  • Patent number: 5245072
Abstract: This invention relates to processes for making biodegradable surfactant. The process comprises several steps including an optional step. The first step is directed to reacting olefins with ZSM-23 catalyst to form oligomers having the formula -(C.sub.3).sub.x, (C.sub.4).sub.x or mixtures thereof. Second, the oligomer is hydroformylated to form a saturated alcohol, for example, tridecanol. Next, the saturated alcohol is ethoxylated. Thereafter a nonionic biodegradable surfactant is recovered. This surfactant can be used in detergent formulations. A process is also taught for making esters which can be used as lubricants or plasticizers. A specific hydroformylation process is taught which utilizes modified cobalt carbonyl catalyst. Also, a specific ethoxylation process is taught. Products formed according to the latter two processes as well as their uses are also taught.

  • Patent number: 5220089
Abstract: Olefins are converted to lower alkene hydrocarbon products, e.g., propene, butenes, and isoalkenes with zeolite MCM-22 catalyst. This catalytic conversion is particularly useful in the selective separation of linear olefins in mixed hydrocarbon streams, employing MCM-22 catalyst to convert these straight-chain unsaturated components to lighter products, particularly, C.sub.3 -C.sub.4 olefins. One potential application of this selective separation is in the removal of linear olefins from FCC gasoline.

  • Patent number: 5208387
Abstract: An improved process is disclosed for the acid catalyzed production of DIPE from propene and water feedstreams that eliminates the propene recycle stream to the olefin hydration reactor and achieves high propene conversion. The accomplishment is achieved by carrying out the hydration and etherification reactions in two stages wherein the first stage comprises a zeolite catalyzed hydration and etherification of propene employing a minimum of water feed. The second stage converts unconverted propene from the first stage reactor by hydration and etherification to DIPE in contact with an acidic catalyst, preferably acidic resin, and an excess of water. Isopropanol (IPA) from both the first and second stage reactor is recovered as an aqueous azeotrope by a combination of distillation and extraction steps and the azeotrope is recycled to the first stage reactor.

  • Patent number: 5202015
Abstract: Process conditions and process configuration have been discovered for the concurrent but independent catalytic reaction of waxy distillate and light olefins feedstocks that simultaneously results in the dewaxing of distillate feedstock and the oligomerization of light olefins to produce olefinic gasoline. In the novel process, under the conditions discovered, the opposing reactions of molecular weight reduction, as exemplified by waxy n-paraffin cracking, and molecular weight growth, as exemplified by olefin oligomerization, have been found to compatibly coexist to achieve the sought after objective of producing olefinic gasoline while dewaxing distillate in a single conversion step. Partial desulfurization and denitrogenation of the distillate feed also occurs.
