Abstract: A method of molding a series of contact lenses having a range of optical powers using a matrix of posterior and anterior molds having varying surface characteristics such that the optical powers vary while maintaining constant fitting characteristics, and using a number of mold types which is less than the total number of contact lenses produced in the series.
Abstract: A method for treating contact lenses involves irradiation of the contact lens with high energy radiation while immersed in an aqueous medium such as saline solution.
Abstract: A surgical tool container system for the organization, sterilization, storage and presentation of a group of surgical instruments for selection and retrieval by a medical practitioner during a surgical procedure. The container system includes an outer case having separable base and lid portions with a tool-holding tray removably inserted within the base portion of the case. The tray is provided with a plurality of holes formed therethrough and wherein a respective plurality of elastomeric grommets are fixed to the tray. Each grommet includes an axially extending bore wherein the shank of a surgical tool may be inserted and frictionally engaged in a generally upright orientation with respect to the tray.
Abstract: A copolymer for optical fiber applications is the polymerization product of a mixture comprising a fluorinated itaconate and an alkyl (meth)acrylate.
Abstract: Improved silicone-containing hydrogels are disclosed with enhanced wettability comprising a silicone-containing monomer, at least one acrylic-containing hydrophilic monomer, and at least one vinyl-containing hydrophilic monomer.
Abstract: A mold assembly includes first and second mold sections having respective first and second mold cavity defining surfaces, the first mold cavity defining surface terminating in an encircling peripheral rim and the second mold cavity defining surface terminating in a deformable peripheral annulus disposed at a diameter corresponding to the rim, and cooperating tapers depending from each of the first and second molds for relatively centering the molds.

Abstract: A preservative system for ophthalmic solutions, particularly contact lens solutions, comprises:(a) chlorhexidine or a water-soluble salt thereof; and(b) polyhexamethylene biguanide or a water-soluble salt thereof.
Abstract: A composition and method for cleaning and disinfecting of contact lenses that employ an electrical field applied to a lens that causes contaminating deposits to migrate therefrom is described. The composition of the invention includes a pair of component materials having different electrochemical potentials wherein the materials are substantially contained in a form wherein each material remains sufficiently physically separated when in contact with opposite sides of the lens such that the difference in electrochemical potential between the two materials is sufficient to cause charged contaminating deposits to migrate from the lens. The method of the invention requires placing a contaminated lens between a pair of component materials having different electrochemical potentials wherein physical separation is maintained, preferably, by including one of the components in a gel while the other component is in solution or another gel.

Abstract: Contact lenses, particularly adapted to correct presbyopic vision, having a multiaspheric back surface having a central zone, a marginal zone, and a peripheral zone, each of the zones being constituted by portions of second-order surfaces of revolution other than spherical, wherein the axial edge lift of the central and marginal zones increase toward the edge of the lens, the transition from the central to the marginal zone is tangential, and the axial edge lift of the peripheral zone decreases toward the edge of the lens.
Abstract: A composition for cleaning contact lenses comprises a silicone surface active agent having cleaning activity for contact lens deposits. The silicone surface active agent has at least one side chain including a radical ionizable in aqueous solution.
Abstract: A non-alcoholic, aqueous mouthwash composition is provided which contains a dispersion system containing a non-ionic surfactant selected from an hydrogenated castor oil and a polyoxyethylene polyoxypropylene block copolymer having about 50% to about 90% ethylene oxide, a humectant and a cationic antimicrobial agent. The composition exhibits a homogeneous, uniform appearance and a high degree of bacterial efficacy.
Abstract: Methods of treating contact lenses employ a material composed of (a) a hydrophobic core having at least three carbon atoms and (b) at least three hydrophilic polyethylene oxide chains attached to the core.
Abstract: Novel siloxane macromonomers are disclosed which can be copolymerized with hydrophilic monomers or hydrophobic monomers to prepare polymeric materials useful as biomedical devices. The copolymers made from hydrophilic monomers exhibit good oxygen permeability and are particularly suitable for use in contact lenses.
Abstract: Improved methods for modifying target surfaces through ablation which result in a reduction of ablation debris redeposition on the target surface are disclosed.
Abstract: Novel fumarate- and fumaramide-containing monomers are disclosed which are especially useful in the preparation of biocompatible devices, especially contact lenses.
Abstract: A container for transporting laboratory-type animals comprises a base and a lid, wherein the base and the lid when assembled define a volume for receiving one or more laboratory animals therewithin. The base includes a flange for contacting the lid, wherein the lid is removably attached to the flange of the base with removable stitching.
