Patent number: 5485011Abstract: A two-sided passive infrared integrated-circuit sensor package for use in infrared motion detectors as well as other infrared sensing applications. The integrated-circuit sensor package has a casing with viewing windows transmissive to infrared radiation on opposite sides. Infrared sensing elements are mounted within the integrated circuit package so that both sides of the sensing elements are able to receive infrared radiation through the viewing windows from the areas in front of and behind the integrated-circuit package. By this simple mechanical change in the package and sensing element mounting, the area of sensitivity of the sensor is effectively doubled with no change in the electronic design of the circuit and with no increase in the number or size of the infrared-sensitive sensing elements within the IC package.Type: GrantFiled: January 28, 1994Date of Patent: January 16, 1996Assignee: Larry C. Patent number: 5452727Abstract: A myographic measurement apparatus for direct strength measurement of the orofacial muscles, in particular, the lip and tongue muscles. The apparatus includes a pressure-sensitive probe that is adapted to be placed in engagement with the orofacial muscle being tested. The probe provides a pressure response representative of the muscle strength under test. The probe is coupled to a transducer that converts the probe's pressure response in real time to an electrical signal representative of the force exerted on the probe by the muscle under test. The probe provides a representative pressure reading continuously over a test run of prescribed duration. The electrical signal generated in the test run is sampled and analyzed in real-time to determine a characteristic maximum pressure and hence characteristic maximum muscle strength achieved over the test run. The maximum muscle strength is provided in a form that may be incorporated directly into computerized patient records.Type: GrantFiled: January 21, 1994Date of Patent: September 26, 1995Inventors: Ronald E. Patent number: 5453622Abstract: A passive infra-red motion detector with wide field of view extending to greater than 180 degrees that can be achieved in a cost-effective manner using a single sensor. The motion detector includes a generally prismoidal infra-red mirror having two angled reflecting surfaces forming an apex, which apex may be truncated. The prismoidal reflecting surfaces and their apex are positioned close to and overlying at least a portion of the motion detector sensor and the apex is spaced apart from the sensor at most a distance comparable to a characteristic transverse dimension of the sensor. Because of the close proximity of the mirror to the sensor, the area of the reflecting surfaces need not be very large and may be made comparatively small. The mirror surfaces deflect infrared energy from a suitable arrangement of lenses or other focusing elements onto the sensor from a plurality of zones so as to extend the lateral extremities of the motion detector field of view.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 1994Date of Patent: September 26, 1995Assignee: Larry C. Patent number: 5423587Abstract: A combination camper shell and lumber rack for a pickup truck. A framework is mounted on the truck and used as a lumber rack when the covering shell is not installed, and then when desired the lumber rack is readily converted to a framework for supporting a covering shell. The lumber rack is structured so that it may be converted to a full camper shell frame by setting in place several rafter members that are adapted to be removably mounted across the top of the lumber rack frame to define the camper top profile. A flexible foldable soft top is shaped and arranged to extend over the lumber rack frame with the rafters in position and to be secured in position so as to enclose the frame. The walls of the shell are formed of a fabric, plastic or equivalent material shaped to cooperate with the frame and be supported thereby to define the camper covering sheet.Type: GrantFiled: July 20, 1993Date of Patent: June 13, 1995Inventor: Brian L. Patent number: 5418368Abstract: A passive infra-red motion detector with wide field of view extending to greater than 180 degrees that can be achieved in a cost-effective manner using a single sensor. The motion detector includes a planar infra-red sensor and two or more infrared-reflecting faces which are positioned close to and overlying at least a portion of the sensor. The reflecting faces are configured so that their ends proximal to the sensor overlie the sensor at its midportion and the faces extend from the midportion in different directions away from one another to reflect radiation to the sensor from different sides of the sensor. In one embodiment the reflecting faces form a generally prismoidal shape. In another embodiment the proximal ends of a pair of faces are displaced laterally from one another over the sensor so that the overlying faces obstruct a portion of the sensor and leave a portion unobstructed to form a checkerboard pattern of obstructed and unobstructed regions.Type: GrantFiled: January 12, 1994Date of Patent: May 23, 1995Assignee: Intelectron Products CompanyInventors: Donald R. Patent number: 5381362Abstract: A high-speed, high-throughput matched optical filter for processing data that allows for rapid reprogramming to change the reference signal or signals. A coherent time-domain optical memory system includes a coherent time-domain optical storage material (18) and a laser (16) for providing pulses of optical radiation in coherent time-domain optical storage relation with the storage material. One or more reference signals are first stored in the material by modulating one or more of the laser pulses with the reference signals and writing these pulses on the storage material (18) in close succession with their associated write pulses as is customary in coherent time-domain optical memories. The reference signals are phase encoded before they are stored. Another laser pulse modulated with the signal to be processed is then applied to the storage material. The echo signal induced by this signal pulse takes the form of the correlation of the reference pulse with the signal pulse.Type: GrantFiled: July 30, 1993Date of Patent: January 10, 1995Assignee: SRI InternationalInventors: Xiao An Shen, Yu Sheng Bai, Eric M. Patent number: 5369665Abstract: A method and apparatus for coherent time-domain optical data storage utilizing a randomizing phase modulation to increase storage capacity. A laser (10) generates write. read, and data pulses which are applied to an acousto-optic modulator (11), which modulates the pulses according to a modulation signal received from a radio-frequency modulator (12), and the modulated pulses are applied to the storage medium (13). The data signal to be recorded on the storage medium is subjected to spread-spectrum modulation, and in particular to pseudo-random phase modulation. The RF-modulator (12) modulates the write and read pulses with a frequency-chirping modulation and modulates the data pulse with the spread-spectrum modulated data signal before applying the respective pulses to the storage medium. The result is that a significantly longer data signal may be effectively recorded on the optical storage medium for a given characteristic de-phasing time of the medium.Type: GrantFiled: July 13, 1993Date of Patent: November 29, 1994Assignee: SRI InternationalInventors: Yu Sheng Bai, Ravinder Kachru
