  • Patent number: 8195249
Abstract: A mobile device having a wireless local area network interface and one or more other wireless interfaces identifies a location of the mobile device via one or more of the other wireless interfaces, estimates a likelihood of finding a wireless local area network at the location, and scans for wireless local area networks while at the location during scan sessions that are separated by intervals, where the intervals are determined by the estimated likelihood.

  • Patent number: 8180397
Abstract: An identification system includes a mobile communications device and an accessory having a connection plug with a conical tip. An insulating ring extends about the conical tip portion to define a tip detection contact. The device includes a tip detection pin positioned adjacent to an interior end portion of a connection socket on the device. The tip detection pin engages the tip detection contact to enable identification of the accessory by the mobile communications device. An improved accessory is for use with a mobile communications device. A method identifies an accessory which has its connection plug inserted into a socket on a mobile communications device.

  • Patent number: 8172151
Abstract: A smart card reader is adapted to extract and store authentication data from a response APDU received from a smart card before generating a filtered response APDU, wherein the filtered response APDU does not include the authentication data. Beneficially, when the smart card reader transmits the filtered response APDU toward a destination, the biometric template data is less susceptible to interception, thereby providing a more secure solution.

  • Patent number: 8162211
Abstract: A wireless device may alert a wireless smart card reader that communication of data between the wireless device and the wireless smart card reader is probably imminent by sending an activation alert. Upon receipt of the activation alert, if the wireless smart card reader is in a low-power state, the wireless smart card reader may enter a higher-power state. If the wireless smart card reader is in the higher-power state upon receipt of the activation alert, the wireless smart card reader may remain in the higher-power state until a timeout period has expired. The wireless device may instruct the wireless smart card reader to enter the low-power state by sending a deactivation alert if the wireless device detects that communication of data between the wireless device and the wireless smart card reader is not likely to occur within a specified period of time.

  • Patent number: 8166530
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for facilitating access to an electronic device. Password information is stored on the electronic device, and on a portable authenticator. When a user attempts to access the electronic device, the user is prompted to enter a password at the electronic device. The portable authenticator determines the validity of the entered password. The electronic device receives the results of the validity determination from the portable authenticator, and provides access to the electronic device based on the received validity determination.

  • Patent number: 8159363
Abstract: In a handheld electronic device, a motor is controlled to adjust, according to input received at a user-input element of the device, an angle of rotation of a camera module about a rotation axis of the camera module. The camera module is partially embedded in a housing of the device. An image sensor is embedded in the camera module and senses an image in a field of view that is centered around a line of sight. The line of sight is perpendicular to the rotation axis. An orientation of the housing relative to a direction of gravity is sensed, and the motor is controlled to rotate the camera module and hence the line of sight about the rotation axis to achieve a particular angle between the line of sight and the direction of gravity.

  • Patent number: 8156336
Abstract: Authentication of two devices in communication with a third device is achieved where the first and second devices each possess a shared secret value. The authentication includes communication of authentication values from the first device to the second device using the third device. Similarly, there is communication of values from the second device to the first device using the third device. The third device retains the communicated values. The values are calculated to permit the third device to authenticate the first and second devices without the third device receiving the shared secret value. The authentication may be used to establish a communications channel between the first and the second devices.

  • Patent number: 8146832
Abstract: A wireless-enabled smart card reader receives an Answer to Reset (ATR) from a smart card and transmits the ATR using a wireless communication link to a computing device without waiting for an ATR request from the computing device. The computing device may cache the ATR and use it for subsequent communication sessions with the smart card.

  • Patent number: 8107974
Abstract: A probabilistic prediction is made of the location of a wireless-enabled mobile station in a wireless local area network. The prediction includes calculating a vector representing movement of the mobile station through a space in which two or more access points of the network are located, and determining a region surrounding the vector in which the mobile station has at least a given probability to be located within a certain period of time.

  • Patent number: 8103322
Abstract: In a particular embodiment there is provided a handheld electronic device, comprising a bridge, a first device member having a first i/o element thereon and a second device member having a second i/o element thereon. The first and second device members are slidable relative to the bridge between a closed position for the handheld electronic device and a spaced-apart position for the handheld electronic device. In the closed position the first and second device members overlap such that the first device member blocks access to the second i/o element. In the spaced-apart position the second i/o element is accessible and the first and second device members are spaced apart by a selected non-zero spacing.

  • Patent number: 8099126
Abstract: An actuator notification system is for use with a mobile communications device. A device actuator is selectively movable, by hand, between first and second positions. An electric drive motor operatively engages the actuator. A control processor on-board the device is operatively encoded to start the motor, so as to drive the actuator between the first and second positions. A related method of automatically driving an actuator on a mobile communications device uses a control processor on-board the device which is encoded to start a motor and drive an actuator between first position and second positions. A related mobile communications device is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 8090107
Abstract: A key agreement method is carried out by a first system in conjunction with a second system over a bidirectional communication path, including generating a first key pair having a first public key and a first private key, sending the first public key to the second system, receiving a second public key generated by the second system, and calculating a master key based upon the first private key, the second public key, a long-term private key, and a long-term public key. The long-term private key was generated by the first system during a previous key-agreement method as part of a long-term key pair. The long-term public key was generated by the second system and received during the previous key-agreement method. The previous key-agreement method required a secret to be known to the first system and the second system, thus conferring authentication based on the secret to the long-term public key.

  • Patent number: 8014831
Abstract: A mobile communication device is capable of communicating with a battery authorization server. Determining an authorization status of a smart battery currently powering the mobile communication device involves an initial authorization process and a subsequent authorization process. The initial authorization process is conducted between the mobile communication device and the smart battery. If the initial authorization process is successful, it is followed by a subsequent authorization process between the mobile communication device and the battery authorization server.

  • Patent number: 8009635
Abstract: If a handoff by a mobile station currently associated with a particular access point is probable, then the particular access point sends an activation alert to one or more other access points. An access point receiving the activation alert that is in a low-power state enters a higher-power state. An access point receiving the activation alert that is in a higher-power state, remains in that higher-power state.

  • Patent number: 8005032
Abstract: An access point is to transmit delivery traffic indication messages at different periods of beacon frames for different wireless client devices associated with the access point. A client device may store an indication of a preferred period of beacon frames at which to listen to delivery traffic indication messages when in power save mode. The client device may adjust its preferred period according to predefined considerations, for example a charge level of a battery to power the client device and/or an expected usage model for the client device. A client device may negotiate its preferred period with the access point.

  • Patent number: 7944869
Abstract: A mesh node of an infrastructure wireless local area network ‘WLAN’ is coupled to a battery which is coupled to a device that is able to harness energy from a source of renewable energy. Energy management of the mesh node includes conducting simulations of a system comprising the mesh node, the device, and the battery in its current state of charge, determining an admissible load for the mesh node from the simulations, and withholding communication services by the mesh node for one or more periods of time a cumulative duration of which is related to power consumption of the mesh node when handling the admissible load. The simulations involve meteorological data related to the source of renewable energy in the vicinity of the mesh node.
