arranged on discrete surface portions located in end-to-end relation in a subsidiary scanning direction and a record medium are pressed together and moved across the printhead in the subsidiary scanning direction in timed relation. The thermal elements are selectively energized to transfer spots of one color record-forming material after another from the carrier sheet to the record medium by repeatedly performing a thermal transfer printing operation. A heating roller and a pressing roller are brought into contact with the record medium after spots of one color record-forming material are transferred, to remove irregularities from the surface of the record medium before transferring thereto spots of another color.

  • Patent number: 4560449
Abstract: Electrolytic cells for production of Mg or other metal lighter than the molten electrolyte comprise electrode assemblies of anode 28, cathode 26 and intermediate bipolar electrodes 30 with substantially vertical regions 39 between them. The intermediate bipolar electrodes have open-top channels 50 along their top edges. An electrolyte/metal mixture rising from the interelectrode regions by gas lift is transported along these channels, substantially undisturbed by rising gas, to a weir 20 and then to a metal collection chamber 18. The electrolyte surface is kept at a constant level, preferably by means of a vessel 22 submerged in electrolyte in the metal collection chamber, to or from which molten electrolyte can be transferred to alter the surface level.
