Abstract: An alpha-olefin oligomer synthetic lubricant having an improved viscosity-volatility relationship is prepared from an alpha-olefin such as 1-decene.
Abstract: Indene is separated from close boiling, olefinically unsaturated alkylaromatic compounds by extractive distillation. For example, indene is separated from trans-.beta.-methylstyrene, and from 2-, 3- and 4-methylstyrene by extractive distillation using 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone as the extracting agent.

Abstract: A catalyst residue containing osmium catalyst having a substantial component with a valency state less than +5 is regenerated to a valency state greater than +5 by contacting the residue with an organic hydroperoxide at a pH greater than 7 and the regenerated catalyst residue is recycled to a hydroxylation reactor containing ethylene or propylene, a polar organic solvent, an aqueous solution of cesium, rubidium, potassium or tetraalkylammonium hydroxide and an organic hydroperoxide.
Abstract: An integrated in situ combustion process for recovering subterranean liquid and solid carbonaceous deposits in which the resulting flue gas of low heating value is combusted at substoichiometric conditions over two different oxidation catalysts in two combustion zones in series and is expanded in a gas turbine which drives the air compressor for injecting the combustion air into the underground carbonaceous deposit. One of the oxidation catalysts comprising platinum and at least one metal cocatalyst selected from Groups IIA and VIIB, Group VIII up through atomic No. 45, the lanthanides, chromium, zinc, silver, tin and antimony is provided to reduce the carbon monoxide in the combusted flue gas.
