Abstract: The present invention provides a system (method and apparatus) for creating photorealistic 3D models of environments and/or objects from a plurality of stereo images obtained from a mobile stereo camera and optional monocular cameras. The cameras may be handheld, mounted on a mobile platform, manipulator or a positioning device. The system automatically detects and tracks features in image sequences and self-references the stereo camera in 6 degrees of freedom by matching the features to a database to track the camera motion, while building the database simultaneously. A motion estimate may be also provided from external sensors and fused with the motion computed from the images. Individual stereo pairs are processed to compute dense 3D data representing the scene and are transformed, using the estimated camera motion, into a common reference and fused together. The resulting 3D data is represented as point clouds, surfaces, or volumes.

Abstract: The present invention provides an imaging probe for imaging mammalian tissues and structures using high resolution imaging, including ultrasound and optical coherence tomography. The imaging probe uses electrostatic discharge for actuating a metalized cantilever which holds the end portion of imaging assembly which emits energy in the imaging probe device by holding the cantilever at a potential such that it is neither grounded or charged such that the only electrical path to ground is through a dissipative polymer forming part of the device which is enveloped by a wire or coil held at ground potential. A high voltage electrode attracts the metalized cantilever and the dissipative polymer is used to connect to the cantilever to ground causing the cantilever to move about thereby scanning the region in front of the probe.

Abstract: The present invention provides a new class of organic/inorganic hybrid materials having [ER]n rings interconnected by E? atoms. In an embodiment a class of materials called high organic group content periodic mesoporous organosilicas (HO-PMO's) with [SiR]3 rings interconnected by O atoms is described. The measured dielectric, mechanical and thermal properties of the materials suggest that an increased organic content achieved by the [SiR]3 rings of a high organic group content periodic mesoporous organosilica leads to superior materials properties potentially useful for a wide range of applications including microelectronics, separation, catalysis, sensing, optics or electronic printing.

Abstract: The present invention provides electrically conductive paper composites prepared from cellulose fibers modified to bind a conducting polymer to a surface of the cellulose fibers and mixing these with unmodified cellulose fibers and forming paper products from the composite. Conducting paper composites so formed were investigated for their conductivity and strength properties as a function of monomer dosage or percentage of modified fibers in the mixture and for the composites it was found that less monomer (i.e. conductive polymer) was needed to achieve the same conductivity obtained from conducting paper made from only the modified cellulose. A higher tensile strength was obtained with the composite conducting paper than was attained with conducting paper made from only the modified cellulose. The electrically conductive paper composites may also be prepared from cellulose fibers mixed with particulate fillers modified to bind a conducting polymer to a surface of the particulate fillers.
Abstract: The present invention provides adsorbents for deep denitrogenation/desulfurization of hydrocarbon oils, and more particularly to an adsorbent material that selectively adsorbs organonitrogen and organosulfur from transportation fuels at room temperature and atmospheric pressure.
Abstract: The present invention relates to supramolecular polymers containing sequence-selective hydrogen bonding subunits in their backbone which form double helices. The invention allows for tuning of the numbers and sequences of donor/acceptor units incorporated in any one crosslinking hydrogen bonding subunit and hence tuning of the interaction strength not only through the amount of crosslinking material incorporated but also through modulation of the strength of the crosslinking interactions. It also allows for the incorporation of more than one type of crosslinking agent in the material allowing for multiple strengths of crosslinking which are each tunable with regard to disruption from solvent, temperature and stress. Hydrogen bond strength between oligomeric chains can be tailored through modification of the numbers and sequences of the donors/acceptors in the oligomers.
Abstract: Method for the preparation of inorganic-NP-composite microgels is based on the reversible transfer of microgels between water and an organic solvent such as tetrahydrofuran (THF). The method is used to produce semiconductor nanocrystals, often referred to as quantum dots (QDs) which are well known for their unique optical, electrical, magnetic and catalytic properties, as the inorganic NPs, recognizing that the best quality QDs are synthesized by a high temperature process in organic media, and have their surface covered with hydrophobic ligands (such as trioctylphosphine oxide, TOPO) that render the NPs insoluble in an aqueous solution.

Abstract: The present invention provides a reactor and gasification process for the continuous controlled production of hydrogen (H2) and a by-product synthesis gas (mixture of CO+H2+CO2), such a process called a hydrogen priority poly-generation process (HPPP). The reactor uses a circulating molten iron process, which is capable of gasifying a variety of carbonaceous materials including low rank coals and biomass. The process employs an iron steam oxidation-reduction cycle in a multi-chamber reactor including a multi-vessel reactor system, where in one compartment or vessel hydrogen is produced by steam oxidation of molten iron; and in a second compartment or vessel the iron is regenerated by carbon reduction of molten iron oxide thereby producing a by-product synthesis gas (CO+H2+CO2), and excess heat which can be used to produce steam, and in a third step the iron is purified before being returned to the steam oxidation step in the process.

Abstract: A synthetic reed for use in reed-blown wind instruments such as the clarinets, saxophones, oboes and bassoons may be made from an oriented thermoplastic material such as uniaxially oriented polypropylene. The reed may have a profile that is thinner near the tip and in the vamp than the profile of a cane reed of equivalent playing strength, and may be machined from an oriented polymer blank has a higher longitudinal modulus than that of said cane reed of equivalent playing strength.
Abstract: Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a high-resolution, non-invasive technique to image subsurface tissue and tissue functions. A broadband light source illuminates an object and the reflected photons are processed using an interferometer, demodulated into inphase and quadrature components and then digitized. The captured data contains information about the velocity of the moving scatterers but current Doppler estimation algorithms have a limited velocity detection range. Using a two dimensional velocity estimation, Doppler OCT (DOCT) can be used for the detection of in vivo aortic blood flow rates of over 1 m/s peak velocity through an esophageal DOCT probe. Previous methods have used a transverse Kasai (TK) autocorrelation estimation to estimate the velocity which is good for slow velocities, such as in the microvasculature. By calculating the Kasai autocorrelation with a lag in the depth or axial direction, backscattered frequency information is obtained which yields high velocity rate information.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for detecting analytes in a medium, and more particularly the present invention relates to an assay based on light diffraction which appears or changes upon the binding of analytes to their specific receptors laid out in patterns on a substrate, which has high sensitivity due to the appropriate choice of such patterns. The present invention is based on the principle that the pattern of recognition elements, which gives rise to the diffraction of the incident light in a diffraction-based assay, can be chosen in such a way so as to facilitate detection, and to enhance the signal to be detected compared to known gratings such as parallel straight lines. In one aspect the substrate itself has a surface topography designed to enhance the diffraction pattern signals. In another aspect the substrate is a diffractive optic element having the analyte-specific receptors affixed to the optic element.

Abstract: Blending methods for adding and uniformly mixing a small fraction of relatively small particles (additives) to a bulk particulate powder of larger size than the additives. In particular, the present invention provides blending methods for adding and uniformly mixing a small percentage of flow/fluidization additives into fine powders, especially fine paint powders. The fine powder and additives are first pre-mixed for macro-scale homogeneity and then further mixed at a micro-scale (such as with a screen mixing process) for micro-scale homogeneity. With these methods, optimum dispersions and maximum functionalities of additives can be obtained and the disadvantages caused by severe agglomerates of additives can be avoided.
