Abstract: A growth regulation process involving certain phosphonic acid compounds having the general formula: ##STR1## The growth regulation process of the present invention relates mainly, though not entirely, to the inducement of an ethylene response or ethylene-type response in plants and part thereof including, but not limited to, stems, roots, leaves, flowers, buds, and harvested as well as unharvested fruit. The method of the present invention produces a wide variety of plant growth responses including:1. Increasing yields2. Auxin activity3. Inhibition of terminal growth, control of apical dominance, increase in branching and increase in tillering4. Changing bio-chemical composition of plant or portions thereof5. Abscission of foliage, flowers and fruit6. Hastening ripening and color promotion in fruit7. Increasing flowering and fruiting8. Abortion or inhibition of flowering and seed development9. Prevention of lodging10. Stimulation of seed germination and breaking of dormancy11. Resistance to freeze injury12.

Abstract: Medium density polyethylene pipe blends with improved low temperature brittleness properties and pipe made therefrom with enhanced gloss composed ofa high density ethylene polymer;a low pressure, low density alkylene interpolymer; anda carbon black concentrate wherein the carrier in said concentrate is a low pressure, low density alkylene interpolymer.
Abstract: A degassing or purging process is disclosed for the removal of unpolymerized gaseous monomers from solid olefin polymers. The disclosed process comprises conveying the solid polymer, e.g. in granular form, to the top of a purge vessel by means of an inert gas stream, feeding an inert gas stream to the bottom of the purge vessel and countercurrently contacting the solid polymer with the inert gas purge stream to strip away the gaseous monomers evolved from the solid polymer, and recycling a portion of the resulting stream to the purge vessel. In one embodiment, the recycle serves as the conveying gas and in another embodiment as the purge stream. The process is especially useful in purging gaseous unpolymerized hydrocarbon monomers from low pressure-polymerized, low density ethylene-hydrocarbon copolymers.

Abstract: A method for increasing the sugar content of plants by applying to such plants an effective amount of an enol derivative of 2-aryl-1,3-cyclohexanedione compound.
Abstract: A protective structure for a joint of a body limb comprising an outer shield supported by internal bracing and cushioning devices so arranged that the shock of any blow upon said shield is fully distributed over the area surrounding the protected joint.
Abstract: Solutions containing high concentrations of the n-butyric acid ester and n-octanoic acid ester of bromoxynil (3,5-dibromo-4-hydroxybenzonitrile) or ioxynil (3,5-diiodo-4-hydroxybenzonitrile). Such solutions have crystallization temperatures lower than those of like solutions containing like amounts of any one of such esters alone.
Abstract: A process and apparatus are disclosed for forming blown film of a low strain hardening polymer, such as a low pressure polymerized-low density ethylene copolymer, including an improved film bubble cooling technique which permits high production rates to be achieved with good film bubble stability. The disclosed process comprises cooling a molten film bubble by contacting the outside of the film bubble with separate annular streams of cooling fluid fed through at least two stacked annular cooling rings disposed around the film bubble, wherein all or substantially all of the cooling fluid exits the system through a common plane formed by the last cooling ring.
Abstract: Salts of fatty acids such as calcium stearate and lithium stearate are added to olefin polymer-based rotational molding compositions to provide rotational moldings with pinhole-free surfaces.
Abstract: A multi-compartment container includes a molded body and a molded cap secured thereto. The body includes a confining wall forming a space, an internal dividing wall forming separate compartments within the space, and a base. The interface between the dividing wall and an inner side surface of the body defines a fluid seal between the compartments. The dividing wall forms an opening at an upper end of the body which communicates with one of the compartments. The cap is secured to the upper end of the body to form a seal therearound. The cap includes a first port aligned with the opening in the dividing wall to form a passage therewith, and a second port communicating with the other compartment. A compressible endless seal ring is mounted in a groove in either the cap or the dividing wall to form a seal around the passage at the interface between the first port and the opening when the cap is installed onto the body portion.
Abstract: A polyacetal composition having excellent antistatic characteristics, good surface luster and moldability is disclosed. The composition embodying these properties includes a polyacetal resin and incorporated therein, a polyhydric alcohol fatty acid ester including a hydroxyl group and a polyethylene glycol.
Abstract: There is disclosed a long life light weight alkaline storage battery taking the form of a two terminal linear array of cells, the sidewalls, tops and bottom portions of which comprise a pair of molded plastic frames of substantially rectangular section which are joined together in a leak proof manner, with each pair similarly joined to either a similar pair, or to an end frame, while the tube of substantially rectangular sections so formed is compartmented by a series of nickel or nickel plated steel end plates that are entered into the joints between frame pairs during assembly, and that, except in the case of outermost cells, have folded dual porous plate type electrodes, impregnated to be of opposite polarity welded to their opposite sides in such manner that they project perpendicularly from the surface of the end plates to which they are attached and possessing tapered leading edges with the foremost edge unimpregnated to facilitate assembly, there being provision so that, in the assembled battery, withi
Abstract: A core extender and seal are provided which may be used in combination with cartridge filters. The core extender includes a body having first and second ends which are connected by longitudinal communication means through the core extender body. A radially extending shoulder extends from the body and is axially spaced from at least one end of the body, and preferably is a flange having on at least one lateral surface thereof an annular sealing ring. An external surface extends from at least one end to the radially extending shoulder. The portion of the body defined by an external surface may be inserted into the longitudinal bore of the filter cartridge in order to perform a sealing and connecting function between adjacent filters or a cartridge filter and the filter housing.
Abstract: A spray spinning collection unit includes a cylindrical collection mandrel and a cooperating press roll. The cooperating press roll has a peripheral surface disposed adjacent to a cylindrical surface of the mandrel so as to define a gap therebetween. To provide a predetermined radial density gradient in a cylindrical nonwoven product formed by the gap between the press roll and the mandrel, the gap has a varying height defined by the contour of the peripheral surface. The contour is selected to give the predetermined radial density gradient. Portions of the peripheral surface of the press roll may be either convex, concave, or both.
