  • Patent number: 4517066
Abstract: Metal to rubber adhesion is improved by metal substrates having a coating thereon such as brass, copper, and the like. The coating is applied by an ion beam sputter deposition or, in the alternative, such a coating is partially removed through ion beam etching. The present invention is particularly useful in tire cord construction, metal reinforced belts and hoses, and the like, since articles made therefrom have superior and unexpected moisture aged rubber-to-metal adhesion properties.

  • Patent number: 4470865
Abstract: An annular tire tread belt is assembled of uncured resilient material having reinforcing cords. An annular container of resilient material has reinforcing cords extending between annular bead rings at the edges. The container is shaped in a toroidal configuration and the tread belt stuck to the container by a layer of suitable tacky barrier material with sufficient tack to maintain the tread belt in a centered position on the container for engagement with a centered portion of the mold. The barrier material also is sufficiently incompatible with the materials of the container and tread belt to prevent appreciable chemical bonding across the interface during curing of the tread belt. After at least partial curing of the tread belt, the tread belt is detached from the container and is ready for use in a tire.

  • Patent number: 4465709
Abstract: Tire cord fabric is processed by supporting a section of fabric and adjusting the warp cords to hang so that they are evenly distributed in a longitudinal direction. The fabric is then clamped in place and a dilute reactive polyurethane solution is sprayed to wet the cords on both sides of the fabric so that the coating on the cords is extremely thin and acts as a sizing material for the fabric to give it dimensional stability and preserve the interstices of the cords. The fabric is then heated to evaporate the solvent and cause the polyurethane mixture to be at least partially cured and to at least partially cover the cords of the fabric. The treated fabric may be used to reinforce a cast polyurethane tire.

  • Patent number: 4463125
Abstract: Novel rubber compounding ingredients are disclosed. The ingredients, which may be used in a wide variety of rubber compounds having siliceous fillers comprise certain N-substituted melamines which act as silica coupling agents. The melamines bind both to the siliceous filler and to the rubber network to increase the reinforcement effect of the silica. Use of the melamines of the invention reduces the cost of producing the rubber when compared to rubbers containing prior art silica coupling agents.
