  • Patent number: 8340177
Abstract: Techniques and tools are described for scalable video coding and decoding. For example, a 3D sub-band video encoder includes an embedded base layer codec as well as temporal sub-band transforms and spatial sub-band transforms. The placement of the base layer codec among the sub-band transforms and the role of the base layer codec in scalable video coding vary depending on implementation. In general, the base layer codec provides efficient compression at low bit rates and produces a base layer compressed video bit stream compatible with existing decoders. At the same time, the 3D sub-band video encoder provides spatial and temporal scalability options at higher bit rates, refining the base layer video. A corresponding 3D sub-band video decoder includes an embedded base layer decoder.

  • Patent number: 8337319
Abstract: A golf club comprises a shaft, a club head, and a connection assembly that allows the shaft to be easily disconnected from the club head. In particular embodiments, the connection assembly includes a removable hosel sleeve that allows a shaft to be supported a desired predetermined orientation relative to the club head. In this manner, the shaft loft and/or lie angle of the club can be adjusted without resorting to traditional bending of the shaft. In some embodiments, the club head has an adjustable sole piece that can be adjusted upwardly and downwardly relative to the sole of the club head, which is effective to adjust the face angle of the club head.

  • Patent number: 8341222
Abstract: A local or remote server is configured to receive requests for text and other suggestions from a plurality of client applications. The local or remote server can format requests for delivery to one or more suggestion sources along with client contexts that specify client delivery, format, or other requests associated with the suggestion request. The local or remote server selects suggestion sources based on the client requests and the client contexts, and can combine suggestions returned from multiple sources as directed by client contexts. Requests associated with different clients can be directed to different suggestion sources, and user or client accepted suggestion histories can be stored for use in providing suggestions.

  • Patent number: 8340510
Abstract: A video bit stream with pictures comprising inter-coded content can be decoded upon receiving a channel start or file seek instruction. Pictures for beginning decoding and display of the bit stream can be selected based at least in part on one or more tuning parameters that set a preference between a latency of beginning to display video and possible defects in the displayed video. In some embodiments, to implement decoding upon a channel start or file seek, one or more types of data are generated for one or more pictures. For example, picture order counts are generated for pictures after a channel start or file seek operation. As another example, a decoder generates a frame number value that triggers re-initialization of a reference picture buffer before decoding after a channel start or file seek operation.

  • Patent number: 8338362
Abstract: The present invention provides: (1) antiviral agents that act by reducing or inhibiting the activity of SR proteins, more specifically, (i) antiviral agents that act by enhancing dephosphorylation of SR proteins, and (ii) antiviral agents that act by inhibiting proteins that phosphorylate SR proteins; (2) antiviral agents that act by inhibiting the expression of SR proteins, and (3) antiviral agents that act by activating proteins that antagonize SR proteins. The present invention also provides compounds that inhibit SRPKs, which phosphorylate SR proteins. Such compounds inhibit the activity of SR proteins and have antiviral activities. Various new viruses including SARS have emerged, and thus the present invention provides long-lasting broad-spectrum antiviral agents applicable to new viruses.

  • Patent number: 8340381
Abstract: An image of an anatomical structure can be analyzed to determine an enclosing three-dimensional boundary when the anatomical structure is filled with two substances, such as air and a fluid. Various techniques can be used to determine the enclosing boundary including: analyzing the virtual structure to segment the structure into air and fluid pockets, determining if there are multiple fluid pockets whose surface touches a single air-fluid boundary, determining a separate threshold for respective fluid pockets, resegmenting the virtual anatomical structure using the separate threshold for different fluid pockets, forming a hierarchical pocket tree which represents the relationship between the fluid and air pockets, pruning the pocket tree based on various criteria which corresponds to deleting those pruned portions from the virtual anatomical structure, and resegmenting the remaining virtual anatomical structure using one or more of fuzzy connectedness, two-dimensional gap filling, and level set segmentation.

  • Patent number: 8335331
Abstract: A speaker virtualization system provides virtual surround sound using a pair of physical loudspeakers. A multiple surround audio channels input is processed using a combination of head related transfer functions and shaped reverberation to provide widening and front/back auditory clues without requiring any kind of interaural path cancellation. The system uses a 360 degree power-response head related transfer function to provide perceptual separation of the reverberant and direct paths, along with discrete, different reverberation for left and right rendering channels to provide envelopment. By eliminating interaural path cancellation, the speaker virtualization system also produces a wider virtual surround sound effect, without dependency on head position and facing.

  • Patent number: 8335432
Abstract: Optical networks interconnect a plurality of optical network units (ONUs) to an optical line terminal (OLT). The OLT comprises a plurality of optical transceivers that are wavelength division multiplexed and connected to a WDM metro network. The metro network is configured to facilitate communication of a plurality of wavelengths between the OLT and local nodes, the local nodes including a wavelength sharing network configured to connect at least one of the wavelengths communicated with the OLT to a plurality of feeder fibers. The feeder fibers connect the wavelength sharing network to remote nodes that comprise WDM devices that have pluralities of output ports. An optical combiner allows the first and second ONUs to share the same transceiver in the OLT.

  • Patent number: 8334095
Abstract: Disclosed herein are methods of expressing a heterologous nucleic acid sequence, such as a sequence encoding a detectable protein, in a primary neuron (or plurality of primary neurons) and other neurons that are monosynaptically connected to the primary neuron (or plurality of primary neurons). Such methods involve viruses (such as, rabies viruses) defective for transsynaptic transport (TST-defective virus) and in situ complementation of the defect in a manner that permits only monosynaptic transport of the TST-defective virus. The TST-defective virus and, therefore, any heterologous nucleic acid sequence it carries in its genome, are not transmitted to neurons that are not monosynaptically connected to the primary neuron (or plurality of primary neurons). Also disclosed are methods of targeting a TST-defective virus to a genetically defined primary neuron (or plurality of primary neurons).
