  • Patent number: 4500262
Abstract: The present invention relates to a reciprocating pump in which a plunger is reciprocated by means of a crankshaft, a connecting rod and a crosshead. The reciprocating pump further includes cushioning means which is disposed between the crosshead and the plunger and capable of adjusting its cushioning force and absorbing the plunger stroke, whereby the delivery pressure is adjustable through adjustment of the cushioning force of the cushioning means and the delivery volume or rate is also adjustable through absorption of the plunger stroke by the cushioning means.

  • Patent number: 4499123
Abstract: A two-step process for coating a surface of an aluminum article with zinc, wherein the surface is initially exposed to a zincate bath under relatively weak zinc-depositing conditions, and then further exposed to a zincate bath under stronger zinc-depositing conditions (lower ZnO concentration and/or higher temperature), to establish thereon an adherent coating of metallic zinc. The coated article may be heated to effect diffusion of the zinc into the aluminum for producing a zinc-enriched region adjacent the surface to protect the surface against corrosion.

  • Patent number: 4495001
Abstract: In the thermal ageing of extruded sections of age-hardenable aluminum alloys the sections are progressed through a system having an initial low temperature zone and a subsequent high temperature zone. In order to secure uniform ageing the sections are progressed in a direction transverse to their length and conveniently are arranged in a single layer and spaced apart to ensure acceptably uniform rate of heating to ageing temperature.

  • Patent number: 4495047
Abstract: In an electrolytic reduction cell for the production of a molten metal by electrolysis of a molten electrolyte, the product metal collects on a cathodic carbon floor having embedded steel current collector bars for leading out the cathodic current. In order to reduce the wave motion of the metal due to interaction of horizontal currents in the product metal with the magnetic fields due to currents in conductors associated with the cell, electrically non-conductive barrier members are arranged on the floor of the cell transversely of horizontal currents in the product metal. Such barrier members have at least a surface layer of material resistant to product metal and extend upwardly from the cell floor to a height approximating to the normal maximum operating level of product metal.

  • Patent number: 4493327
Abstract: Disclosed are a method and a system for determining if a patient's brain electrical activity reflects a significant evoked response to a sensory stimulus. A test measure of the difference between two sets of averaged waveforms, one in the absence and another in the presence of the stimulus, is derived on the basis of (i) mean values of spectral measures of the two sets and (ii) the variance of these spectral measures. This test measure is matched against acceptance and rejection levels which are defined on the basis of both (i) the number of averaged waveforms in each set and (ii) the desired degree of probability of avoiding false positive or false negative results.

  • Patent number: 4486836
Abstract: Disclosed is a method of improving well logs, such as induction logs and LATEROLOGS, by taking into account the effect on a log measurement both of the particular bed in which it is taken and of one or more other beds. In one example the process starts with an original induction log and a provisional layered formation which is based thereon and is characterized by bed boundaries and constant induction log levels within a bed. A provisional reconstructed log is built up by applying the tool response to the layered formation by a new technique which makes this expedient enough to be practicable. The reconstructed log is matched against the original log, and the layered formation is refined accordingly, by adding and/or shifting boundaries and/or by changing the measurement levels within beds, until the match is satisfactory. The original log is then converted to an improved log on the basis of the latest layered formation.

  • Patent number: 4483770
Abstract: An aircushion and fluid film bearing arrangement particularly suitable for supporting the undersurfaces of the outer edges of the transport belt in a horizontal belt vacuum filter is disclosed wherein the respective air box sections beneath the edges are fabricated into parallel members each exteriorly rectangular in form and having an air pressure chamber therein triangular in cross-section with its apex forming a longitudinal slot centrally disposed in the flat upper surface of the box, which slot communicates the air pressure admitted to the chamber to the upper surface of the box. Longitudinal sealing guides are upstandingly mounted on the upper edges of each air box and form fluid-pressure chambers above the flat upper surfaces in cooperation with the undersurface of the transport belt, which chambers contain the communicated air pressure and create a fluid cushion exerting evenly balanced supporting forces across the outer undersides of the belt.

  • Patent number: 4477011
Abstract: A method of continuously cladding aluminum strip by jointly warm rolling a core strip and an aluminum cladding strip in contact therewith, to bond the strip, wherein the core and cladding strips are advanced to the mill at respectively different line speeds over a looper roll disposed ahead of the mill and above the pass line of the mill, the cladding being also advanced around an ironing roll disposed ahead of the looper roll such that the cladding undergoes a double bend over the two rolls and is in contact with the core strip as and after it passes the looper roll but is out of contact with the core strip ahead of the looper roll. One or both sides of the core strip can be clad; for two-sided cladding, two cladding strips are respectively advanced over separate ironing rolls and into contact with the opposite surfaces of the strip.

  • Patent number: 4476746
Abstract: In a hydraulic regulator in a V-belt type continuously variable transmission for vehicles, a regulator valve supplied with input hydraulic pressure controls the line pressure as output hydraulic pressure depending on to the throttle opening, the reduction ratio between the input and output shafts of the V-belt type continuously variable transmission and the shift position of a manual valve. As the line pressure is close to the minimum value needed, power loss in the oil pump as well as fuel consumption are reduced.

  • Patent number: 4476658
Abstract: A roofing panel system including a plurality of elongated panels disposed in side-by-side parallel array on a supporting roof structure, each panel having an upwardly projecting longitudinal flange along each side with the flanges of adjacent panels together constituting a standing seam at the junction of the panels. A plurality of clips, fastened to the roof structure along each standing seam and interposed between the adjacent panel flanges constituting that seam, engage the tops of the adjacent panel flanges to anchor the panels to the roof structure and also support the adjacent panels from below. Each standing seam is covered by an elongated cap member snap-fitted over the tops of the adjacent panel flanges and bearing sealant material which engages the tops of the latter flanges to seal the seam. The top portion of each panel flange is bent toward the other flange of the panel to form a leg, over which the cap member extends, having a flat upwardly facing surface for contact with the sealant material.
