  • Patent number: 6725061
Abstract: A wireless communication device having an accessory port and a processor to detect when an external accessory is coupled to the accessory port, and then identify the type of external accessory. A data line connects the external accessory to the wireless communication device, the data line being a portion of a pulse code modulation (PCM) port in the accessory port. The processor senses activity on this data line, including a signal transmitted by the external accessory indicative of when the external accessory is coupled to the wireless communication device. The processor further senses identification data associated with the external accessory, with the identification data including an identification code of the external accessory. The processor generates a clock signal, and the external accessory transmits the identification data to the wireless communication device over the data line in response to the clock signal. In this fashion, the processor repeatedly senses the transmitted identification data.

  • Patent number: 6694129
Abstract: A system and method for a multi-band direct conversion wireless communication receiver is presented. The system incorporates a low noise amplifier (LNA) configured to amplify received RF signals, a local oscillator (LO) configured to output a frequency, and I and Q channel mixers. Each mixer has a first input operatively coupled to the LNA, a second input operatively coupled to the LO output, and an output. The system further includes an adjustment mechanism configured to adjust drive level of the LO depending on a level of jammers detected by the receiver. Thus, the receiver may operate in multiple wireless communication bands and modes and meet the associated specifications.

  • Patent number: 6683851
Abstract: A QMIP unit receives and stores data information from a first set of modules. The QMIP unit also receives and stores a flow control indication from each module of a first set of modules. The flow control indication is indicative as to whether each module of the first set of modules is capable of receiving data. The QMIP unit creates a frame which carries the data information and the flow control indication corresponding to one of the first set of modules. The QMIP unit forwards the frame over the common data link. At the far end of the data link, the receiving QMIP unit parses the flow control indication and the data information from the frame and forwards the flow control indication and the data information to a destination module. The destination module processes the data according to normal procedures. In addition, the destination module responds to the flow control indication by ceasing the transmission of data to the sending module if so indicated.

  • Patent number: 6665537
Abstract: A system and method for invoking the performance of mobile node registration in a wireless communication network. The system comprises a terminal device for transmitting and receiving packetized data and a communication device coupled to the terminal device. The communication device monitors the packetized data for an Internet Protocol (IP) address contained in an IP address request. If the IP address request is for a static IP address the communication device waits for network movement information. Based on the received network movement information, the communication device solicits network address information. Upon receipt of the network address information, the terminal device then initiates Mobile Node registration. As a result, the Mobile Node registration is automatically invoked whenever the terminal device changes its network point-of-attachment.

  • Patent number: 6661851
Abstract: A bi-directional vector rotator that can be used to provide outputs having phases that are rotated in clockwise and counter clockwise directions relative to that of the input signal. The bi-directional vector rotator includes a product term generator that receives a complex input and a complex carrier signal and generates product terms. Combiners then selectively combine the product terms to generate the outputs. By sharing the same product term generator for both clockwise and counter clockwise phase rotations, the bi-directional vector rotator can be implemented using less circuitry than that for a conventional design employing two uni-directional vector rotators. Moreover, only one complex carrier signal is needed by the bi-directional vector rotator instead of two for the conventional design. Further simplification in the design of the bi-directional vector rotator can be achieved by selecting the proper sampling rate for the complex input.

  • Patent number: 6650873
Abstract: A wireless communication device performance, such as standby time, is improved by adaptively allocating surplus system resources to change quick paging channel parameters at the system, such a system being for example, a base station. Adaptively adjusting the quick paging channel parameters allows available base station resources to be allocated to the quick paging channel, thereby enabling the wireless communication device to demodulate the quick paging channel more reliably. Parameters such as the number of quick paging channels, the data rate used by the paging channel, and the quick paging channel transmit power level are weighed and adjusted.

  • Patent number: 6594628
Abstract: A voice recognition system is disclosed wherein a feature extraction apparatus is located in a remote station. The feature extraction apparatus extracts features from an input speech frame and then provides the extracted features to a central processing station. In the central processing station, the features are provided to a word decoder which determines the syntax of the input speech frame.

  • Patent number: 6590886
Abstract: The present invention is an improved method and circuit for reducing the amount of time a mobile receiver spends in the active phase of a slot in a communications system utilizing a slotted paging mechanism. The invention allows the awake time to be configured for the minimum interval needed to demodulate the paging channel messages of interest. The invention includes a means to adjust the timing reference of the fingers to compensate for a sleep duration not an integral multiple of the PN sequence period, and a means to adjust the deinterleaver frame reference timing to compensate for a sleep duration not an integral multiple of the frame interval, and a means to initialize the frequency tracking, gain scaling, and DC bias loops, if any, of the analog receiver chain to minimize the time needed to re-lock these loops.

  • Patent number: 6584313
Abstract: A novel and improved method for performing paging is described. In one embodiment of the invention a searcher is used to detect spread spectrum signals. Samples received RF signals are stored in a sample buffer. During standby mode, the samples are gathered during paging slots assigned to the mobile. A set of searches are performed on the samples, and if pilot signals are detected additional demodulation is performed to detect paging messages. The resulting set of demodulation data may be combined to increase detection. After a page message has been detected, additional demodulation resources may be activated to processes more complete page messages, or other information channels. In one embodiment of the invention, the searcher includes a demodulator to perform quick page detection without the use of finger elements to reduce idle mode power consumption.

  • Patent number: 6484250
Abstract: A method and apparatus for reducing the amount of RAM required while maintaining fast data access. Data records are often saved in nonvolatile memory in order to maintain the contents of the data records even when the circuit is powered down. In the present invention each record in the nonvolatile RAM collection of data records is input to a function H(x) that outputs a tag value. The calculated tag value is saved in predetermined memory locations in RAM. Each calculated tag is shorter in length than the record saved in nonvolatile RAM. Therefore less RAM is required to save one tag value for each data record than is required to save the entire collection of data records in RAM. The value of H(y) is calculated when a data record entry corresponding to y is desired. Then the value of H(y) is compared to all the values in the tag value table. If a match is found, the corresponding record from its location in non-volatile RAM is retrieved and compared to y.
