Abstract: 5-Methyl-2-oxazolidinone and 5-methyl-3-(2-hydroxypropyl)-2-oxazolidinone are prepared by contacting urea and propylene carbonate in the presence of an initiator at a temperature from about 120.degree. C. to about 200.degree. C.
Abstract: Cyclic peptides, such as 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-5,12-dione, that are useful chelation agents for metals are prepared by contacting an acrylic acid ester and a 1,2-alkylenediamine.
Abstract: Allyl derivatives of phenols, thiophenols and arylamines are prepared by contacting such aromatic reactant with an allyl lower alkyl carbonate in the presence of a molybdenum, tungsten or Group VIII metal.
Abstract: Bicyclic amide ketals such as 1-aza-4,6-dioxabicyclo[3.3.0]octanes have utility as water or acid scavengers for addition to functional fluids.

Abstract: Novel (halo)(hydroxy)-substituted phosphorus-containing acid derivatives are disclosed. Preferred compounds are 2-halo-3-hydroxypropyl ester derivatives of phosphorous and phosphoric acid formed by reaction of at least some amount of tertiary butyl glycidyl ether with a halogenated derivative of a phosphorus-containing acid followed by acid dealkylation of the product. The polyol products are useful in the production of polyurethane articles such as foams having increased resistance to the effects of fire.
Abstract: The process of hydrocyanating an .alpha.-cyanoacrylate ester with an alkali metal cyanide is improved by combining the reactants in an equivalent ratio of alkali metal cyanide to .alpha.-cyanoacrylate ester of from about 1:1 to about 1.1:1.
Abstract: A sequestering agent useful in chelation of calcium and/or magnesium ions in aqueous solution comprises by weight from about 2 percent to about 20 percent iminodiacetic acid or a water-soluble salt thereof and from about 98 percent to about 80 percent of nitrilotriacetic acid or a water-soluble salt thereof.
Abstract: Substituted phenols are converted in high yields to substituted 4,4'-biphenols by reaction with a substituted 4,4'-diphenoquinone. The substituted 4,4'-diphenoquinone reactant is regenerated by oxidation of a portion of the substituted 4,4'-biphenol product.
Abstract: High purity berlinite is prepared by formation of an organoaluminum phosphate hydrogel in an organic solvent and subsequently hydrolyzing the hydrogel by reaction with water at pH less than or equal to 3.0. The berlinite is useful as a replacement for silicon-based quartz in electronic applications and in piezoelectric devices.
Abstract: Aromatic aldehydes are formed by the liquid phase reaction of molecular oxygen with methyl-substituted aromatic compounds in the presence of base, a cobalt, manganese, chromium or nickel salt catalyst and an easily removable amine.
Abstract: A nickel-oxide hydroxide electrode is prepared by galvanostatic cycling of a nickel metal in contact with a basic electrolyte under electrochemical conditions.
Abstract: A novel composition of matter for catalyzing the polymerization of vicinal epoxides is formed by the reaction of a trialkylaluminum compound, phenothiazine, water, acetylacetone and a Lewis base selected from tetrahydrofuran and 1,4-dioxane.
Abstract: Unsaturated heterocyclic carbonyl-containing compounds, e.g., 2H-imidazol-2-ones, 2(3H)-oxazolones and 2H,3H-pyrrol-2-ones, are prepared by the anodic oxidation of saturated heterocyclic carbonyl-containing precursors of the above compounds in a C.sub.1-4 alcohol or carboxylic acid solvent in the presence of a supporting electrolyte followed by dehydrosubstitution of the alkoxy- or acyloxy-substituted intermediate. The products formed may be polymerized or copolymerized with other ethylenically unsaturated monomers to prepared resins, films, etc. or they may be employed as intermediates for the preparation of various biologically active compounds.
Abstract: Aromatic aldehydes are formed by the liquid phase reaction of molecular oxygen with methyl-substituted aromatic compounds in the presence of base, a cobalt, manganese, chromium or nickel salt catalyst and activated charcoal.
Abstract: Monomeric and polymeric triarylsulfonium complex salts which may be prepared by contacting diarylsulfoxides or polymeric arylsulfoxides with aromatic compounds in the presence of an organosulfonic acid are described. An example is tris-(4-phenoxyphenyl)sulfonium methane sulfonate prepared by reaction of bis-(4-phenoxyphenyl)sulfoxide, diphenyl ether and methane sulfonic acid. The compounds demonstrate useful corrosion inhibiting properties.
