Patent number: 6084224Abstract: A method and apparatus for in-situ induction tempering is provided in which an induction coil is used to temper a part in-situ at the location. The use of an induction coil in-situ at the heat treating location eliminates the need (and time and expense) of a multi-step process wherein in part to be tempered would otherwise have to be moved from the quenching location to the tempering location, such as at a tempering furnace. It also eliminates the need for the tempering furnace, which is a great space savings. In one form of the invention, the power supplied to the induction coil is controlled by a closed-loop temperature controller that is controlled by the temperature in the vicinity of the tempered part, as opposed to simply be controlling on time at temperature.Type: GrantFiled: August 25, 1998Date of Patent: July 4, 2000Assignee: Chrysler CorporationInventor: Michael F. Patent number: 6074125Abstract: A tie rod assembly for a motor vehicle includes an inner tie rod member, an outer tie rod member and an intermediate member. The intermediate member is telescopically associated with both of the inner and outer tie rod members. A generally C-shaped clamp is adapted to arrest relative movement between the inner and outer tie rod members. The clamp includes first and second ends which are spaced apart so as to define a gap. The outer tie rod member includes a longitudinally extending slot. The clamp is fixedly attached to the inner tie rod member such that the gap between the first and second ends of the clamp is aligned with the longitudinally extending slot of the inner tie rod member. As a result, clamping forces are more effectively transferred from the inner tie rod member to the intermediate member, and in turn from the intermediate member to the outer tie rod member.Type: GrantFiled: June 26, 1998Date of Patent: June 13, 2000Assignee: Chrysler CorporationInventor: Lawrence E. Patent number: 6073990Abstract: An inner body panel that is configured to receive a snap-in component and a corresponding method of manufacture are provided. The inner body panel includes a urethane layer having an inner molded edge defining a first aperture and a glass mat layer affixed to the urethane layer. The glass mat has a second aperture that is smaller than the first aperture. The inner body panel also includes a cloth layer affixed to the glass mat layer that has a third aperture that is smaller than the first aperture. The cloth layer and the glass mat layer are trapped between the inner molded edge and the snap-in component, whereby a soft gasket fit between the snap-in component and the inner molded edge is produced and damage to the inner body panel is minimized when the snap-in component is inserted into the inner body panel.Type: GrantFiled: February 17, 1998Date of Patent: June 13, 2000Assignee: Chrysler CorporationInventor: Paul J. Patent number: 6047227Abstract: A method and apparatus for operating geography-altering machinery such as a track-type tractor, road grader, paver or the like relative to a work site to alter the geography of the site toward a desired condition. A first digital three-dimensional model of the desired site geography, and a second digital three-dimensional model of the actual site geography are stored in a digital data storage facility. The machine is equipped with a position receiver to determine in three-dimensional space the location of the machine relative to the site. A dynamic database receives the machine position information, determines the difference between the first and second site models and generates representational signals of that difference for directing the operation of the machine to bring the actual site geography into conformity with the desired site geography.Type: GrantFiled: November 19, 1996Date of Patent: April 4, 2000Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Daniel E. Patent number: 6045146Abstract: A suspension system for a motor vehicle includes a torsion member having a generally arcuate longitudinal axis. The suspension system further includes first and second control arms operatively interconnecting first and second vehicle wheels with a frame. The first and second control arms are mounted to the frame for pivotally movement. The torsion member directly connects the first and second control arms and is operative to selectively transfer torque therebetween in response to vertical displacement of the first and second wheels. When the first and second wheels are vertically displaced in unison, no torque is transferred between the control arms and the torsion member merely rotates about its generally arcuate longitudinal axis. When a difference in vertical displacement of the first and second wheels exist, for example, during cornering of the vehicle, each control arm would input opposite rotation in the torsion member, thereby generating a resisting torque.Type: GrantFiled: May 22, 1998Date of Patent: April 4, 2000Assignee: Chrysler CorporationInventors: Robert M. Schoen, Kenneth S. Deneau

Patent number: 6039378Abstract: A cargo tray for a motor vehicle is adapted to be carried by a seatback of an occupant seat. The cargo tray is operable in a stowed mode in which a bottom surface is positioned substantially flush against the seatback and in an operative mode in which the bottom surface provides a generally horizontal support surface upwardly spaced from a floor of the motor vehicle. In the preferred embodiment, the bottom surface of the cargo tray is pivotally attached to the seatback of the occupant seat and intended to be utilized when the seatback is articulated to a folded position. In such a use, the bottom surface cooperates with the now horizontally oriented seatback to provide an extended support surface, thereby increasing cargo capacity.Type: GrantFiled: July 15, 1998Date of Patent: March 21, 2000Assignee: Chrysler CorporationInventor: Gary M.
