  • Patent number: 4884541
Abstract: A speed regulating governor system is disclosed for a small internal combustion engine having a throttle valve the position of which affects the speed of the engine, wherein the governor system includes a mechanical proportional controller and an electromechanical integral controller. The throttle valve is mechanically linked to and controlled by a governor lever that is acted upon by opposing forces provided by a mechanical speed selector and a centrifugal flyweight apparatus which measures the engine speed. Additonally, a solenoid actuator is operably connected to the governor lever to apply a force thereto in response to a control signal generated by an electronic integral controller. The control signal is proportional to the time integral of the difference between a desired electrical speed input and the actual speed of the engine measured by an electrical signal generated by an alternator driven by the engine.

  • Patent number: 4884545
Abstract: A high-pressure, continuous-delivery piston pump, controlled as a function of engine speed and load, supplies fuel to an accumulator supplying injectors. On the intake side of the pump, there is provided a throttle for metering the amount of fuel supplied by the pump. Via operating signals, the throttle is regulated by an electronic control device in such a manner as to supply the pump and pressurize only the amount of fuel strictly required for operating the injectors and the engine, thus eliminating any energy losses caused by fuel feedback to the tank, and drastically reducing fuel consumption.

  • Patent number: 4884716
Abstract: A fuel cap has an anti-splash attachment which includes an outer splash-back baffle, an inner foam plug element and a retainer post which supports the outer baffle and inner plug element and tethers them by a releasable snap-on connection to an inner baffle-supporting stem of the fuel cap. The inner plug element when substantially dry is in a contracted state wherein it is smaller in diameter than the inside diameter of the fuel tank filler neck to which the fuel cap is applied. An annular gap is then present between the exterior side surface of the plug element and the interior surface of the filler neck, making it easy to insert and withdraw the fuel cap with the anti-splash attachment thereon into and from the filler neck.

Abstract: A scroll-type hermetic compressor is disclosed including within a hermetically sealed housing a fixed scroll member, an orbiting scroll member, a main bearing frame member, and a crankshaft. An oil sump is located in a discharge pressure chamber in the housing. The frame member and fixed scroll member define a suction pressure chamber in which the orbiting scroll member is disposed. The crankshaft includes a plate portion disposed between the orbiting scroll member and a thrust surface of the frame. Flexible annular seals are disposed within respective interfaces between the orbiting scroll member bottom surface and the plate portion top surface, and between the plate portion bottom surface and the frame thrust surface. The seals provide sealing between a radially inner, oil-filled discharge region and a radially outer suction region, and actuate to compensate for axial space in the interfaces.

  • Patent number: 4881879
Abstract: A hermetically sealed rotary compressor is disclosed wherein gas compressed within a compression chamber defined by a cylinder block is discharged through respective discharge ports in the main and outboard bearings defining the ends of the cylinder. Mufflers are provided on the outside ends of the bearings into which the compressed gas is expanded. A constricting gas passageway extending through the bearings and the cylinder block provides a path for constricted flow of gas from one muffler to the other. The constricted gas expands upon entry into the other muffler, thereby providing a cooler recombined discharge gas for use in cooling oil in the oil sump and cooling the motor stator windings.

A foraminous wire mesh conveyor loop passes through the chamber for supporting and transporting a food product in and through the chamber. A plate having an upper infra-red radiant emissive surface is disposed within the conveyor belt loop. A plurality of lower duct fingers located below the conveyor belt loop communicate with the outlet of the air recirculating fan and are configured for directing columnated jets of hot air upwardly through the lower loop portion of the conveyor belt loop such that the hot air impinges on the lower surface of the radiant plate. After heating the radiant plate the hot air passes around the edges thereof and enters a plurality of upper return duct fingers disposed above the coveyor belt loop. The upper return duct fingers area in communication with the inlet of the air recirculating fan.

  • Patent number: 4881496
Abstract: A lubrication system for the valve actuating mechanism of an internal combustion engine having a vertical drive shaft and horizontally oriented cylinder includes a rocker box housing the valve actuating mechanism with the valve actuating mechanism including a lower rocker arm and an upper rocker arm each oriented for rocking in a substantially horizontal rocking plane. A push rod cavity communicates at one end with the crankcase and at the other end with the rocker box. A cam shaft gear disposed at a lower end of a vertical cam shaft slings liquid oil from the crankcase through the push rod cavity into the rocker box. A dam is provided for retaining liquid oil in the rocker box at a level which partially submerges the lower rocker arm such that the rocking motion of the lower rocker arm splashes dammed oil to lubricate the valve actuating mechanism.

  • Patent number: 4840547
Abstract: A protective cap for the hermetic terminal of a hermetic compressor includes a cup-shaped plastic member for attaching to and covering the hermetic terminal during manufacturing, shipping, and storage of the compressor, i.e., whenever the hermetic terminal would not otherwise be connected to an external source of power. The cap contactingly engages the base portion and conducting pins of the hermetic terminal. The protective cap includes a cylindrical stud portion arranged coaxially within an outer cylindrical wall portion of the cup-shaped member. The stud portion slip fits radially inwardly of the circularly arranged conductor pins of the hermetic terminal. A tapered end facilitates guided insertion of the stud portion within the conductor pins prior to engagement of the cap with the hermetic terminal base portion.

  • Patent number: 4838769
Abstract: A compressor assembly is disclosed including a compressor mechanism mounted within a hermetically sealed housing. The compressor mechanism includes a crankcase having a suction inlet opening providing direct communication into a suction cavity within the crankcase. The compressor mechanism is located in an upper chamber of the housing and a motor is located in a lower chamber, the entire interior of the housing being at discharge pressure. Suction gas is isolated from the motor so that heat from the motor does not increase the temperature of the suction gas. The discharge tube is positioned in the lower chamber so that discharge gas flows over the motor to cool it, thereby improving efficiency.

  • Patent number: 4835849
Abstract: A pressure relief valve for a hermetically sealed reciprocating piston compressor is made in which a bore in a compressor cylinder head defines the valve body. Valve components are introduced into the bore through a valve opening on the bottom surface of the cylinder head. A discharge pressure chamber in the cylinder head also has a discharge pressure opening on the bottom surface. A path is provided between the valve opening and the discharge pressure opening, when the compressor is assembled, by means of a duct in a valve plate interposed between the cylinder head and a compressor crankcase. Also disclosed is a method for assembling the pressure relief valve in a cylinder head, whereby the valve components are temporarily retained within the bore by a washer-shaped soft metal valve seat that is compressed and expanded into an annular undercut or recess in the bore located adjacent to the bottom surface of the cylinder head.
