  • Patent number: 4165614
Abstract: A simple vapor-power plant, completely self-contained in an enclosed space, whose working fluid executes, in a truly continuous fashion, a complete cyclic operation involving at least vaporization, expansion, condensation and recycling of itself by flowing steadily through a closed loop of continuous space consisting of several distinct funcational zones within a capillary (or porous) structure and an adjacent opened space, while converting the work of expansion into the corresponding mechanical work by a free-rotating turbine situated inside said opened space; said turbine being the only required basic moving-part of said vapor-power plant.

  • Patent number: 4163367
Abstract: The adaptation of a compressed-fluid (such as compressed-air) powered turbine in conjunction with the use of a flywheel as a hybrid propulsion system for nonstationary applications, such as vehicle drive, is shown and its practicality demonstrated. This propulsion system requires a nonpolluting fluid, such as air, and a source of mechanical or electrical energy to compress said fluid and energize said flywheel, both of which act as energy storage media. An expander/compressor unit, such as a turbine, is used for converting the stored energy of said compressed-fluid into shaft power by expanding said fluid, and recovering the braking energy during vehicle deceleration by compressing and storing the atmospheric air (if air is used). Said flywheel is used not only for providing peak powers necessary for vehicle acceleration but also for recovering the braking energy during vehicle deceleration and refilling said compressed-fluid in an emergency.

  • Patent number: 4118285
Abstract: Herein are disclosed an improved method and apparatus for separating a mixture of liquids of differing volatilities by fractional distillation in a plate-type apparatus. Plates consisting at least in part of a porous structure having capillary-type passages extending between openings on one side of the plate and openings on the other side of the plate are employed. The capillary-type passages are adapted to be wetted and filled at least in part by the liquid condensate resulting from the condensation of a vapor mixture, with the consequent formation of menisci in the capillary-type passages and the generation of capillary pressures that cause the condensed liquid to be lodged within the capillary-type passages and transmitted through the plate while preventing the passage of vapor.

  • Patent number: 4109530
Abstract: A liquid specimen transfer container, designed to prevent contamination, provides two interconnected storage chambers. The first chamber receives donor inputs via an integral basin which prevents splashing. Input in excess of a measured volume overflows into the second storage chamber for retention and later recovery. A removable closure such as a cap or plug, or suitable valve means such as a rupturable seal, prevents discharge of liquid from first chamber until the transfer container is connected to a receiving vessel such as a laboratory test instrument requiring a measured sample.

  • Patent number: 4087196
Abstract: Apparatus for deriving energy from a moving gas stream, such as an atmospheric air current, and comprising: a rigid body or housing which is generally symmetrical about a single longitudinal axis intended to be oriented in the direction of stream flow, the body or housing defining a longitudinal, coaxial, convergent, frustoconical passageway therethrough for at least a portion of the stream; a gas turbine rotor mounted for rotation about the common axis in a plane rearwardly adjacent the plane of the outlet opening of the passageway in response to the flow of gas through the passageway; an induction fan mounted for rotation about the common axis substantially in the plane of the inlet opening of the passageway; driving means for rotating the induction fan at a fixed speed, or at a variable speed dependent upon gas stream velocity; means for transmitting the rotational energy produced by the turbine rotor; and optional means, such as a generator, for converting the rotational energy into electrical energy.

  • Patent number: 4066526
Abstract: Herein are disclosed a method and apparatus whereby dispersed matter in the form of finely-divided particles, and/or in the form of molecular species such as molecules, and atoms are separated from a gaseous or liquid medium by subjecting same by a corona discharge via a perforated separating electrode to repel same and continuously removing the charged matter.

  • Patent number: 4054414
Abstract: Microanalytical method for the simultaneous determination of the elements, carbon, hydrogen, sulfur, chlorine, bromine, iodine and nitrogen in a single, small sample of an organic material, said method comprising the steps of: (a) substantially instantaneously igniting and rapidly and completely combusting a small sample of limited size in a heated combustion zone in a pressurized atmosphere of substantially pure oxygen; (b) conducting the gaseous mixture of combustion products in excess oxygen through a heated equilibrium zone; (c) conducting the effluent from the equilibrium zone through a gas chromatographic separation zone containing an adsorbent material adapted to separate combustion products of the said elements each from the others; (d) conducting the effluent from the separation zone through detecting means to quantitatively and separately measure the amount of the combustion product of each of the elements; (e) calculating from the amounts of the several combustion products the percentage content of

  • Patent number: 4044459
Abstract: Process for recovering high-grade blast furnace iron or other metal from pieces of blast furnace iron or such other metal and blast furnace slag having large amounts of such blast furnace slag, by tumbling a substantial number of such pieces to achieve a constant redistribution thereof while impacting at least a substantial portion of such pieces with a high velocity, relatively small diameter shot or grit which has a hardness which is greater than the hardness of the slag, thereby abrading the impurity, while leaving the body of non-impurity substantially intact.
