Patent number: 6730275Abstract: The present invention is a method and apparatus for altering a carbon-containing compound in an aqueous mixture. According to a first aspect of the present invention, it has been discovered that for an aqueous mixture having a carbon containing compound with an ozone reaction rate less than the ozone reaction rate of pentachlorophenol, use of corona discharge in a low or non-oxidizing atmosphere increases the rate of destruction of the carbon containing compound compared to corona discharge an oxidizing atmosphere. For an aqueous mixture containing pentachlorphenol, there was essentially no difference in destruction between atmospheres. According to a second aspect of the present invention, it has been further discovered that an aqueous mixture having a carbon-containing compound in the presence of a catalyst and oxygen resulted in an increased destruction rate of the carbon containing compound compared to no catalyst.Type: GrantFiled: December 8, 2000Date of Patent: May 4, 2004Assignee: Battelle Memorial InstituteInventors: Amit K. Patent number: 6556138Abstract: The invention is a secure container for the transport and storage of materials that can alert the user as to the location and condition of materials, as well as container status. This provides cargo and access information that is critical in high-value or controlled shipments. The container uses a wound fiber-optic layer embedded in a covering. A transmitted light signal is sent through the fiber-optic layer to a receiver. Any change in the light signal causes an alarm or indication. The container also gives real time read outs, remotely or locally, as to the conditions of the contents and the container itself.Type: GrantFiled: December 31, 1998Date of Patent: April 29, 2003Assignee: Ziro Limit Composite, Inc.Inventors: Paul Sliva, Kurt A Stahl, Kevin L Simmons, Norman C Anheier, Norman R Gordon, Walter R Park

Patent number: 6498340Abstract: A method whereby a mass spectra generated by a mass spectrometer is calibrated by shifting the parameters used by the spectrometer to assign masses to the spectra in a manner which reconciles the signal of ions within the spectra having equal mass but differing charge states, or by reconciling ions having known differences in mass to relative values consistent with those known differences. In this manner, the mass spectrometer is calibrated without the need for standards while allowing the generation of a highly accurate mass spectra by the instrument.Type: GrantFiled: January 12, 2001Date of Patent: December 24, 2002Assignee: Battelle Memorial InstituteInventors: Gordon A. Patent number: 6387669Abstract: The present invention is a process wherein sulfide production by bacteria is efficiently turned on and off, using pH adjustment. The adjustment of pH impacts sulfide production by bacteria by altering the relative amounts of H2S and HS— in solution and thereby control the inhibition of the bacterial metabolism that produces sulfide. This process can be used to make a bioreactor produce sulfide “on-demand” so that the production of sulfide can be matched to its use as a metal precipitation reagent. The present invention is of significance because it enables the use of a biological reactor, a cost effective sulfide production system, by making the biological reactor produce hydrogen sulfide “on demand”, and therefore responsive to production schedules, waste stream generation rate, and health and safety requirements/goals.Type: GrantFiled: January 5, 2000Date of Patent: May 14, 2002Assignee: Battelle Memorial InstituteInventors: Michael J.
